Community Reviews
Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple replacement for a traditional home landline, with reliable Wi Fi calling and a cordless handset for households that still want a fixed phone. The service is described as working well for long stretches, including with Verizon FiOS and older handset systems, and it can be useful for voice quality, voicemail, and mobile app access. The main tradeoff is that it depends on Wi Fi, has no battery backup, and does not include SMS. Monthly cost is usually around $6 to $9 with taxes and fees, so it fits best when you want a straightforward landline style setup.
The service can work over Wi‑Fi without needing a battery for charging.
The device can support outgoing calls from a cabin when Wi‑Fi is available.
The setup can be used through a mobile device, which may help when you are away from home.
Long-term use has been reported as reliable with Verizon FiOS and an older AT&T handset system.
The device can randomly fail to connect, which can interrupt call service.
The service does not include SMS support, which limits messaging options.
Taxes and fees can add about $6-$9 per month on top of the $0 service charge.
Some setups can route calls to Ooma voicemail without ringing when the phone line does not work.

Edit: Forgot to mention, although not relevant for this deal, AmEx has for some cardholders one of their offers for Spend $70, get $50 statement credit when purchased through the Ooma site directly.

That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.
I am! I went from grandfathered Ooma hub to a grandfathered tello. going on close to 17 years with ooma thus far.

I have a few hubs still operational around the world, and I have a telo grandfathered under lifetime premiere with no charges and fees. I'm an ooma customer for life lol.
The amex offer is good, I'm thinking about picking up some hd3 handsets or another bundle from ooma to have a spare for myself or friends / family.
