What's expensive is not the ram itself much less if it's already soldered into a working machine.

Silica didn't suddenly cost 3 times more, the issue is the production capacity and priotity.
capitalism is great isn't it!?

soldered ram is the main reason why people didnt buy this and sell the ram to data centers soldered ram basically drops the value of the laptop or macbook by 50% by default
Not really to data centers (this is not HBM) but non-replaceable RAM here is key for the low cost of this machine. Funny how this is now an end consumer benefit these days.

Replaceable RAM would taken out fro any refurbished machine and be sold on the market to any other PC or industrial setup for a high mark-up. Then this unit might be sold with mayb 8GB left for any profit for what's left, same as the lowest SSD capacity at 256GB.

take note the m.2 nvme is 2242 only (the short variant/typically harder to source) -- 32GB is soldered
Thanks for pointing that out.

A tip to everyone: 2230 SSDs can be made to work with a small adapter that extends the length to 2242. Yes, 2230 cost more per GB new, but you can find a lot more of them because they are common in portable game consoles. People strip out the older 512GB and 1TB 2230s and sell them to upgrade to 2TB, so the used market is priced reasonably.

its the sign of the times but there is hope notice stonk market wipeout. the hyperscalers like google meta amazon microsoft open ai anthropic etc are all losing money right now especially when you look at deepseek using a fraction of the hardware like 100x less and achieving the same exact results maybe not frontier model but good enough that they dont need to enshitify the ai and then give more ai slop and hallucinations for free users or cheap users.

lets be honest here deep seek already won the ai model wars and everyone else is playing catch up as they focus on hardware side optimization instead of focusing on efficiency.

oracle is about to go bankrupt as well. notice 50% drop from highs or more likely 90% will be needed.

since hyper bubble means hyper crash as well of these so called ai stonks google dropped by 12-20% in one week along with intel 30%+. its not even an opportunity since they burned through so much and they depreciated their ai chips by 15% not by 50% as reality hits they are enshitifying their services more and more no one wants meta even. the advertisers should get a clue paying 30% of your profit margins to these doing evil fang stonks now no one likes you one bit. the more you pay the more you charge the more you lose customers that want value not paying shitty inflation markups caused by the hyperscalers.

we demand lower prices else go away. and yes true slick dealers think like this not the new hedge fund sucing new users bots and bought accounts. to get back to normal the epstein pedo class and their supporters must pay and go bankrupt. there is no other choice.

currently just managing inflation by completely ignoring most of USA market and yes buying some stuff from aliexpress cheap goods that will get the job done even with the tariffs. ignoring most high end tech and just get good enough tech while using HACKS to make it work even better. like gcam on moto edge gets 80% of google pixel cameras. mid range computers instead of high range since there are NO GAMES to play anyway.

Ignore new games and play old games and emulators nothing ground breaking anyway and we are broke grinding and working anyway no time for games the elite can play the games by themselves with bots or ill play on overseas servers instead of USA servers ignoring the USA market of inflation is the best thing to do.

next cars. DO NOT buy any cars unless necessary let the wealthy buy all of them. no one cares. the usa automarket wants high end only and ignoring mid and low end so let them go bankrupt. they serve no purpose. they refuse to let BYD cars in instead all while auto makers refuse to make anything for the low and mid end. the subsidies that the gov has forced on us USA citizens. anyway hope the bankruptcy of the legacy autos happen sooner rather than later they deserve it.

same thing with housing. boomers want to tax us younger people that will also receive nothing to live in luxury when they stole 90% of the wealth of the country and plunged us into 40 trillion debt its all them as the epstein files were 90% the boomers. the enshitification of USA for the boomers.

I am guessing battery life would be crapped and it needs to be hooked up to the charger all the time
The page says at least 80% battery life, but considering this is a 2023 model, I doubt it will be true.

So data centers are using ddr4 so-dimms? Please, tell me more.
Yeah meta figured out how to use ddr4 in their data centers. There's a news article about it last week. Also Fujitsu just announced theyre 5x their tape drive storage output that is used for storing the large amount of data going digital since ai took over, theres just so much more being output daily. They also need the tape drives to store ai training data. Its specific use cases only for data centers . Its a crazy world we live in.

OK, so, no. You just didn't understand what you read. Meta is taking older SERVER MEMORY, loading them onto pcie cards, and using them for extra but slower RAM. This has absolutely zero to do with so-dimms from refurbished laptops. Not a thing. They're not plugging laptop so-dimms into servers. They're not plugging desktop dimms into servers. They're using ecc server memory from their old servers and probably others' servers to get the job done. You're seeing a guy picking all the apples from his orchard down the street and thinking that he's buying up all the oranges from the grocery store and that's why the orange prices are so high.

I suspect the global security states aren't helping the situation by creating artificial demand that largely ignores pricing.
