Never used mine enough to justify the price so I sold it. Cool device but think through how often you're really going to use it before buying one.

Gotta wait until the new units go on sale and then the open box stuff drops accordingly. That's how prices typically move at best buy. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw this on sale for $100 less over the next 6 months with open box down to $700-750.

Doubt we'll see it as low as the Z1e ones got though since the starting msrp for that was only $700.

Why? This can run Steam OS and is significantly better in performance, for about the same money (Open box). Don't tell me the Steam deck has better ergonomics..

Community Reviews

This open box ROG Xbox Ally X stands out as a powerful Windows handheld for playing current PC games on the go, with strong performance and good efficiency at lower power settings. It can also run SteamOS or Bazzite, though Windows stays useful for some anti cheat heavy games. The main tradeoff is battery life, which drains fast, and the price still feels steep unless the device will get regular use. Open box pricing may drift lower over time, making it a better fit for frequent handheld gaming than occasional travel use.

Common Questions (5)

  • It makes the most sense if you'll use it often enough to justify the price. If your handheld use is mostly travel or couch sessions, the cost can be hard to justify compared with how much it gets used.

    lmj7373RaiTechbharkol1

  • Yes, it can run SteamOS or Bazzite well, and Windows 11 is mainly needed for some games with anti-cheat that does not like Linux. The listing's Windows 11 install does not prevent replacing it.

    SlickDealer2007doctorshusbandSlick_Drone

  • It has enough power for current games on the move, but battery life is a weak point and it can chew through charge quickly. It works best when you have access to power for longer sessions.

    bharkol1schlack

  • A 1TB microSD card can be a cheaper way to expand storage, and one setup used daily for two years with that approach. Paying the higher price for the 1TB configuration may not be the best value if you can add storage yourself.

    Obese_ICEagent

  • It may fall another $100 or so after new units go on sale, with open-box pricing potentially landing around $700-$750 over the next 6 months. It is not expected to reach the very low open-box prices seen on the older Z1e models.

I paid $260 for my Steam Deck. These Asus handhelds are all junk. Does the sd card slot melt on these ones too? lol
You bought your OLED 1tb stream deck from a retailer in 2026 for $260? I'd like to see that deal!

The description says it runs off Windows 11, not SteamOS. Are you replacing Windows with SteamOS?
No, you're right. I was thinking about the Legion Go S. Too many handheld deals going at once!

I upgraded from a Steam Deck - mainly used when I travel or on the couch. Decent hardware and has enough power to run a whole lot more games than the steam deck... Really good option if you want to play current games on the move but have access to power still... chews through battery.

Probably not the OLED, of course nor 1tb. but still.... Ill glady take LCD and only 512gb of memory for a 70% discount, lol.

Those days have gone though, I'm glad I got my Legion Go S Z1e for $418 a year ago, best purchase ever and a lot of gaming to be had for that price.

been using it every day last two years, threw a 1tb SD card in it

$260 is better than $789 imo

Honestly no not really. The top end performance is roughly the same but mid range to low tdp the z2e is great for efficiency. I was actually quite surprised how well it performs at lower tdp. With that being said, no not worth the premium (I have a Legion Go 2 and Legion Go S)

I think $780 is a fairly solid price point though for this

Never had one, how is the TV hook up for one of these? I quite like the idea of being able to travel, hook this up to the hotel or rental house TV and game with the kids, instead of lugging a Series S Xbox.

If this is similar to the rog OG z1e, then all you really need is a USBC to HDMI out to tv. It's really easy to hook to TV. I believe Asus Rog has their own power adapter to do this
