Way to go Autumn. Sounds like you've made a change to the way you eat and live, instead of just going on a diet for a while. That means you have a much better chance of NOT putting the weight back on.

Proud of you! hug

I'm not kidding, it was delicious. No one could tell it was low fat. Fat Free whipped cream, low fat cream cheese, a little bit of peanut butter (I used this [amazon.com] which is an AMAZING product and way lower in fat that regular peanut butter), low fat chocolate crust, etc. I mean it wasn't fat free and if I ate the entire thing I wouldn't lose weight, lol but a piece after dinner was totally fine. You should try it, it was really easy to make and it tasted like any regular peanut butter pie.

Thanks! hug I just started out thinking "What could I do and enjoy for the rest of my life" and I figured this is exactly what I could do an enjoy for the rest of my life. I don't even really feel like I'm giving up much. I'm not even very hungry either.

Though I have to say, I bought Turkey bacon but I just couldn't bring myself to cross over to that side just yet laugh out loud

I've always thought it tasted more like jerky, probably because of the liquid smoke flavoring. I don't mind it, but it's no substitute for the real thing.

I've had a really hard time with eating enough protein. I've been eating maybe 30g a day when I should be eating like 75+

What foods are high in protein, but are healthier?

I hope your grandma has a quick recovery with few lasting effects hug

And yeah, being a grown up sucks big time sometimes. This past week or so I've realized that curling up in a fetal position doesn't equate not being a grown up. Damn it, lol.

Thank you hug
It's good to heard that it's happened to other's too. We're all a little more relieved today than yesterday.

This question is very hard to answer if you don't include the other nutrient macros you're trying to hit. Most high-protein foods are also going to be high(er) in fat content. If you're on a low-carb diet that's fine, but if you're trying to do low-fat then any suggestions I would make for high-protein foods will be useless to you.

Also, I'd need to know about any food allergies or general preferences - many dairy products have good protein numbers but they're not helpful to you if you're lactose-intolerant. Almonds pack a pretty good protein punch (but are also high in fat) but again, allergies could preclude them for you.

My advice is to sign up for MyFitnessPal [myfitnesspal.com], set up your macros (you can adjust the defaults in the advanced settings - for instance I track carbs along with fat, protein and calories) and enter your meals.

Worst case? Get a jug of whey protein powder and drink some shakes. Mix it with almond or coconut or soy milk if you don't want to drink regular milk. Easy way to add protein to your diet without a lot of extra calories (notice I did NOT say "ZERO extra calories"). The only problem there is that protein powder can be expensive.

And this is when I realize

I've not been doing anything except ~1,300 calorie diet. I'm really not even sure how I should be going about that the right way.

I think what he's meaning is many high protein foods tend to be higher in fat (cheese, nuts, seeds, etc). There are lots of options though. Chicken Breast, black beans, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese, some cereals are fairly high in protein just watch out for the sugar.

Also I have this [amazon.com]for breakfast many mornings. One scoop is 30 calories/1 gram of fat/2 grams protein/less than 1 gram sugar. Plus the calories of the milk/almond milk you add to it. I know it's only 2 grams of protein but then add that to some egg whites (egg white omelet or scrambled eggs with peppers or something) and you've got a pretty decent breakfast and a good protein start to your day.

But like the monkey said it all depends if you're trying to stay away from dairy or something.

I'll definitely check into it
I'm not specifically staying away from anything (carbs, sugar, dairy)
and I have no allergies

I've just been doing common sense stuff like cut out sodas, no junk food and very little to no fried foods. Other than that I'm a complete idiot. HALP. laugh out loud

You're not a complete idiot! All those things you've done are great!

Do you like/have time to cook or are you more of a grab and go kind of person?

It's a toss up. I normally have time to cook lunch but not dinner. Dinner is normally an on the run thing or I wait til 11pm and there's no leftovers in the fridge so I eat a bowl of fruit or carrots w/ peanut butter.

NI, here is my experience & opinion regarding weight loss. I'll remind you up front that unsolicited advice is worth exactly what you paid for it. But this is what I have found through many years of trying, with little to no success, before finally making some progress (~45lbs. lost, roughly halfway to my goal weight, all of this since Christmas).

Different diets are going to work differently for different people. Low-carb (VERY low-carb, actually) happens to really work for me. It's taken me a long time to figure that out. I was adamantly against low-carb diets because I love bread, pizza, donuts, chips... you name it, if it has carbs in it I probably love eating it. I bought into all of the misinformation about damaging your kidneys and the other health concerns that always seem to come up when I tell people I lost the weight doing low-carb.

I have not found calorie-restrictive diets to be particularly effective for me. 1300 calories/day is VERY restrictive, by the way. Personally I tend to build a cheat day into the week when I restrict my intake, then proceed to undo all the good work I've done the other 6 days by overeating ridiculously on the cheat day. Eventually the cheat day becomes a cheat weekend, and before I know it I'm right back at my old bad habits.

