FYI: per Grok:
Yes. The 250 Ω version is less sensitive in terms of voltage (how loud it gets for a given voltage from the source), so it typically needs more voltage swing and benefits from a headphone amp for good volume and headroom. The 48 Ω one (likely a DT 990 PRO X) is much easier to drive from phones, laptops, or basic interfaces.
I bought the closed back version of these back in June and paid the extra $30 for the X version (48 ohms) so I didn't have to buy a headphone amp. They work fine with my audio interface connected to my computer (which is also connected to my JBL 306Ps).
Thinking about moving to these from a pair of dt770 pro's. Would it be worth it? I already have a good amp+dac.
Just a personal preference for what you want to hear and how you plan on using them. Best bet is just to watch some youtube comparisons. I opted for the DT 770 Pro X (48 Ohm) back in June so I didn't need to buy a headphone amp. Use them for recording/mixing mainly, but listening to music is great too, hear things in recordings I never noticed before.

No. The DT 990 Pro is the same as the 770 Pro, only open back.
If you're coming from the DT 770 Pro, the Hifiman Edition XS is the best value open back because it changes the kind of sound you get, not just the tuning. Moving from a closed-back dynamic driver to an open-back planar gives you a much wider, spacious presentation. Open box/refurbished direct from Hifiman (free shipping, no sales tax) $169

I previously got the Sundara for a similar price refurbished, and it was pretty much new.
While it may be better to try a different maker for a different sound, the frequency responses of the two are much different. The DT-770 Pro is more focused (recording) while the DT-990 Pro is more spacious (for mixing).
