I wouldn't recommend this version for regular hard-court tennis.
The shoe is specifically designed for clay courts.
The main difference is the outsole:
Clay version: Herringbone tread designed to grip clay and release loose dirt.
Hard-court version: More durable rubber outsole designed to withstand the abrasive hard-court surface.
You can wear the clay version on a hard court occasionally, but it isn't the best choice for frequent play.
What's the real difference between this and the hard court version? Can this work on hard courts?
If you play an athletic tennis style -- tons of stop-start, turns, direction changes on hardcourt, service & volley -- you'll burn through the soles of these shoes in little to no time, especially at toe and/or heel corners. Also, shock absorption is less for these clay shoes.
As a young, highly athletic all-court player, I liked a certain model Head clay court shoes for their comfort. My big toe would practically come through the shoe toe/bottom after 6-8 weeks. I would shoe-goo them for a while, but the shoe would also begin to break down relatively quickly.
I never had traction problem with them on hard court, mainly because I knew I didn't want to foolishly injure myself on a slick court anyway.
