Today is Trevor's first Birthday!!!

besides rearranging freezers sil and i went to see footloose this past wknd. i made her buy me popcorn b/c i didn't want to see the movie. good thing too b/c it kept me occupied for half the movie. story line was full of holes and the movie dragged. kenny wormald had a horrible boston accent which he seemed to constantly forget. one of my roommates in college was from boston so i know. he kinda reminded me of shia labeouf from indiana jones and transformers. sil agreed the movie wasn't very good and said they should have had julianne hough sing since she's a singer. the best part of the movie was the dance scene the last 5 minutes of the movie. btw- i never saw the first footloose so i can't compare. so don't waste your money. and lots of teen/adult subject matter so not good for little kids.
then we snuck into the last 45 minutes of real steel that the teens and my dh were watching. i think we missed all the character development and saw most of the fight scenes. me and sil didn't think that movie was all that great either but the teens and dh liked it. probably the fighting. it does have good reviews. i think this is one of those movies that will look better on the big screen b/c of the big robots and boxing. if you have a really big screen tv at home you could probably get away w/ it but otherwise i think it's one of those rainy day keep the teens occupied at a discount movie kind of movie. it was not a wow! you have to see this movie kind of movie. not recommended for little kids.

people used to say it's sweater weather. i think if you have a water resistant fleece jacket or insulated rain coat for an outer layer on top of that at night, you should be good to go. it's weird but columbia and north face jackets are popular here if you don't need to dress up. esp in boston which is a big college town and a little colder than here. but you will see lots of them here too and wearing columbia is not a fashion statement by any means, it's a practical one. since we are not popping in and out of cars and have to walk alot, you kinda have to dress like you are going hiking. knapsacks are always popular too.
what's popular for women here are those weather resistant quilted or fleece lined microfiber jackets almost to the knee in black that's not a hiking jacket but not a formal coat either. looks like this but most people buy black w/ contrasting lining. of course i have one too. it's dressier than an actual hiking jacket and great just in case it rains.

oh, another thing. new yorkers love to wear black. everything black. in the wintertime, at least 90% of the people wear black winter coats. a majority of women carry black handbags. if you are all colorful on the subway platform, everybody knows you don't live in ny or not native anyway. but anyway, when traveling, dark colors disguise dirt. but if you don't have a black wardrobe, it's ok. midtown is full of tourists anyway.
and most people wear jeans unless they can't wear them to work. and you will see lots of young women wearing leggings and jeggings and not covering their butt. there will be some fashion victims. i like to people watch and spot the fashion victims when i am in au bon pain/dunkin donuts/starbucks and sit by the window.
speaking of food. if you would like to grab healthier food than mcdonalds, bk, wendys, etc. there are many regional sandwich/salad chains that are very decent and are all over the place. you can also go in there for a pastry and a cup of coffee to take a break, use the bathroom, breakfast, etc. soup and/or sandwich and a drink will run just under $10. pastry and coffee will be $4-5 so i usually try to go to dunkin donuts for breakfast or maybe mcdonalds. my favorite is french vanilla coffee, light and sweet at dunkin donuts. you should also try a boston creme donut there. that is their most popular flavor. right now they also have pumpkin donuts and muffins and coffee for fall.
au bon pain- i usually get breakfast there when i go into the city b/c i usually arrive b4 the stores open

also popular right now are japanese ramen places for noodle soups. about $10 b/c they are sit down and waitered. there is a fast food one right on 42nd street off 8th ave near the corner i think next to chevy's.
there are also many large fancy korean delis with huge salad bars all over the city. just look for one that has a sign outside that says they have seating. they are good for breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc. if you do get a salad, just be careful you don't get a lot of heavy stuff, esp fruit like melons. your salad will end up way over $10. they usually have a hot food bar too, soups and a grill for breakfast and sandwiches. lots of people run in there and get a bagel and cream cheese, ham and egg on a bun, etc and coffee for breakfast if they want hot food for breakfast instead of a pastry and coffee from a cart.
oh, and i have noticed a strange thing. if you are ever walking around the financial district during lunchtime or when people are getting out of work, you will notice that the men are generally very tall. it's weird.

but, you'd be walking a lot. and that warms you up. i don't know that i would recommend tons and tons of layers.
then again, i've always found that tourists in NYC dress far warmer than I do in real life. I guess I'm used to colder climes. And NYC always seems warm to me. Even in the dead of winter, it just doesn't have that "bite" in the air.

the layers part comes in handy when you are out all day. when the sun is shining it can be actually rather warm. but once the sun goes down it's usually rather chilly. when i'm in ny i can be there from 8am till almost midnite so you have to dress for everything, carry water, carry an umbrella, etc. and they are going to the statue of liberty one day which is in the middle of the water so it can be very blustery out there, even in the middle of the day. also if they go to the top of the empire state building it's outdoors and also can be very windy up there. ditto top of the rock. and sometimes they have the air conditioning on in the subway and many buildings even when it's cold out cuz they forget to turn it off.
you will probably see people out and about in shorts and flip flops too. but that's just for errands and short hauls. i've even seen people shoveling snow dressed like that. but you can't be out and about all day like that.
