Flowtron's outdoor zapper is built for long term use and easy upkeep, with reports of sturdy U.S. made construction, UL certification, and years of reliable operation. The updated grid design, replaceable bulb and starter, and simple cleaning with a brush or air duster add to its appeal, and the timer can be handled with a plug in timer or smart plug. The main tradeoff is that it zaps many non target insects and can be loud, while mosquito control itself is questioned by some. It is a practical pick if you want a durable electric zapper and can live with the collateral catch.

Lies. .2 % of all the dead insects are mosquitoes. Bug zappers don't attract mosquitoes. Science. Look it up.
That's what the included CO2 cartridges are for. Paired with the light, you get a wide variety of insects.

I have used them in people's homes, commercial buildings and churches during those unusual massive fly hatches. Turn room lights off. That is the best use for these. Since these are open bottom, best to have a 5 gallon bucket of water below when some are just stunned, they all drown. Or just put on a steel plate or piece of plywood. Vacuum daily.
Given El Niño and climate change, do NOT put a bucket of water underneath unless you put 1/4 mosquito bit chunks in it, otherwise the water will become a breeding ground for insect larvae. The babies may not fly high enough to be zapped, and with the mosquito bit tea, if the larvae hatch they will only survive a day. Ine has to clean out the bucket once a month and replenish with mosquito bit tea. Better yet, don't use a water bucket at all. What if the wind blows the zapper off its shelf and it lands in the water? Note octenol is a chemical pesticide, and not necessarily toxic to children or water waste management systems. Not sure about pets. If you live in a HOA check if you are allowed to use this.

Octenol replacement cartridges are $12. Can one opt not to use octenol? Woukd this seriously impact whether or not mosquitoes will be attracted and zapped?

Fair question. The numbers just don't show any meaningful impact with mosquitos. What it will do is draw lots of beneficial insects towards your home and zapping them. The rest will be drawn closer to your home. Over the years, I've learned that beneficial insects keep check the bad ones like army worms, ants and other burrowing insects closer to your home. These just don't help.

Not junk. I've had mine 9 years, works flawless. Underwriters Laboratory certified, made in USA.
I use mine in the garage and have a bucket under to catch the deads. The problem is that it kills everything, so if you're targeting mosquitos you're also killing fireflies, butterflies, dragonflies, moths, and other nocturnal insects.
Killing beneficial insects and not the insects you want targeted would classify this as junk to me since it doesn't kill insects like mosquitos.

Save your money this are useless and attract insects to you and have been know to be so for decades ago when i took Entomology. You can find tons of information from university and extension service studies finding their lack of killing intended insects while killing beneficial insects.

"According to an article by Timothy Frick and Douglas Tallamy of the University of Delaware published in Entomological News [107(2): 77-82] only 31 insects out of 13,789 trapped and counted (0.22%) in a suburban setting over the course of an entire summer were biting flies. "Biting flies" includes both female mosquitoes and biting gnats.
The largest number of insects (6,670 = 48.4%) were harmless, nonbiting aquatic insects from nearby rivers and streams. These insects, of course, are a vital part of the aquatic food chain and are valuable "fish food." Another important group unfortunately caught in the traps were predators and parasites, that is, biological control organisms such as ground beetles and parasitic wasps that help keep insect pest populations naturally low. Predators and parasites accounted for 13.5% of the insects caught (1,868).
So how good are bug zappers? This study would indicate they are worst than worthless because of the large number of harmless and beneficial insects they kill. Extrapolations calculated by the authors indicate that 4 million bug zappers (4 years worth of approximated sales in the U.S.) operating for 40 nights each summer, would destroy in excess of 71 billion nontarget insects each year. And the number of mosquitoes would still be the same as before. It is clear you should save your money!"

Octenol is not recommended for use indoors because it is specifically designed to attract biting insects—such as mosquitoes and black flies—from the outside into your living space.

bought the 1/2 acre one 11 years ago. it still works as new. of course, clean it once a year before put it away until the next year. replaced the UV tube twice when it gets dimmer. stopped using the expensive attractants. so, zaps less mosquitos but save a lot of money without the Octenol lure. Now, just ordered a 1 acre and paid a few dollars more with 40W and two tubes. it is ready for action.

Who's numbers ?? For the zapper or a gimmick? For the zapper it wouldn't matter if it was Einstein. I've eliminated hundreds of thousands, probably multi millions over the past 30+ years.
