Passport fees are going up July 13

Get that expiring passport renewed quickly: Charges for U.S. passports and visas for foreigners will rise July 13, the U.S. Department of State says.

That means the cost of a passport for an adult will go from $100 to $135, including a $25 administrative fee. Those under 16 will pay $105 with the fee, up from $85 now.

Passport cards, which can be used by Americans traveling by land or sea on trips to the non-U.S. parts of the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico will cost more, too. The new scale is $55 for an adult, up from $45; $40 for a minor, up from $35.

A complete list of the new fees can be viewed here [state.gov].

A State Department news release says the higher fees stem from a study of how much it costs the Bureau of Consular Affairs to provide services and that the new fee scale will "cover actual operating expenses for the 301 overseas consular posts, 23 domestic passport agencies and other centers that provide these consular services to U.S. and foreign citizens."

Frequent travelers will also be hit by a new charge of $82 to add more pages to an existing passport for visas and stamps by immigration officers.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CPB) has issued a "know before you go" advisory for those traveling to Canada and back this week. It's a big travel time for the two countries, with Canada Day on Thursday and Fourth of July Sunday. U.S. citizens under 16 need only a birth certificate when traveling by land or sea; adults, a passport, a passport card, enhanced driver's license or membership in a "trusted traveler" program. For more info, see the CPB website.

What if you lose or forget the required documents and try to get back into the USA? (That's always been a fear of mine.) You won't be turned away if your citizenship or legal residency can be established, says CPB spokeswoman Joanne Ferreira. You usually just wait longer while your identity is checked.

Before you go to the courthouse or post office, you can fill out all forms and all instructions here:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/..._1738.html

Just did this in FL. Post office here requires appointment, whereas courthouse does not. Check the rules for your state before you just show up on Monday

Adult Passport Fee goes up by $35
Kid Passport Fee goes up by $20

I am told Monday at USPS is going to be a madhouse as many people who were procrastinating will be there.

Fees are going up because the old fees were insufficient to cover the cost of processing passport applications.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/03...index.html

Passport apps must be postmarked before July 13, not received.

It should also be noted that fees for passport books also cover the costs of certain emergency services provided to American citizens overseas. These include assistance to Americans who have been victims of crime or who have been arrested abroad, assistance provided after the death of a U.S. citizen, and visits to U.S. citizens in overseas prisons. These services also include organizing the evacuation of American citizens affected by war or natural disaster in a foreign country, such as victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The estimated cost of providing such services to U.S. citizens in Fiscal Year 2009 was almost 300 million dollars. http://moscow.usembassy.gov/fees.html

Kind of hard to do if you want to go elsewhere besides Canada and Mexico. (Of course if you're a good swimmer that might be an option.)

You can renew it at any time [usembassy.gov] before or after expiration.

Oh, and if you have a reasonable printer, you can take your own [state.gov] pics.
IMO just pay the 25 cents at CVS/Walgreens/etc kiosk by taking in your memory card. You can take your own picture, edit it in photoshop and put 6 passport photos in 1 picture. Link here

Thank you!! Gotta get one for a cruise this fall.. Will definitely do it before Monday now.
remember to get the passport card also, it's good for travel within USA, to Canada, Caribbean..., but not for overseas travel. I think passport card comes in handy for cruise. Just $20 more, the fee will raise to $30 also (on top of that, it's $25 acceptance fee.)

They charge u acceptance fee only when u first-time apply for this passport card. And since this passport card is pretty new thing, I believe most of the people asking for one is first-time applicant.

Quoted from travel.state.gov,
"If you are a previous passport book holder and you are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card as a renewal by mail - even if it is your first passport card!"

Wow, millions of people will renew their passport or get a passport even if they didn't need to. The US government will reap billions!

Thanks for the heads up on this one! We just renewed our passports with extra pages two months ago but my daughter has been procrastinating about renewal. I'll get her to renew tomorrow. By the way, you were able to add more pages at no cost in any US Embassy. We added pages to our old passports two years ago in Bratislava, Slovakia and once before that in Capetown, South Africa. Filled out a short form and returned in an hour for our passports. That was far easier than sending them away in the US. I guess the embassy will be charging that new fee too. Thanks for the change, Barack.

Repped... great post.

call you cruise line, you don't need a passport for a cruise, only if you flying internationally.
Pre-cruise checklist
Reading and complying with the following instructions will ensure a smooth and timely boarding process. Also, see our Frequently Asked Questions for answers to the most commonly asked pre-cruise questions.

