Landers is considering a move towards the military, what do you think?

18,933 670 August 3, 2010 at 09:40 PM in Question
I'm looking at career path options and one is military, specifically Navy (Jokes allowed, go ahead Marines...). What do you guys think?

Thoughts on the military?

Thoughts on people you know joining the military?

Experiences you've seen in being with the military?

Nothing serious yet, just something in my mind still right now and trying to see/figure out what I want to do and how I want to do it.

Ah. Good point. Thanks for that.
Didn't want you to go coastie instead of navy due to the stay and protect our boarders...His group btw is/has been in charge of the transport home of our equipment, troops, etc from the sandbox...also he's in the reserves too!!!!

It will be good for him to be home again...they need their daddy home..hopefully that will settle down the youngest son that plays with my youngest son...we've had to limit that for the past few months...

Yeah. I hear you. idk..

I think that the military is good for serving my country and for getting a college degree.

What really affects my decision though is that I know I want to be married and have kids at some point in my life and I don't know if a military lifestyle is something I should be considering with that in mind.

She was hot in her day. Can't get over the big glasses. But she had a sweet smile.

Freedom isn't free. Any American should be ready to defend our country if needed, and not expect anything in return other than the knowledge that they have defended our freedom and preserved our way of life.

Most countries don't do ANYTHING for veterans. We do. As for the homeless vets that are forgotten about, I totally disagree with you. I spend 8 hours a day 5 days a week helping them get housing, food, clothing, jobs, medical care, you name it. The programs for vets are outstanding, but I doubt you really know anything about them. Be thankful we live in a country that does at least something for our vets. It could all change in a skinny minute with one war, one economic disaster. Be ready and willing to fight for your freedom without expecting anything in return, and be thankful when you do get something in return. And until you can see yourself doing either of those things, shut the fark up.
bleh. hate that argument. out of respect for landers i won't derail his thread. if you want to take it to pm's i'll be happy to talk about it.

I won't. I'll be checking all branches, including Coast Guard to be able to stay closer to home.
If one of the big factors is staying close to home, Navy ain't it.

I'd suggest going active national guard, actually; not many people know that exists. You can either go Air Force or Army, and it'll be just like you're on active duty in the regular branch, but you will stay in whatever state you decide to claim.

Just some food for thought.

It wasn't an argument, just my opinion. And it wasn't about you so I can't think of any need for me to PM you about your opinions. Dontknow

Very good point. My friend's husband is an F15 pilot and was in the AF, but switched to active Guard and he's been able to stay close to home. It's been great for them since they started a family and have little ones.

OP, keep us updated and don't sign anything on the spot. Recruiters can be slick. Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do.

So don't count on just being at home while serving in the CG.bulb

I wouldn't count on being close to home no matter which branch you join...particularly not the Navy.

All of the men in my life who've been in the military (uncles, grandfather, exes, brother) were away a lot.

The Navy does 4 years of "shore duty" and 4 years of "sea duty", but the shore duty can be anywhere as can the sea duty.

For instance, my brother was stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI for his shore duty and actually AT sea for his sea duty, while my exes best friend was stationed in a cruddy southern state for his shore duty and for his sea duty, he was the "navigator" for a dry docked ship. (Yeah...we teased him a lot for that.) So, anything can happen. You might think you're going to hit the high seas, but really...you're not. Or, you might think you're going to stay close to home, but you won't.

I think the military is a good choice if you have the right mentality, but I do think that you have to realize that the government owns your butt once you sign that contract. They'll send you where they want to send you once you sign - regardless of what they promise you before you sign. I have a lot of respect for our military men and women, but I will tell you that every one of my friends and loved ones who have been in the military have been pwned in some way by their contract (not going where they thought they were promised they'd go...not getting the job they were promised in writing...not getting the promotion in the amount of time it was promised...etc.).

Coast Guard is the biggest scam since One Hour Martinizin. They should pull the plug on those Navy wannabes.

I have to give my 2 cents for the Air Force. We had a friend who joined up as a professional. He was pleased how they treated him. Very good to his family.

I would talk to all the branches, including National and Coast Guard, to see what works best for you.

Here's an idea for your new tatoo...
