Landers is considering a move towards the military, what do you think?

18,933 670 August 3, 2010 at 09:40 PM in Question
I'm looking at career path options and one is military, specifically Navy (Jokes allowed, go ahead Marines...). What do you guys think?

Thoughts on the military?

Thoughts on people you know joining the military?

Experiences you've seen in being with the military?

Nothing serious yet, just something in my mind still right now and trying to see/figure out what I want to do and how I want to do it.

I'd suggest going active national guard, actually; not many people know that exists. You can either go Air Force or Army, and it'll be just like you're on active duty in the regular branch, but you will stay in whatever state you decide to claim.

Just some food for thought.
Close to home would be nice, but won't really factor in too much.

Active National Guard is an interesting suggestion. thanks!

What do you specifically want to do as a job? Do you know? I saw some stuff about medical, but wasn't sure if that was just a suggestion you were considering or what.

I actually did a report on this for college research project last year. I think that is the stereotype, but it turned out to be untrue. I'll see if I can find it and my sources.
Interesting, cool.

If we compared the IQ of all the people who joined the military vs. all the people who did not, who are the same age and then compare the IQ of the same subset of people in 10 years, 20 years, 40 years... what would the outcome be?

I'd expect the people who did not join to have a higher IQ from the start, and possibly later in life as well Dontknow
Hm...I'd bet against that. I know the IQs of my ex and my brother and they're way up there. Not that everyone I've ever met who was in the military seemed particularly bright, but I'd imagine that - as with any career - you have people who are, and people who are not.

Medical is what I'd like to do. I'm currently in the tech industry, but a medical profession is what I really am interested in.

Iagree

And even though I never served, I have friends that either are enrolled now or have served before.

Is that so? My friend who (who regrets it) joined the Army National Guard and has been deployed to the Middle East 3-4x already within a 5 year term and he is not in an infantry job specialty or a specialty that works closely with infantry. While he was stateside he had to go and dig ditches and fill sandbags for flood prevention. That I'm sure was a real blast. shake head

Yes, that is so. As opposed to going to live in Germany, Korea, or Japan. As opposed to having to move duty stations every three years. As opposed to having to spend 4 years at sea.

I have to give my 2 cents for the Air Force. We had a friend who joined up as a professional. He was pleased how they treated him. Very good to his family.

I would talk to all the branches, including National and Coast Guard, to see what works best for you.

Be very careful of joining the military as an MD(to pay for med school) if you know what career you want. I don't know anyone of my classmates who recommend military MD programs. Only one of them was placed in their choice field and if you don't match you can be sent as a medic and have no license when you finish bc you haven't completed residency.

Its a contract that quite honestly the military holds the upper hand in. If you want to be a generalist or general surgeon thats all fine and good, but specialist positions are hard to come by.

My hubs is in the Navy and in medical. Feel free to ask any questions you like or pm. There are tons of pluses and lots of negatives too. The Navy does have some of the best locations for bases-they're always near a beach!

OP, what medical field do you want to enter? Are you looking to be a MD or get specialized training by the military for a profession?

The military just opened a new medical training campus in Texas.
