Is it worth the potential hassle, or would you just go directly with another carrier even if it costs a little more?
Community Reviews
Lyca Mobile is a very low cost option for basic talk, text, and light data, with 18GB, 8GB, and unlimited plans that can work well as a second line or throwaway number. The app and online dashboard can show the account number and transfer PIN, and porting has gone smoothly for some. Data can throttle to about 3 Mbps after the high speed allotment, and taxes are reported as low. The main cautions are unreliable service in some areas, random drops, and a messy support and cancellation experience, including blocked renewals, fraud checks, and difficult port outs.
Lyca can show account number and port-out PIN inside the online portal under Manage Account, which can avoid calling support.
Lyca throttles high-speed data down to about 3 Mbps after the included data is used, and that speed can still feel usable.
Lyca can support quick port-out and online port-in workflows, including showing account credentials in the app.
Lyca can work well for a new number when used as a second line with eSIM for several months.
Lyca port-out can fail and leave the number in limbo, which can result in losing the phone number.
Lyca customer service can be slow or hard to reach, including limited hours and long waits after submitting an IMEI for compatibility.
Lyca billing and plan setup can cause unexpected charges, including auto-pay being turned off while charges still occur later.
Lyca service can become unreliable on AT&T MVNO coverage, including frequent "no internet connection" issues even in areas with strong signal.

I wouldn't recommend this company, especially if you're getting service for somebody else.

Can you switch to another carrier once the plan ends?

1) Lyca has switched to AT&T instead of T-Mobile, so the service has become significantly worse in my area.
2) It seems Lyca has blocked Privacy cards since the end of August. If you're planning to use one, you may get an error and have to switch to an alternative card to avoid being charged the full price for the renewal.

You can port out.

Then I use traveller esim of other company, it is $6 for 5 gig or $10 for 10 gig a month. I mostly use free WiFi from home or at library or business using VPN if I am nervous.
My plans are cheaper.
