And on the meat talk.. I have always hated meat from WM
I have a bunch of gold n plump from that $5 MQ a few months ago, it tastes ok. I almost always cook all my meat in the crock pot first. Chicken with veggie bullion and once it is cooked I make dinner with it. I don't know, raw meat freaks me out. I could be a good vegetarian but my family loves meat.
I almost always make this chicken stuff once a week and it makes making dinner easy (the next dinner) because you can make it into chicken tacos, burritos, roll it in lettuce leaves or use it as a dip.
8 bell peppers any color
2 huge onions
a bunch of garlic
1 teaspoon, or more if you like to really taste it, red pepper powder, it gives it enough flavor you don't really need salt but can't really taste it.
cook 8 chicken breast in crock pot in veggie bullion with about a half cup of water or so.
Put peppers in food chopper and mince a lot
put onions and garlic in food chopper and mince a lot
Add olive oil to pan, put peppers and onions + red pepper in a huge skillet and let it cook and caramelize and soften for 10 to 20 minutes, depends on how your family likes it. It is almost like a sauce and needs stirred and watched often.
Once the peppers etc are getting reduced and onions disappear add the juice from the chicken but it needs to be one cup or less or you will have to cook it forever to get it dry enough to use as taco filling. Then shred and add the chicken. Cook until the juice is absorbed.
Even my super picky eater loves this and does not try to pick out the peppers, of course it would take hours to do so since they are nearly pulverized in the food chopper and melted into the chicken.
I can usually get a few dinners and few lunch for DH out of that one recipe. And they all swear they hate onions too!
gg- i think if you go back to europe you will be sorely disappointed in a lot of the food. lays and ruffles are the most popular chips in england last time i went a few yrs ago. at that time the most popular flavor was thai sweet chili. could not find ketchup or pickle-flavored at all. i found roast beef but it was a gourmet brand so it was roast beef w/ horseradish or something like that. cadbury is still one of the most popular and then probably nestles brand chocos although i think m&m's were around.
i still remember when i was in an irish bed and breakfast and a little girl from spain wanted some cheese. so they brought out a platter of various fresh cheese and guess which one she picked? the american cheese slice wrapped in plastic.
also, don't forget some farm practices in other countries are just as bad or even worse than here. that's how mad cow disease got around england, from feeding cattle byproducts to other cows. i still remember coming back from ireland and customs asked if i'd been to a farm and they took away my sneakers and sprayed them. gmo, hormones and pesticides are more ubiquitous in some other countries than here and then it's imported and ends up on our plates.
mcdonalds and starbucks have taken over the world. the first time i went to italy, you would follow the bullseye flags (but it wasn't target's) to the center of town where the church and any sightseeing would be. the next time i went, you followed the golden arch flags. my nephew didn't starve in italy b/c they would just get him french fries. in sydney there is a starbucks every 2 blocks. in melbourne it was a 7-11 every 2 blocks.
the US is no longer a mfr country. instead we export our service industries and foods like mcdonalds, starbucks, burger king, kfc, costco, home depot, target, walmart, gap, 7-11, pizza hut/dominos, tv shows, etc. that's why some people are mad that their countries are becoming too american and people want the american lifestyle (osama bin laden for example). you can pretty much get a coke anywhere in the world. we also export boring stuff like rice, wheat, beef and cotton which pretty much flies under the radar cuz it's cooked or processed and turned into something else, unlike much of the fresh fruit and some veggies here that is imported.
it can be good and bad. the food in london is so much better and cheaper now that they have so many foreign cuisines like japanese, thai and indian. but i was disappointed that there wasn't much good packaged food to bring home since much of it you could now find here.
of course taste preference is what we grew up w/. you may like some asian pastries better b/c a majority of them are less sweet but i think you will find the traditional ones tasteless and dry. nowadays there is a big european influence that has vastly improved the asian pastry industry. on the flip-side, latin-american and mediterranean pastries and desserts can be so sweet your teeth hurt. i love honey but baklava just tastes like pure sugar to me.
flug- i only went blueberry picking once so maybe it was just a bad yr. also went strawberry picking and not that good either but i want to go again. apples and corn are probably the most popular farmstand products around here b/c they are consistently better than the supermarket.
We are still kicking ourselves for not getting a quarter or half of a beef from a guy my husband knows from work. And he isn't raising any this year. Frickin' ethanol has driven the corn prices too high.
We found a farm that sells quarters of beef several times a year, I think we'll be getting some this winter. I'm sick of the recalls and eating crappy meat. Some things aren't worth the bargain prices or using overage. Don't get me wrong, that list is very short, because I like a bargain!
The farm also sells pigs/half pigs, so I'm debating doing both. I'm wondering if we can fit it all in our deep freezes. (I have 2) Hubby wants to buy another one, but I don't know were we'd put it!

