yep im going to do it people, 12 hour drive leaving at 7:30pm and arriving thursday morning. i did it once before but in the day, only stopped 2 times to drain the lizard. i know i have the willpower to drive through the nite without falling asleep at the wheel. god i love vacations. this will be 2 of 3 this year.

has anyone here topped a 12 hour drive in 1 shot????

16 hours from boston, ma to myrtle beach, sc. With 9 people crammed in an 8 person suv with no a/c in the middle of the summer. It was terrible.

A couple of years ago when I found out my Mom was dying I left at about 6:00pm after being up all day and drove 16+ hours through the night and arrived there about 9:00am (gained an hour with the time change). I only stopped for gas and that was one tough ride--wanting to drive crazy fast to get there but knowing I had to keep within reason or I might not make it at all--wondering all the while if Mom was still going to be alive when I got there.

In the end I made it there in time but that was a long 16 hours.

i drive eastern nc -> boston area alone (~700 miles each way...2 roundtrips/yr). takes about 12 hrs if i do it at night...more during day depending on where i am when i hit the rush hours. i only stop for gas/potty and combine one of those stops with a trip through a drive through for food. i've been doing it for the last 8 years

Not in "one shot" (but part of the CO to MN trip) friends and I did a 6,000 mile road-trip back in 2004. It was pretty awesome, though Montana during a storm was a bit freaky (mountains and all).

I'd love to take a shot at long-distance, non-stop driving for fun, but alas there's nowhere I need to go and it'd be really impractical to rack up miles on my car and blow cash on gas just for giggles.

Most of these sound reasonable do-able. The only one I doubt a little is an account of 32 hours of driving, if that was done straight. On the other hand, enough Red Bull and loud music can work wonders.

36 hours from San Diego to Baton Rouge. 2 drivers and a cat. The cat actually handled things rather well. I was surprise.

I'm thinking about doing this in August. Just take off and drive with no particular destination in mind. I would be focusing more on enjoyment rather than distance though. Staying off of the freeways and interstates as much as possible and stick to the back roads and small towns. I can spare up to about 10 days to do this and have been giving it some thought.

That sounds really fun. Get a few roadmaps, hit up backroads, maybe come back with a story or two to tell.

Either that, or wind up the captive of an insane elderly couple somewhere in Ohio.
