You could buy and trade it to apple immediately for $120 with your existing phone to get something nicerhttps://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in
Why not just give apple the $120 cash straight up?

Whereas a laptop sitting at home is behind a locked door, isn't mobile, and has better security software than a flim-flam mobile OS. And if you NEED a mobile device for your authentication, you're better off getting one of those $40 Android deals where it literally sits at home inside a locked drawer until you need it.

Or just get a YubiKey.

Not every online service uses them -- and some services that do take them don't permit the use of two, which you REALLY do need two, in case one gets lost.

The second one gets kept in a safety deposit box, because whooo boy, once you go full Yubi, if you lose it, you're locked out forever.

It's an unlocking rule designed for all Verizon Value brand devices.
  • For devices activated on the Verizon network on or after January 20, 2026, the rule is that the device must have 365 days of active and paid service. Thereafter Verizon will unlock these devices upon request.
  • For devices activated on the Verizon network on or before January 19, 2026 the device must have 60 days of active and paid service. Thereafter these devices will be remotely unlocked automatically.

Keep in mind the iPhone 12 is also scheduled to go out of support in 2027. By the time it's unlock eligible, it's going to be unsupported by Apple moving forward.

I believe this model has a sim card, so you should be able to bypass SIM lock using R-SIM/turbo sim.

That's one stop-gap solution to the bigger problem of a bad product design. It should have easily upgradable storage via MicroSD cards. Period. Full stop.

It'll make these FIVE year old devices actually usable for many years to come, instead of borderline ewaste.

But something something "we'll lose revenue if we do that", and now we have a yearly upgrade cycle. 🤣
You can't blame apple as the main culprit and act as if they're the reason. The IT industry, consumerism and product managers across the board have pushed that problem for decades from everything from cell phones to tv's to computers to anything we own nowadays. Everything and everyone will soon be expendable yearly due to AI..knockknock

Tracphone site hates every mobile browser I have. What's the minimal cost for the final 9 months of service until unlock?

Remember, this phone was released in October 2020. It's FIVE years old. These old models were probably sitting on a shelf in a warehouse someplace, so be prepared for a partially-degraded battery.
Six years old, not five.... but the price is right.