I'm with you. We are in a coop where we can purchase high quality meat, but the prices are crazy!

Yes they are. And the clipping services I have checked are wanting .60-.80 cents each. Hopefully they will go down in price after the rush to get them is over. I have quite a few and I hope that I get the chance to use them all before they expire. lol...Sometimes I am such a slacker!

Oh yes lots of talk about ad matching. I ad match everytime I go, I just tell them the price. Usually don't have the ads but so far they never have questioned it. But if/when they do, no big deal, I will tell them that I was informed I no longer needed to bring it. They will either ad match or I will have item removed and go to the store where it is on sale. I don't get the weekly grocery ads (no paper delivery) and if I am going to take the time to go to each store to round up the ads, I might as well just buy the item at that store while I am there. I look at the sale ads online every Wed. and make a list of what is on sale at which store (just in case they ask) that I will be buying. Have the price listed next to the item on my grocery list and have it out when I get to checkout..Smooth and easy so far.

years ago, i went to a blueberry farm in Maine. all wild blueberries. growing along a cliff. you could go to the edge of the cliff and look out to the ocean. i remember just asking the farmer for permission to tarry there a while. we ate sun-warmed wild blueberries off the bushes and watched the ocean, and took in the salty breeze.

some family farms will let you pay in installments and let you reserve a certain amount of meat and particular cuts. and for most of them, you get to tour the farm, see what the animals are fed, how they are kept, how they are treated, how and where the meat is processed etc.

Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland etc are among the leaders when it comes to organic farming, banning certain pesticide use, banning certain food colors etc. They were always far ahead of the pack. And if you go to the German or Swiss countryside, you can tell the difference in the food. It's stunningly good food. And grown/raised/made in very simple ways.
England is not a good representative example of European food quality at all. Because in most urban areas of England, it's just like the US: processed food, more processed food, and some more processed food. Ditto the schools. It's why Jamie Oliver started his movement in the UK, to get processed food out of British Schools. Urban England has never been a good example of food quality.
But if you venture out to the British countryside, there are many, many families who have farm animals, grown their own veggies, pick fruit from trees, get fresh milk and cheese. What people see in London or Birmingham or Manchester or Leeds or such is really not representative of English life as a whole.
McDonalds, Starbucks et al... yes, American fast food is very popular in Europe. Although the quality and choice of foods offered in those fast food restaurants in Europe was vastly, vastly better than here, the last time I ate in one of those joints.

In Stockholm, there's this big McDonalds that is open 24 hours. It's actually the happening place to be, where the cool cats go at night post clubbing. Their shakes are yummy.
Years ago in London, at the starting edge of Oxford Street, they opened this KFC. It was all marble inside, with large picture windows. And their chicken tenders were amazing. The only KFCs I have seen in the US are rundown, dirty and in inner cities or industrial shopping mall strip roads. I have never been enticed to go into one. I never will.
Next time you go to England, and are looking for packaged food to bring back, holler! I'll be happy to give you suggestions. And I might even encourage you to smuggle in vacuum sealed sandwiches from Marks and Spencers. They are to die for.

p..s if you have a health food store or Whole Foods near you, and if you believe in homeopathy, we always take Nux Vomica 30c for queasiness, indigestion, stomach issues. A few pills 3x a day for 2-3 days and you should be good to go, even if it is some mild food poisoning.