I'm saying all of this because I quite firmly believe that everyone reacts differently to different diets. I've recently started intermittent fasting as part of my very-low-carb routine and it's working out pretty well for me, too. I did this because I hit a plateau with my weight loss. Lots of people will tell you that you have to eat 5-8 times per day to keep your metabolism burning. I'm here to tell you that fasting 16-20 hours/day and eating all of your calories within a 4-6 hour window is a perfectly valid way to lose weight. IF you can handle it mentally.

I can't stand being hungry. It just so happens that low-carb means I eat lots of protein and fat, and as a result I'm (a) satisfied by less food; and (b) feeling full longer since fat & protein happen to have that effect on me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend VLC + IF (that's Very Low Carb + Intermittent Fasting) to anybody else - but it's working for me.

I've also started lifting again recently. But if you think you are going to drop lots of weight strictly with exercise you are crazy. I tried that for years and years as well. You can't outrun what you shove in your face. Fix your diet, THEN add exercise. That doesn't mean stop exercising now! Just don't think you're going to go crazy at the gym, then use that as an excuse to swallow tons of pizza and ice cream. It won't work... yet. (I say "yet" because on days when I lift heavy, I allow myself some indulgences such as pizza or chips & queso and I'm still losing weight - but I had to drop 40lbs before I could start doing that!)

The very bottom line is that what works for me, or Autumn, or anybody else MIGHT work for you but only if you're willing & able to stick with it. Personally, while I love to cook, I almost never make time for it, so Autumn's recipes - while delicious-looking - won't do me much good because I won't build time into my schedule to cook them. Then again, low-carb means I'm eating lots of cheese, nuts, meat, broccoli, and other things that are pretty easy to cook or can be consumed as-is with little work.

The "sticking with it" part is important. I can do anything for a while... but eventually, if it doesn't involve a full-scale change to my life, I'll go right back to what I was doing before. That's why I congratulated Autumn & am so proud of her: it looks like she's made changes that are sustainable in her daily life, not just temporary while she pursues some goal.

Let me ask you this: what happens if you lose 20lbs? Do you raise your daily calorie allowance to 1500? Can you keep counting calories for the rest of your life? Because if you can't... sooner or later this is probably going to fail. I hate to tell you that but it's been the one truth throughout my struggle to lose weight & improve my fitness. Eating low-carb is something I CAN do forever, because I like the foods I can eat & I allow a cheat meal once a week - wherein I choose my very favorite foods that are high in carbohydrates, and indulge. It's been working for several months and I am positive I can keep it up. I can NOT stick to a diet that requires me to stop eating when I hit a certain number. That's just me though.

My point (heh) after all of this is just this: find what works for you, and do that. Don't get discouraged if what you're trying now doesn't work. Go out and learn about different diets and exercise routines and try them out for a while. Eventually something will feel right and you'll realize that you can do it and it won't upset your life very much. When that happens - you've found your life-changer, and you'll get smaller without even really realizing it.

There are tons of tools available. MyFitnessPal is one. LiveStrong has a great workout tracker + meal tracker/calorie counter. If you want a Fitocracy invite PM me - AM & I have been having a great time with that website (heads up AM: I'm about to go record my weekend lifts + what I did today, including another personal record on my deadlift! Flex) laugh out loud Get a FitBit or a FuelBand or just a plain old pedometer. Find a buddy who'll motivate you to get to the gym. Go through your pantry & fridge and sort out what you want to keep and throw out what you don't. Make a strict grocery list and stick to it. I had some success limiting myself to a budget because it kept me from buying garbage that I was hungry for but didn't really belong in my meal plan. There are tons of other tips.

Reddit has so many fitness subreddits it's almost absurd. Try r/loseit or r/fitness or if you're interested in low-carb, r/keto. I can point you toward others. Hell even 4chan has a pretty good fitness board (/fit/) although the advice you'll get there will largely be "SQUATZ AND OATZ" (which actually does work).

I like r/getmotivated too, it keeps me from being lazy and I've found plenty of stuff to make into posters there. Keep posting here, I'll kick you in the ass! laugh out loud Tell us your frustrations & challenges. We've all been there.

hug Hang in there, keep up the good work!

Excellent advice VQ hug THANK YOU for taking the time out to type all of that.

I completely get what you're saying with the calorie counting and I really did it as a way to see how bad I was eating. I can tell you it's helped a LOT and I'm not so strict on it anymore but I do still keep in mind every piece of food I put in my mouth. It was a lot of "oh I also added honey mustard to that sandwich, holy poop that's 100 calories!!!" before I realized what needed to be cut and what could stay.

What really hit me hard was I ate a Zaxby's Kickin Chicken Sandwich meal one night and I looked online to track it and it was 1200 calories for ONE meal! I cried and put on my sweat pants and headed to the gym for the first time ever.

As of right now I'm down 17lbs from Christmas and going to the gym 3 times a week. I'm also taking part in the r/loseit 12 week challenge. r/loseit and r/C25K have been phenomenal to me, but I still always feel so lost.
