I am in shock that that much time has flown past. I can't believe it has really been that long. And she wears the same size shoe as me now!
slickdeals is trying to copy facebook in that you get a notification every time you do something like rep, post, reply, or somebody else reps you, replies to you, etc. it's all logged on your *public stream* on the first page of your *user cp* that for some reason the button is called *notifications and activity* but that's only one of many functions on that page.
all this info is also copied onto your public profile page so everyone who looks at it can see exactly which posts you've repped, who's repped you on which posts, where you've posted, who you've replied to, who's quoted you, etc.
you can make your own public stream private by changing the settings and one by one deleting all the entries in your public stream which is very time consuming for a heavy user like bailey. and unless somebody informed you of this, you wouldn't know about these changes at all.
however, if you rep somebody or quote somebody, it shows up on their public stream unless they make their's private too. so i will pretty much not be repping anybody anymore unless i know they've made their activity logs private. but i'm not going to remember that. i'm having a hard time even remembering NOT to rep people anymore.
there is also a work-around for replies to not be logged but it's not pretty looking in the threads.
why did sd do this? b/c they didn't like that reps had taken on other functions besides showing that somebody found the post useful. they want to move to away from repping to another system but in the meantime made everything transparent. imo, there is no perfect system. i think if they just disabled the message function w/ reps but left it private it would have eliminated a lot of the other uses sd'ers use reps for.
what is the difference between the function on facebook and on slickdeals? on facebook you *friend* people and *like* companies so only the entities you choose have access to your info and you can customize who sees what even if they do have access.
on slickdeals, all of slickdeals has access to you unless you make it private. and even if you make it private, what you do to other slickdealers is still public.
to be very honest, when i'm bored i google people i used to know in elementary school, high school, former coworkers, etc. i can certainly see on a slow sd day clicking on sd'ers public profiles to see what they've been doing. let's face it, there are sd'ers we don't like. i may be curious, acerbic when i'm po'd, and a tiny bit of a troublemaker if i think somebody is doing something wrong b/c i don't hesitate to say something most of the time. but i don't stalk people, i'm never nasty or hurtful. however, i do know there are sd'ers who are nasty, hurtful and stalkers.
therefore, we all need to be much more careful of our actions on sd, esp if you are a longtimer and have accumulated a few haters here and there. just b/c you make yourself private, your actions in regards to others are not.
another observation is that the new left-side menu bar on the not-user cp page is very similar to yahoo down to the gear symbol. and it is just as buggy as yahoo's update.
imo, there are too many redundancies on sd. i think the my account button on the right should be the notifications & activity button on the left b/c that's what it really is, along w/ the pulldown menu for easy access to the functions w/o having to actually go to the not-user cp page. i call it the not-user cp page b/c the button is called notifications & activity page although they say it's the new user cp page on the actual page. i wish they would be consistent. and it is really should be called the My Account* page.

I'm not sure how to handle repping like in the printables thread now. I run out daily of reps trying to rep people for contributing. So some people won't get repped. Usually, it's just a matter of the order I saw the posts in when I was updating. But I also make sure to rep my other wikibees as they do so much there. Now I don't know how I feel about repping if my repping is visible to others ... if the person I rep doesn't have it private, right? Somebuddy's gonna be mad that I'm not repping them enough, you know?
Oh, and thanks again for helping me catch up on this. Damn that thread is LONG on the changes!

as for reps, i think reps are going bye-bye somehow or being radically altered. having reps and another incentive and reward method is redundant but who knows? having the reps now transparent makes the whole rep process silly, you can just thank them in a post b/c everybody can see it anyway. i never understood people posting their reps in hot deals. i think that's a newbie thing to do.
personally i would just put in my siggie that i don't want people knowing who i rep so i'm not repping anybody anymore. so i thank everyone for their contributions, just not personally.

The color scheme that these other people are talking about is midnight, which is not the same as what you're talking about. Regardless, we're still working on some changes. Now going on to a more ideological subject:
There is a small shift in fundamental principals of how we want to see the website used. As it is, reputation was designed for people to recognize people for making a useful post or thread that helps further the deal community. It should be that, when you rep someone, you truly, genuinely like the post or thread. If this is so, it should be worth sharing with others who share your interests, so they can look at your profile and also see what was "good" on slickdeals. This applies similarly to voting. It is the unique social part of our website where everyone helps each other to find good deals or interesting posts.
Instead, the reputation system is being used as a second "private" message system, sometimes with irrelevant comments, harassing messages, jokes, or is just being abused in cliques of friends and sub communities. People are taking efforts to circumvent the reputation system and also will go out of their way to find posts that are "reppable" even if that actual post they rep on isn't something they like, and as a result, actually make the reputation worthless.
By making voting and reputation public, our intention was to promote that social activity and transparency. Obviously, there are a few outspoken individuals here who are wholly against it and we've made a compromise by providing those privacy settings. However, we still want to shape the direction of our website so the default will likely remain open so that there is more transparency here on Slickdeals.
Additionally, Slickdeals will find a different way to incentivize and reward users for posting good content and doing helpful actions, rather than a frivolous insider-rep trading scheme. This will actually be worth something, rather than just a number. (Stay tuned for that).
It is by no means an attempt to irritate people, but we want to improve the experience and interaction here on Slickdeals, and we want people to share what they've found with others. We also want to improve the feature set and tools that are available to our users.
Some of you asked "why didnt you provide a new features guide or a tutorial". That was planned, however part of me wanted to test the natural usability of the new design. If people are able to see a new design and figure it out on their own without any help, then it means its a good design. If they have problems with it, then we have to refine it so there arent any problems, which is why we released it to see how you guys interact with it, and are making tweaks and changes as we go further.
We'll have a complete change/features guide for the new stuff here shortly once we've stopped making changes for this release. (It'd suck to write a guide, only to have to change 50% of it the day after release).

I agree about people saying thanks in their rep message and sometimes people write more so I like easy access - which was achieved with the old version.
But all in all, I think there are some nice features on this new addition. Really if we could just have other color schemes which aren't so bright, then it would be much better.

When HDD posted this morning, I had already left for my recycle bin diving route. Took almost 4 hours and quite a bit of driving, but I have 6 inches of inserts to show for it. I bought two Ts out of Dunkin' Donuts Whole Bean coffee today for the SIL (I had sent the SIL all the Qs, so I had to dumpster dive to find some to buy with)... wasn't a terrible price considering the $1.50/2 and $5 GC wyb 3. SIL was upset that her closest target didn't have but 1 whole bean. I bought 6 in Decatur and 6 in Huntsville West. Tailgate nuts scanned regular price today (first time I've been in a target all week).
2nd oldest niece has a college BB game on tonight... Brother told me that there is a camera there taping, but damn if I can find that game online. I've always watched her play when I couldn't be there, so tonight's a first to not do that (the download option last year worked like a charm but the school changed who handles the webcast... appears that only their home games will be online). Boo..
