That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.

Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home phone replacement that works well as a backup landline, especially for households that want multiple handsets and clearer voice quality than a cell phone for important calls. It can run for years with low monthly fees, and the app, voicemail notifications, and caller ID add convenience. The main tradeoffs are that it depends on Wi Fi, has no battery backup, and taxes and 911 fees still apply. Some long term setups have been rock solid, while others have had connection or reliability issues.
The service can work reliably for long periods with Verizon FiOS and an older AT&T handset system.
The Ooma Telo Air 2 can provide clearer voice quality than cell phones for important calls.
The system can function as a practical in-house backup line with multiple handsets across the home.
The hardware and service can support voicemail notifications via the Ooma app even when the hub message light stops working.
Ooma fees can rise over time, which can lead some users to switch away from the service.
The service depends on Wi-Fi availability and can lack SMS support.
The device can randomly fail to connect, which can interrupt service.
Call pickup may feel unreliable when many incoming calls are marketing calls that do not get answered promptly.

since then and they still both work. I have an old one, which uses ethernet connection. So, 30 years of service for $400.
Anyway, for that reason we are looking to keep the number that's been in the family for over 30 years and looking for best and most inexpensive option for the occasional incoming call.
Curious how Google Voice could be used in this scenario? We have a Panasonic multi-unit "landline" phone system that is currently connected to the Spectrum VoIP gateway/modem. This Panasonic unit also has a feature to connect via bluetooth to a cell phone.
Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? Edit: On bit further research, looks like to port the landline number to Google Voice, we might have to temporarily port over from Spectrum to an intermediary cell phone/MVNO before finally porting over from the cell phone to Google Voice? Still trying to sort the steps out.
Thanks in advance for any input,
