Morning everyone!

I was wondering if you SDers could help me figure out some techy things. I am trying to hook up internet service but I don't want it through the cable company and I don't want a land phone line. Do you know what the cheapest way to accomplish that? Also, I am trying to figure a way to not get cable and yet feel fulfilled when it comes to watching TV. Do you recommend netflix? What about live sports? I don't think I can get DH on board if he can't watch football.

(I heard GG is very good w/ these types of things Smilie)

You will have to get internet service through a telephone or cable company, or a fiber optics internet company. Reason? They're the only ones that have the fiber optic lines/telephone lines/cable lines laid out to the residence to give you internet connectivity.
The companies in each area are different.

But, as someone mentioned, the prices can vary depending on speed. Most companies these days offer different speeds. I have the basic level internet speed through comcast, and we manage to stream etc just fine. Sometimes it does feel slow, cos they throttle the bandwidth during high demand times. But so it is.

Another thing you can do for internet is get it off your cell service. Where you can pay additional to use your cell phone data connection for your laptops etc. This is called Tethering. Two ways to do that - physically connect your phone with a cable to your laptop; or, much better, use your phone as a wireless router, and set up a home wireless network. In the latter case the phone is known as a mobile hotspot. Sprint and other carriers charge some additional fees to use your phone as a mobile hotspot/tether. But there are software tweaks available that you can do at home to your own phone to bypass the phone company and get that functionality anyways. What kind of cell do you have/what kind of plan and how good is the reception? Those are answers to know before considering this.

Ok, so once you have the internet connection, you can piggyback in all kinds of ways.

1. you can do the Ooma Hub that HD just talked about. In the Hot Deals forum, if you search Ooma, there are several threads on it, old and new, where people post tips, deals, etc. And new deal threads come up all the time. Ooma is a box that looks like an answering machine. you connect the internet line to the back of the box. and then connect the box to your landline phone. It uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to let you make calls. You can also get something like Magic Jack or Vonage - all have costs, to get VoIP service.

2. you can use the internet connection to stream netflix movies. the netflix streaming movie selection isn't that current. but it's there. And you can use it to stream Hulu for shows/episodes you missed. You can download movies from peer2peer networks and watch those. or get digital files from friends who have them and watch those. how much of what you'll get to watch/how much you'll miss depends on what it is you guys usually watch. Cable only channels like Discovery, Nat Geo, HGTV, Food Network, Bravo etc don't really have too much by way of internet offerings of their current episodes. You can rent DVDs for some of the premium channel shows like Entourage etc, but most of the current offerings from HBO, Showtime etc are off limits. You also won't get CNN, CNBC if you guys watch those for international news/financial news as it is unfolding.

3. Football - ok, I speak your husband's language here. I'm an NFL fanatic. If you have a Digital LCD tv, it may already have a receiver built in. If not you can get a digital antenna. If you are not in the boondocks, or not in a city with lots of high rises, you can do pretty well with receiving the local stations. ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS. That means, you can get the games. What you won't get is NFL news, spot highlights of multiple games, analysis, special features etc - ESPN, ESPN2, NFL Sunday Ticket, NFL Network. There is no way around those without a tv package.

So, I think it's about weighing your pros and cons and seeing what you guys watch, don't watch. We're definitely in a similar boat and admittedly I am getting tired at paying so much for phone, cable, internet, and cell. But I have yet to find a way around that because we use all the services so much.

Quote from tn_native :
My basic, basic cable (not digital, no premium channels, 2 ESPN channels, the Food Network and HGTV) and cable internet is $135 a month. Mediacom has a monopoly here.

.....

it's funny. i've been reading the prices that all of you have been posting here and regardless whether you have a media giant or a smaller company supplying the services, whether you are in a rural area or an urban, the cost is about the same. It's 30-something for each service, plus taxes and fees.

Ready to stop shopping at the Concord store. Don't know if the trainer Jo is new or if I've just recently discovered her. Not only has she been taking over transactions from cashiers when she sees me -- and I'm good at coupons + clearance, but I'm not cheating -- she also just introduced the "one identical TQ per checkout" b.s. Bleah, I'm so frustrated with her. She's got the cashiers convinced that couponers are trying to cheat Target when we're well within their rules. (And I've only been using 2 or 3 identical TQs per shopping visit... This is not a "reasonable family quantities" situation!)

Anybody else encountered her? I'm working hard on being nice, but there's something new every time!

I saw this in T yesterday. I thought it was a joke (put up by some kids or something), then I saw it was on T cash register tape.EEK!

I'm certainly not anti-bouncy-ball bouncing, but those balls bounce far and high and fall down relatively hard because they're pretty dense. And like you admit, the temptation to bounce the heck out of them can be overwhelming. However, they can hit people, including small children and babies, knock down displays, break things. Maybe the problem could be better resolved by moving them up by the registers where they're less likely to be 'bounced' but I have to think this was an attempt at a quick fix to a real problem.

laugh out loud I've never seen kids bouncing those but I have seen the larger balls being tossed around the aisles.

Something to remember about tethering is that it can not be relied on as a constant source of internet access. Mobile companies can and do restrict data usage for their users, including throttling (slowing down service) to discourage heavy data usage. Sprint and some grandfathered Verizon customers are the only ones with "unlimited" data and from what I read last week, Sprint is going to limit that data usage for those that use the hotspot ($29.99 broadband sharing) service.

According to a leak out of Sprint Feed, good ol' yellow will be adding a 5GB cap to their mobile hotspot plans on October 2, with overage charges at five cents/MB. The good news is that this cap only affects the $30/month mobile hotspot data plan, so your regular unlimited data is safe to enjoy. But you should make the most of it while you can — there's no telling how long Sprint can keep up unlimited data on the iPhone.

If you go to TVFool.com, you can enter your address and it will show you all the TV station antenna's around you. My parents can get TV from stations 50 miles away. I actually put up 2 antenna's for them, so that they could point them in 2 different directions, They get twice as many stations that way. Now of course they get two ABC stations, but each of those stations now have sub channels. The sub channels have different TV programs. Plus digital TV is way clearer then when it was analog. The bad thing is that it doesn't travel as far. It's either you get the channel or you don't, unlike the olden days when it would come in all static but if you squinted you could still watch. laugh out loud

I have been cable free for 3 years.

Just wanted to give a heads up..Target has $5gc when you buy the Scrubbing Bubbles One step cleaner system and 1 refill. System is 9.99 and refill is 3.99. However, gc prompted after only scanning the system and did not group with the refill on receipt. Plus there is a cpn booklet in the box that has a b1g1 free refill cpn and $3 system cpns in it. Should make for some cheap toilet cleaners!

Have to agree with that. That's my only pet peeve. At least if the signal was bad I could still *hear* the program - and 75% of the time I was just listening not watching anyway laugh out loud

Thanks for the link. I will pass it on to dh and hopefully it will help him diagnose whatever our current problem is. Our 4+ yrs. of blissful cable-free-living were wonderful at the old house. Now if we can just get it back up and running.

How does this work? Target has buy 2 25 oz Beggin Strips, get a $5 GC.

CVS has Purina Treats, 6-25 oz 2/$6.

Buy the Beggin Strips at a regular register, get the GC and then get a price match at the service desk? Can't you keep the GC you earned?

I've never been able to do a price match to CVS because the policy specifically excludes shopper card discounts but I have read of others that were successful. If you were able to get a price match, it would be based on the refund value for the item, not the price before gift card deal.

As sad as it is to us, the store can enforce the one like tq because the tq usually states that on the front. I hear ya though, I get tired of being told that all kinds of misinformed things about coupons. shake head
