The Help emelvee Find a Job thread. Update post 628

tl; dr: emelvee is still looking for a job.

Not "official" or anything. Just figured I'd save you guys from me making multiple threads whenever I have a new job lead. Smilie I appreciate the help I've received in the past, as far as information on specific areas I've looked into. I'm still looking for a job, and two came up this week.

I really prefer to stay in North Carolina, hopefully around Raleigh, where we are now. But I've been looking for a solid year, and there isn't much happening in construction around here. I want to stay in construction - that's what I know and enjoy; I've been a Controller for four firms over the past 19 years, so I'm looking for a similar position.

One potential job is a decent sized electrical contractor in Omaha...yes, Nebraska. laugh out loud I'm willing to go just about anywhere for a job that I love (at least that I think I will love). But the midwest is near the bottom of my list of preferred locations.

The other is a general contractor in Los Angeles...just a couple miles from LAX. Larger company than the one in Nebraska, and at least twice the size (by annual revenues) of any company I've worked for in the past. I used to live in San Diego, and would consider a return to SoCal.

Both jobs are similar pay when adjusted for cost of living (the Nebraska job is a bit lower than my previous pay, but equivalent based on the cost of living; the L.A. job is a lot higher than my previous pay, but equivalent based on the cost of living). Of course these cost of living calculators are far from perfect. Both would have similar job duties.

I know most people would think I'm crazy to even compare the two locations. But the location is truly only one of many factors in the decision. Sure, it would be nice to enjoy the SoCal weather again. But I dread the traffic; masses of people; economic mess in CA; etc. I haven't even had a face-to-face meeting with either company yet, but I'm anticipating that will happen soon.

Since I know LA more or less (though I haven't lived in SoCal for ~13 years)...Omaha is the unknown. Can anyone that's lived there give their thoughts?

Originally this was L.A. vs. Omaha. Then emelvee was offered a job in High Point, NC. Took the NC job; got let go after 22 days of work.
Back on the job hunt: interview for a company in Rockville, MD on October 4.

In-person interview in Lakeville, MN on Monday, Nov 22. Cold

Helpful advice? Faint

The looking for houses is to get an idea whether or not I want to entertain an offer if one is presented.
They got floors, walls, & a roof no matter where you go. If you are offered a job, you take it. Why sit around at home all day playin on the internet for free when you can get a job & be paid to play on it?

So Max, what about areas in VA, like Reston? That doesn't seem too far to Rockville, and would be more convenient to DC.

Next to DC, VA is also very expensive. Trust me, I know laugh out loud

Reston and Herndon are good neighborhoods that are a little further away. If you want to live EVEN further away, Sterling is pretty nice too (it's split in to residential and commercial, residential you can get a decent sized house for the price of a condo that would be near DC).

You may have a hard time getting to Rockville for work though (traffic wise -- unless you leave REALLY early and come home REALLY late).

The 270 spur is nearly ALWAYS backed up during rush hour. 495 is mixed, some days you get lucky, some days you sit in bumper to bumper traffic.

ETA: You'd be heading away from traffic on the 270 spur, so it may not be AS congested. I head away from traffic too and that doesn't mean shit in this area laugh out loud

I'm dreading the traffic if we end up there. Frederick sounds ok if we want to commit to living there for this job. I wouldn't want to commute from there to Baltimore or DC for another job. We'll meet with a realtor next weekend. I appreciate the advice (and lyrics).

I don't know MD as well as VA, but I know Columbia is a pretty good neighborhood (a friend used to live the suburbs of the suburb of Columbia laugh out loud).

You may want to check the distance/commute and prices there.

If you have specific questions on the region, feel free to PM me. I'll even take you off ignore Wink

It's not too far from me. Briang lives pretty close to Rockville.

Only bad thing there is traffic - it can get hectic in the mornings and afternoons. Depending on where in Rockville your office is you could always take a bus or Metro.

Posted before I saw this reply.

Anything up and down 29 isn't too bad, just pricey. Columbia is nice but a little on the expensive side. Property taxes are high as well.

You could always look for a place in Northern Virginia as well.

It's expensive here too Wink Unless he's living far enough from DC. You must have missed that comment too. Someone quote me so he can see this!

I would not want to commute to Rockville from Northern VA. I'd pick Montgomery County, Frederick County, or Howard County as a target area. If picking a place like Frederick, you might find it easier to carpool. If you want to live near work, it will either be costing you everything or you will be the only one who speaks English.

Also, if you were previously seriously considering a job near LA, I'd think the cost of living would be similiarly high (maybe not as much in Rockville) but were you considering along commute there as well?

Personally I would not buy a house anywhere anytime soon since I think prices are going to keep dropping for a few more years.

I lived in Gaithersburg for a couple of years once, and at the time Rockville was way more expensive than Gaithersburg & Germantown.
