That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.

Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home landline replacement that works well as a backup house phone, especially for households that want multiple handsets, intercom calling, and a reliable way to reach family when cell phones are charging or misplaced. It is also valued for clear voice quality, mobile app voicemail access, and long stretches of dependable service, with several long term setups still running after many years. The main tradeoff is that it depends on Wi Fi and can have connection issues, and the monthly taxes and fees still add up. It fits best when you want a traditional phone line feel without a traditional phone bill.
The Ooma Telo Air 2 can deliver clear home phone calls while supporting multiple handsets around the house.
Long-term use reports indicate the Ooma hardware can last many years and still provide reliable home telephone service.
The service can work as a practical backup landline when cell phones are unavailable for kids or family members.
The Wi‑Fi Telo Air 2 reportedly works flawlessly after replacing a prior Wi‑Fi Telo 1 that needed frequent power-cycling.
The Ooma Telo Air 2 setup can require ongoing monthly fees and taxes/fees beyond a simple $0 service charge claim.
The Ooma system can eventually stop working after many years, and replacing it may be undesirable for some users.
The service relies on Wi‑Fi availability and can lack features like SMS support.
The device can randomly fail to connect, which can interrupt call service.

since then and they still both work. I have an old one, which uses ethernet connection. So, 30 years of service for $400.
Anyway, for that reason we are looking to keep the number that's been in the family for over 30 years and looking for best and most inexpensive option for the occasional incoming call.
Curious how Google Voice could be used in this scenario? We have a Panasonic multi-unit "landline" phone system that is currently connected to the Spectrum VoIP gateway/modem. This Panasonic unit also has a feature to connect via bluetooth to a cell phone.
Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? Edit: On bit further research, looks like to port the landline number to Google Voice, we might have to temporarily port over from Spectrum to an intermediary cell phone/MVNO before finally porting over from the cell phone to Google Voice? Still trying to sort the steps out.
Thanks in advance for any input,
