Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

Staples has had their head in the sand for too long. Earlier today the reward center rep implied they have a new system in place to prevent theft. I went to the store and was told "this $20 reward voucher was redeemed on-line previously". Manager called and got the $20 reissued. Cashier said I was the only victim one she can recall, but did remember some store memo on the topic.

They closed the old account and I opened a new one. They are sending $20 ink rewards voucher for the balance due on original account.

All factors considered I find it hard to believe why they are still screwing around with ink rewards. Empties can be had for 25 cents. $2.50 enables you to obtain $20 of merchandise, actually $ 21.40 depending on state tax negated. If you use one of their $5 off 25$ purchase you have greater benefit potential.

I just picked up merchandise providing $47 in rebates using ink rewards for photo paper and anti-virus software. The cost of the empties was less than $6.00.

Staples began tinkering with ink rewards in the fall of 2005, with store issued $3 merchandise vouchers for each empty, which was supposed to be a 3 month promo. In 2006 the Chicago region only had a few two week specials where each empty got you a $6 merchandise voucher, and the daily limit was 25 empties. Yep, $150 in merchandise credit per person per day. Go in with a few friends or family members and leave with $300 to $600 of merchandise credit.

Just to make sure, the stolen check was issued in July (earned by the spending/recycling in June).

What a bummer! Still being stolen?

Inks can be had for 15 cents..... 25 cents is way too much these days.

Its not about how much an empty costs. These fookers are probably trying to crack and sell hundreds of reward checks. It takes a heck of a lot of effort to drop off 10/20 cartridges for 100s of accounts. you'd probably have to tour the country by road to avoid suspicion laugh out loud. I manage a few rewards accounts for me and some relatives and I have to say, I hate driving from one store to another just to drop of cartridges for different accounts. Doing that 100s+ times would be a nightmare. Gas expenditure would eat up into profits as well. Why would a scamster go through all that effort ? He/she would just cut to the chase i.e., steal rewards by cracking the code/number and then sell them to unsuspecting consumers.

Has anyone heard of the "new" rewards checks being stolen? I had mine stolen in May (the last of the "old" style rewards checks). I hope I don't have to spend them ASAP from now on.
Will appreciate Razzputinn's reply: What was the expiration date of the stolen voucher? The last of the high-risk vouchers were issued in May and had an expiration date of 7/31/2012.

Interesting. A previous resident? A neighbor? Someone presumably using the address for their nth rewards account knowing the house is empty?

Nope, none of those. So you think someone could be using her address illegally? I could go to Staples and check it out. I am very honest so in a quandry about this. Tried googling the name but nothing.

You can call Staples Rewards and give them the rewards number. If the account has been setup with your address for months/years, then it's obvious that someone is using that address to receive rewards every month (probably the person has multiple accounts and needs a "real" address). Given the fact that the checks is $40, the owner of the account is a Premier member, which may indicate that he's been using the address for a while now.

I called. The account was created 2/16/2012 and a $50 purchase was made in MA. Forgot to ask the date. There is this $40 apparently for June(that doesn't make sense) and another $40 for the month of May that is still outstanding. These are ink recycling. I went online to try to create an acct., but of course one already exists. Maybe this weirdo looks for vacant property or those that are for sale and uses those addresses. idk
