Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 01:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

At the day you can print online monthly reward check (mainly INK catrildge recycling), immediately visit any Staples Store and buy something as cheap as posisble, maybe just 7 cents black&white copy, a balance coupon will print out with same expiration date with totally DIFFERENT CODE. There is no way someone can guess the # for that balance coupon,

Downsides

(1)Time/Gas/Car Wear & Tear to visit store
(2)balance coupon must spent one time later, no more balance coupon will be spit out then

Upside
(1)Balance Coupon is safe

Hope that helps! That is what I do every month now after I got 2 x $20 checks stolen last month. -Smilie

When one of my rewards was stolen, I contacted customer service via chat to cancel my account. I told them the reason was that my rewards were stolen, and they sent me a new reward in the mail.

Took about two weeks to arrive.

That is good advice but a pain for the reasons you stated especially if you have checks in your relatives names and would have to go in and shop at different times do it. My staples isn't close enough to make this easy either. However I think I will start doing it. Do you know if you can use the number on the receipt to buy online like you can with the checks? Makes a big difference to me because saving the receipts up for use online is my goal for larger items as the deals are far easier and cheaper with the ubiquitous $25 of $75 and such...

I know all that but in my situation it doesn't help. I don't feel like writing a book to explain vomit

Damn it! Add me to the list as well. 3 checks were stolen (all used in N.Y. - that seems to be the pattern). I contacted Staples, and they are sending "courtesy coupons" for the stolen checks and opened a new rewards account for me. The CSR was very familiar with the issue and among the possible ways for them to steal rewards checks, he did say that they figured out Staples' algorithm. I had force myself not to say that it doesn't really take that long to figure out the damn pattern if you manage to get someone's rewards number.

This is definitely taking the fun out of using rewards, especially trying to stack them for a big purchase, but there isn't any solution out there.

and again before I could even get to the store this evening and buy something for a buck to protect my check another $20 stolen... and again N.Y. different location. The thieves are selling them on ebay. I don't understand why Staples hasn't stopped this yet. Seems like it would be very easy to end it to with the kind of resources they have. !@#$!@#$!@#$%

Sorry to hear. There is no point of trying to play cat and mouse with these thieves. Just have them cancel all the checks, send you a coupon for the total and issue a new rewards number to start over..... until of course they steal that one.

I think that's the thing -- they are techonogically challenged, as I like to call them.

Has anyone had their $200 ink recycling check stolen yet?

Oh, and on top of everything, Staples sold my work snail mail address to Pitney Bowes where I now started receiving junk mail from them. I know it was Staples because I gave my work address to nobody else and I worded Address Line 2 in a particular fashion only for Staples.

Yeah, I cant wait for those to show up on eBay, SDer, eJunkie. I am sure people here will post links to those and state what a great deal it is to buy a $200 "coupon" for $100. That will top the stolen $100 Quickbooks gift checks.

In that case, I would love to get $200 cash from Staples like I did with Quickbooks.

Maybe we can work together to find these crooks. When I can canceled my account last time, my reward was used "online". I asked the rep if she can tell me where it was used and she said the order number was 9208664320 and it was shipped to New Jersey, but couldn't give me more information than that. However, you can check your order here:

http://www.staples.com/office/sup...istoryList

but you need the ZIP code. Unfortunately there are about 750 codes to check (see attached file). However, I figure I can narrow my search by looking at the cities and nearby cities in NJ where anyone's rewards were stolen.

Either this person purchased a stolen check or stole them themselves. Either way, I thought I'd put the information out there. Figure including the SDers in my search is better than me alone. I'm hoping the information will have a name/address/phone that will help start the search for these crooks.
