Mint Mobile's $15 monthly promo is a low-cost way to get T Mobile network service, including the unlimited plan, with free shipping on physical SIMs and hotspot support. The comments highlight solid reception for many, including in crowded venues and on 5G Standalone for iPhone, with some saying it feels faster or more reliable than expected. The main tradeoffs are the upfront payment, higher renewal pricing after the first term, de prioritization or throttling in busy areas, and limits like 20GB hotspot, SD video, and no smartwatch or unlimited hotspot option. It looks like a strong budget carrier if those constraints fit your usage.
Mint Mobile can deliver strong signal strength and fewer call drops in some metro areas.
Mint Mobile can avoid noticeable throttling in crowded venues for some long-term users.
Mint Mobile can include hotspot support with up to 20GB and SD video streaming for unlimited plans.
Mint Mobile can provide 5G Standalone access for iPhone users, which may improve coverage versus other T-Mobile MVNOs.
Mint Mobile promo pricing can end after the initial term, and renewal pricing can be higher.
Mint Mobile can throttle or reduce speeds after heavy usage over 50GB in busy locations for the rest of the cycle.
Mint Mobile can limit smartwatch support and can lack an unlimited hotspot option for some users.
Mint Mobile can have billing and renewal issues, including being charged for two plans concurrently.

But better reception for some reason (was with T-Mobile before so maybe it's just the new phones) and so far, great service. I'm happy.
I've been on MVNO for the last 5 years. I don't know that I've ever run into the problem of being throttled, but it's hard to tell. Mostly the speed issues I've run into are reception issues - like certain buildings always being a problem. The prices are such that even accounting for perks, the core service costs twice as much on T-Mobile as it does on MVNO. I don't travel much, so I don't know if it's any different in other places than Chicago.
Whenever I go to Costco, I get no service whatsoever unless I turn off Nord VPN & it's security features.
Whether reception is better with one than the other in any given building is impossible to know without testing.
But T-Mobile's network has the technical advantage of "owning" more of the airwaves at the lower-frequency bands that travel further and are better at penetrating buildings.
Being on Verizon's network often means slow speeds in dense buildings since their slice of the low-frequency spectrum gets crowded more quickly (think 4-lane highway versus 10-lane highway). This is especially true for de-prioritized service (where you are in the slow lanes of the 4-lane highway), though Visible+ and Visible+ Pro are not de-prioritized. (IE they have the same high-priority as Verizon postpaid, Spectrum Mobile etc.)
While Mint is de-prioritized, in many situations you may actually be better off in the slow lanes of their 10-lane highway than in the fast lanes of Verizon's 4-lane highway.
You might consider looking for a T-Mobile MVNO that does a free trial to see if it's an improvement.
Also, if you're an iphone user, Mint has access to 5G Standalone (SA). This makes their coverage better than other t-mobile MVNO (metro also has it, google fi is higher priority but doesn't). On Android it doesnt matter as much.
Your data speed on an MVNO has a number of variables even besides number of users. You device, bands supported, etc, it makes more sense to try a service and see if it is indeed sufficient for you needs.
My personal experience in LA is that Mint works pretty much everywhere. Even dodger stadium. The exception once was Sofi stadium where data didn't exist, but this was years ago, so I don't know if I even had access to 5G SA or all the recent bands necessary with my unlocked n20 ultra.
If you need higher priority data, the cheapest next option is t-mobile unlimited prepaid promo 2 for 75. With target redcard prepaid cards, it comes out to around $70-71 with e911 fee. I've been on Google fi for the last 15 months and I'll have to see how bad MVNO on t-mobile is. Metro has 3 months for $15 a month and I'm going to test it out, if it works switch to this plan.
In hindsight probably should've stayed with Mint and maybe will come back.
Mint has vastly better signal strength in my metro area. I'm getting 2 bars with Visible everywhere and already experienced no signal in school's indoor. Despite 2 bars the internet is always quite snappy and no call glitches so far.
Mint had 4 bars at all times but calls were glitchy at times and I had signal drops quite often. Internet was so-so speed-wise (I was on their 6Gb plan)

The timing seems like I can't wait for BF deals unless they come out with them early.
***UPDATE*** I tried every possible protocol using Windscribe, and it does not count against my hotspot allotment. So this is a problem with Proton VPN. Maybe a combination of Proton VPN + my phone? If you use Proton VPN on Mint, watch for this issue.
Can someone explain the data and the hotspot? People have mentioned it being 480P or SD. Is that a big deal? So T Mobile and Verizon has what type of data when it comes to that? Full HD? So when you choose Mint or US Mobile or Tello, you going to get 480P or SD as oppose to HD from T Mobile or Verizon?
Whenever I go to Costco, I get no service whatsoever unless I turn off Nord VPN & it's security features.