Please complete the pre-registration form on the Royal Caribbean International Web site.
Plan to arrive at the pier 2-4 hours prior to your scheduled cruise departure time. If you are making your own flight arrangements, make sure that you allow adequate time to travel from the airport to the pier. We recommend arriving in the cruise departure city at least 8 hours prior to departure.
All passengers must provide proof of citizenship when boarding the ship, even if your cruise includes only domestic destinations. If your cruise is an international sailing, the countries you visit will also require proof of citizenship. We strongly recommend bringing a valid passport for your trip. Non US citizens must present a valid passport and any visas or travel documents required for re-entry into the US. Contact your consulate for specific requirements. It is your responsibility to check on all required documents as these are subject to change and differ for various itineraries. To learn about visa requirements, or to purchase a passport or visa, visit the CIBT Web site.
The names shown above in the Traveler Summary must match exactly the names on the document(s) used for proof of citizenship. If they do not, you will be denied boarding. If you need to change the names of this reservation, please call 1-888-249-3978
If you are traveling with a child younger than 21 and both parents are not traveling, the cruise line requires you to provide a notarized letter from their children permission to travel. Additionally, many countries have their own requirements for children traveling without parents. Generally, a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) must be provided. In some circumstances, legal documents will be required to clarify custody rights. Documentation requirements vary by depending on the country you are visiting. Country-specific information is available by reviewing the Consular Information Sheets on the U.S. Departments of State Web site. It is also available from the consulate of the country to which you are providing. Please see our section on traveling with children for additional information.
This cruise line requires that passengers less than 21 years old be accompanied by a relative or guardian 21 years or older in the same cabin. You'll need to show proof of age when boarding the ship. Some exceptions are made for married couples and domestic partners and for families split between multiple cabins. See this cruise line's general conditions, rules and regulations for details.
If you have any special dietary needs such as low-sodium or diabetic meals, please contact us so that we can make arrangements with the cruise line.
Please contact us if you have any special medical or physical requirements, or if you will be bringing any medical apparatus on board.
Because of the limited medical facilities on board, women who are 24 weeks as of Cruise start date weeks or more into their pregnancy as of the cruise start date will not be allowed to sail. Pregnant passengers are required to provide a doctor's note at time of boarding stating their due date and that they are fit to travel.
If you did not pay the full amount at time of booking, you must pay the balance due by the specified due date. If you do not, your reservation will be cancelled by the cruise line and you may not be eligible for a refund. Please call us at 1-888-249-3978 to make your final payment; your credit card will not be automatically charged. Please note that travel documents will not be released until any outstanding balance has been paid in full.
Finally, have a great trip! And if you have questions about any item on this checklist, please feel free to call us at 1-888-249-3978.

passport cards are much better than those enhanced driver's licenses. they are valid for 10 years (as opposed to 5 for the DL) and if u ever move to another state u don't need to pay the fee again! i used DS82 even though i never had the passport card before, but i had the book already. fits nicely into the wallet and when the Arizona Gestapo/SS asks for the "papiere" u can prove ur citizenship without spending the night in the concentration camp waiting for family members to dig out ur passport or birth certificate worship

Can I go get my passport renewed or do I have to wait until it is close to being expired?
If you still have over a year left why would you renew now? Would you renew car insurance if you still have 13 months left?

Quote from Waller :
Nice revisionist history there. That change has been responsible for new debt of about 7%. Bush and his Republicans are responsible for 53%.

"The first category the business cycle accounts for 37 percent of the $2 trillion swing. Its a reflection of the fact that both the 2001 recession and the current one reduced tax revenue, required more spending on safety-net programs and changed economists assumptions about how much in taxes the government would collect in future years.

About 33 percent of the swing stems from new legislation signed by Mr. Bush. That legislation, like his tax cuts and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, not only continue to cost the government but have also increased interest payments on the national debt.

Mr. Obamas main contribution to the deficit is his extension of several Bush policies, like the Iraq war and tax cuts for households making less than $250,000. Such policies together with the Wall Street bailout, which was signed by Mr. Bush and supported by Mr. Obama account for 20 percent of the swing.

About 7 percent comes from the stimulus bill that Mr. Obama signed in February. And only 3 percent comes from Mr. Obamas agenda on health care, education, energy and other areas."
Typical brain washed Obamanite. Take it to the Podium.

First, the better analogy would be "would you renew your car insurance if you still had five weeks left," as he only has 10 percent of his service from the passport remaining. And if your car insurance was going to go up 30% in five weeks, then yes, I'd save money by renewing a little early.

Did the same thing, didn't want to bother with taking own photos for $14.... Although their passport photo service is a joke -- they take your photo with a plain crappy digital camera in front of a small white drop-down cloth and they print in on regular photo paper.... If I didn't need these photos Today, I would never pay them for that kind of 'service.''''
