Major Verizon mnvos like ST and Total had these free with $55 first month plan and you will essentially get the same state of the device needing additional 11 months of paid service to get it unlocked. This deal is even worse with more upfront payment, no one month of service included. More so since mnvo devices can be rebranded within each other for cheaper plan options - like moving from ST to TracFone etc.
Worth mentioning that Total wireless needs dreaded ID verification and selfie so that can be ignored because of this red flag but ST one was a better deal in all sense.
Also embracing for time machine jokes, there is a possibility of getting the 2026 version of this device or anything newer or better for similar price (~$55) from ST soon ... So yes no one can time travel but still can wait for better offers rather than paying for this device.
Further, after Jan 2026, when Verizon was freed from the restriction of mandatory unlock, most of these mid range devices do not make much sense of the intention is to unlock as paying for the whole year of service is almost always more expensive than buying these unlocked outright.
YMMV
