This open box ROG Xbox Ally X stands out as a powerful Windows handheld for playing current PC games on the go, with strong performance and good efficiency at lower power settings. It can also run SteamOS or Bazzite, though Windows stays useful for some anti cheat heavy games. The main tradeoff is battery life, which drains fast, and the price still feels steep unless the device will get regular use. Open box pricing may drift lower over time, making it a better fit for frequent handheld gaming than occasional travel use.

  • Players who want to run SteamOS or Bazzite on a Windows handheld, because it can run those Linux-based systems well and still keep Windows for anti-cheat games.

  • Traveling gamers who want a handheld for current PC games, because it has enough power for newer titles and works well when used on the move with access to charging.

  • PC game libraries that already have lots of unplayed titles, because the handheld can make that backlog portable without needing to rebuy a whole new console library.

  • Frequent handheld users who will actually use it daily, because the hardware can justify itself when it becomes a regular part of the routine.

  • People who only use a handheld occasionally, because the price is hard to justify when it sits unused most of the time.

  • Players who want a console-like setup without Windows friction, because the device ships with Windows 11 and some games still need Windows for anti-cheat.

  • Gamers who need long unplugged sessions, because the battery can drain quickly during play.

  • Buyers expecting a big performance jump over other high-end handhelds, because the top-end performance is roughly the same and the premium may not feel worth it.

Never used mine enough to justify the price so I sold it. Cool device but think through how often you're really going to use it before buying one.

Gotta wait until the new units go on sale and then the open box stuff drops accordingly. That's how prices typically move at best buy. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw this on sale for $100 less over the next 6 months with open box down to $700-750.

Doubt we'll see it as low as the Z1e ones got though since the starting msrp for that was only $700.

With tech prices going up I doubt this will be much cheaper anytime soon. Would love to be wrong but it seems like all tech is trending upward right now.

I got a switch 2 before the price hike... and I keep thinking if I should sell it and get something like this?
It's because I (like most people) have a large collection of pc games... but truthfully I don't play most. So it would be cheaper to just re-buy a Switch 2 version of a few games, than to spend these outrageous prices on a pc handheld.
The only thing that still annoys me and make me consider it, is that consoles require additional subscriptions to play online! And with a pc handheld, I can basically play all of Nintendo's back catalogue which is likely better than most of what is to come.
What hassle gaming has become in the modern era.

Both Switch 2 and PC handhelds are great and in my opinion are complementary. I have and use both.

If it makes u feel any better, we got a Switch 2, and I think the Switch OLED is better. Smaller form factor, better screen, lighter weight, and 2x the battery time. Only reason I use the Switch 2 is to play Mario Kart World, but really Mario Kart Deluxe is as much fun.

Gross. Get a steam deck
Nope. Instead of a Steam deck, get a Retro Pocket 6, Ayn Odin 3, or any powerful other android/snapdragon handheld. Steam OS is basically an app now with DroidDeck

Why? This can run Steam OS and is significantly better in performance, for about the same money (Open box). Don't tell me the Steam deck has better ergonomics..

When switch 2 came out I thought about getting one, then I remembered all the games in my steam/epic/ea library and got a rog ally 7 z1e instead. I don't used it that much, but I don't regret getting it over switch 2, their games are just too damn expensive

The description says it runs off Windows 11, not SteamOS. Are you replacing Windows with SteamOS?

SteamOS or Bazzite runs great on these handhelds - you only need windows for some games whose anti-cheat dislikes Linux.
