Walmart's Pit Crew oil change is a low cost conventional oil service that can be hard to beat on price, especially for basic vehicles. The base deal is cheap enough that it may still undercut buying oil and a filter separately, and the corporate backing can make any problem easier to escalate. The main cautions are possible shop and disposal fees, long waits that can stretch into the whole day, and the need to verify the oil level afterward. It is also conventional oil only, so many newer cars may need a higher tier service.

For NYS, I think mandates for accept used oil with no charge. But ya, sometimes always unexpected fees.

5 qt jug is $25.18. Therefore, don't expect quality labor for $3.70. Pit crew = under 20 sec job. Always check for correct oil level after the oil change. Never trust the sea monkeys at Wally World.

I was at Walmart buying a tire to carry out. A young woman was in the parking lot with her hood up and I watched a tech go out to her car and pour in oil. I found that interesting so I went out to be nosy. Turns out they never refilled her oil and let her drive off. She returned with a shaking car. They were trying to send her out the door again only to come back if she had problems. Her car was already knocking. I helped her report this to the manager and forced them to start a insurance claim. She called her dad and I explained what happened and recommended they tow the car to the dealer as Walmart was going to try and weasel their way out of not replacing her engine.

No chance I would let them breath on my car.

Walmart pays a fraction of that for generic oil in bulk.

I've gone there with my SUV for going on 6 years. Flawless every time. And if something did happen, they're a large corporation with insurance, so collecting would be far better than a little mom and pop shop.

Think I'd take a chance with my 7 year old grandson's automotive skills before I'd let them near my truck

Good luck collecting $ if the engine is over or under filled unless you spot the problem right after service. Why gamble when one can buy decent oil and do the work? Most of my friends do their own oil change because they want to protect their investments.A good Mom and Pop shop is often run by one highly competent person. Some of the best mechanics are ex rocket scientists working out of the garage. A good understanding of electro mechanical devices is a must to repair modern autos. One must be able to operate and interpret data from multi-channel scope. The big $ is in electronic troubleshooting, not replacing tires, suspension, or muffler.
I wish you the best; I'll stick with the big corporation with insurance. Every time I've stopped by a mom and pop shop, I've never had even the slightest impression anyone working there was a rocket scientist. Far from it.

Again, GOOD service is not the norm in today's environment. The best don't advertise. Plenty of referral works because people want quality work at a fair price. Do it right the first time.

Smart people avoid litigation at all cost. Time is $.

Check the cap before you book. Pit Crew is conventional oil only, and most cars from the last ten years call for synthetic right on the oil cap, so you end up in the next tier. Still beats buying a jug and a filter yourself, which was OP's point.

With prices how they've been, I've been buying my own oils and filters and plan to start changing on my own. Half the price and same (if not better) quality items used. With rhinoramps and 4 ton jack stands, my fear of being under my car have went down a lot
