Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple Wi Fi home phone replacement that works well for keeping a traditional landline number alive. The service is praised for clear calls, reliable uptime, and compatibility with existing cordless handset systems, with mobile app voicemail access and message notifications adding convenience. Long term use is a recurring strength, with several setups still running after many years and some reporting major savings versus a regular carrier. The main tradeoffs are that it depends on internet service, has no battery or SMS, and still carries taxes and fees that can add up. A practical pick for households that want a familiar phone line without the old carrier bill.

Common Questions (5)

  • Basic service is typically about $7 to $9 per month after taxes and fees, with some users citing roughly $6 to $9 depending on ZIP code. Premier service is reported at $9.99 plus taxes and fees, which can total around $19 per month.

  • It has a strong long-term track record in these comments, with reports of units working for 10 to 18 years and service staying reliable with rare outages. One caveat is that an individual unit can eventually fail after many years.

  • Yes. Calls can go to Ooma voicemail, and messages can be checked on the device or through the Ooma phone app on a mobile device. Message notifications can still appear on the phone even if the hub's message light stops working.

  • Yes. It can replace a traditional landline while still feeding an existing multi-handset cordless base, including Panasonic systems. It is a practical fit if you want to keep your home phones but move the service to internet-based calling.

  • It relies on Wi‑Fi and does not have a battery to charge. That means it works as long as your internet and power are up, but it is not a battery-backed phone for outages.

Still rocking my original Hub and Scout with no monthly charges.
I have the scout but never used it. The original hub's message light went out, but I get msg notifications on my cell phone and can listen to the msg on the device or ooma's phone app. Service rarely goes down and connection is crystal clear. Pretty good deal for a one time $143 incl tax from frys Jul 2010.

Do you get a new phone # with the service or do you have to port one over?

How much is caller ID?
Its all bundled under the premier service as one charge so its $9.99 plus taxes and fees so the total monthly charge is $19 with change.

Yes, I signed up in the late 1990's, when OOMA started. I paid about $400 I believe and moved two numbers from AT&T. I have paid nothing
since then and they still both work. I have an old one, which uses ethernet connection. So, 30 years of service for $400.

Ooma is a good choice if you want a decent, dependable replacement for a old school landline. If you only need a cell or a google voice account then you have no need for this. But Ooma is a good choice for people who want something simple and want a traditional landline phone replacement.

Thanks. Looking for a potential land line replacement that will continue to work with our existing 6 handset Panasonic cordless phone system. We have cell phones, but want to maintain our landline. Currently using FIOS for landline and TV and Internet, but might change it to just Internet.
I am also in the same boat - we have an old landline (currently using Spectrum VoIP service) that we are looking to "port out" to appropriate service - i.e. either Ooma or inexpensive MVNO service OR Google Voice. We rarely make outgoing calls and it is mainly for incoming calls from companies we had shared the number with BEFORE cell phones were a thing - the landline number has been replaced with our cell phone numbers at most companies but seems like there's always one or two companies (or old friends) that still seem to have our landline number.

Anyway, for that reason we are looking to keep the number that's been in the family for over 30 years and looking for best and most inexpensive option for the occasional incoming call.

Curious how Google Voice could be used in this scenario? We have a Panasonic multi-unit "landline" phone system that is currently connected to the Spectrum VoIP gateway/modem. This Panasonic unit also has a feature to connect via bluetooth to a cell phone.

Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? Edit: On bit further research, looks like to port the landline number to Google Voice, we might have to temporarily port over from Spectrum to an intermediary cell phone/MVNO before finally porting over from the cell phone to Google Voice? Still trying to sort the steps out.

Thanks in advance for any input,
-Topper

Mine died after like 10 years. After that I just abandoned the system, I wasn't buying a new "POTS" just to continually get spam calls.

$40 to transfer your number into Ooma, but it's free to port out.

They charge $7.xx for basic service.

I never got in on the original "white" ooma box. Was always kicking myself for it especially back in the days when it mattered a lot more and minutes came at a premium on cell service. I did set up obihai. And even though their portal is going, I am still able to use it by having a local config and a google number.

Yep. Portal is gone but it still works if you know how to set it up.
