Why am I gaining weight???NO OT if you please.

373 253 August 12, 2010 at 03:30 AM in Chat
Back in late May/early June I decided to go on a diet. Not only to lose weight but to learn to eat a little healthier since my diet was consistent on a lot of fried foods and soda and junk. I tried NutriSystem and found their food was pretty gross and I couldn't eat it so I am currently doing a Lean Cuisine type of diet.

My menu consists of a Lean Cuisine breakfast, lunch and dinner. They're generally around 230-300 calories each meal. I have a small snack in between each one. Breakfast is fruit snack, and lunch is a Nabisco 100 calorie pack of some type and then my dinner snack is a Skinny Cow ice cream (150 calories, low fat). This puts me at a bit below 1500 calorie intake daily. I drink water all day and the only downside is that I don't have much time to excersize so I only do about 15 minutes a day.

In the beginning things were great and I lost 30 pounds. I am nowhere near my goal and I've slowly started to put back a pound a week or so over the past 3 weeks. I don't understand why my weight is creeping back up and why I'm not continuing to lose weight. I have a lot lot more to go and shouldn't have reached a plateau this quickly and surely shouldn't be gaining it back....

It's really stressing me out, since I started this diet I've been obsessing about my weight and feel like I'm failing somewhere but can't figure out where...Any thoughts would be appreciated so I don't fall off my diet and give up...

I never said it didn't work, it does work, you starve your body of it's normal routine so it goes into back up. But you need carbs, they're good for you...but go ahead put your body through starvation, you'll lose the weight but you won't be as healthy. I also never mentioned cholesterol (that depends on what kinda meat you eat) I mentioned excess fat in your body (cholesterol isn't a fat). I didn't go by my gut, I said I had education in the matter (plus very well educated parents-registered dietician and Ph.D food scientist, pretty sure they know how the body works with food). I also meant the Atkins where they talk about slathering everything in butter and eating tons of fat...yeah eating good meats, eggs and salads is good for you but it's still a tricky area and people can get on the wrong end of it. Also there is such a thing as good carbs and bad ones, you have to learn to balance it all...but your body isn't meant to be in ketosis, it's a back up plan and that's what I'm trying to say is to do your diet and exercise healthily.
Not sure if my link didn't work but here it is again. Just because someone has a Ph.D doesn't mean they know everything. Some doctors think it's good, some don't.

This is epic BS. I lost 30 pounds on Atkins and despite eating virtually nothing except meat, eggs, cheese, and salad for 6 months..in other words fat fat fat..and more fat. Unlike traditional diets, you don't feel deprived on a low carb regimen. I had my bloodwork done before and after the diet. In addition to losing weight, my "bad" cholesterol plummeted 40% and good cholesterol went UP around 20%. Do your research on it and don't go by your "gut" or what conventional wisdom would seem to indicate. People have been eating virtually the opposite of the Atkins diet for 50 years (since the carb-friendly food pyramid came) out and they are FATTER THAN EVER. Google "Atkins testimonials" and you will find very few people who have a negative experience with it. Follow the diet..make sure you get enough leafy vegetables and low carb nuts for fiber, and you will be fine. It takes discipline, because if you screw up and exceed your carb limit, your body leaves ketosis and it takes 2-3 few days to get back into "fat burning mode". You need to stick with it once you get into ketosis, exercise, drink plenty of water, and you will lose weight.

How is Dr. Atkins doing nowadays? wave

There are many credible doctors who dispute the Atkins diet as unhealthy. I've done it and lost a lot of weight, and then gained it back, and hope I didn't screw up my body in the meantime. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. Besides, why focus on a diet primarily of meat, when you can eat fresh fruit and whole grains instead? hug

Avoiding excess carbs is definitely recommended, but the Atkins Diet is extreme.

I would recommend that you start with the basics and determine how many calories you body needs per day. Start with multiplying your body weight in lbs by 12 (e.g. 150 lb person will need about 1800 calories/day). One lb of weight = 3,500 calories so for every 3,500 calories less than the number of above, you will lose one lb of weight.

One warning is that water weight gain can have a big impact on your measured weight. I have found that you can lose a lot of weight when starting a diet and this makes it look like you are losing a lot more than you should. Therefore you need to monitor you weight over a long period of time an average out the ups and downs due to water weight gains and loses. I have gained 4 lbs in a day by eating too much salt!

Studies have shown the most people underestimate their calorie intact so be careful of this.

If you monitor your calories you will lose weight guaranteed - you can't change physics! All the business about what types of food you eat have little effect. It is more of a mater of what foods make you feel full so you don't eat too many calories.

As with all diets, once you hit your goal weight the big challenge is to transition into eating "normally" with the proper number of calories to maintain your goal weight. This phase is just as important as the diet phase. You need to keep recording calories until and if you get a "feel" as to how much food equals the number of calories your body needs to stay at your goal weight. Good luck and stay with it!

That was the point of my post...I intake 1500 calories daily..and dont lose weight. So this method doesnt -always- work, it cannot be guaranteed..I'm proof of that. I used to eat probably 3000 calories a day (which isnt hard to do btw) and now I was eating less than half of that and not losing.

Some of the posts here have had some good suggestions and as I mentioned before I'll keep you posted on the outcome. I'm not ready to give up. I quit smoking 2 weeks before starting my diet and that's gone much more smoothly and easily than trying to lose weight. So thats a double whammy of more healthiness that hopefully will allow me to live a happier, healthier and longer life.

I haven't read the whole thread, so someone may have already said this, but...

The foods you described in your OP are processed and pre-packaged. Those foods are not going to help you lose weight. Processed flour, rice, vegetables, meats, etc. are stripped of anything that's good for you and your body is just going to continue to search for those things, or store fat because it thinks it's starving since it isn't getting what it needs.

Also, stress isn't going to help you lose weight. If your diet is causing you stress, you're not going to lose weight.

Try eating whole, natural foods. You can use them in recipes. You don't have to just eat pieces of fruit and whole vegetables.

Increase your vegetables considerably and cut back on meat. If you're a meat-eater, you don't have to give it up, just stick to 3 oz./serving and if you can, make sure it's the best possible. I'd recommend free-range, from animals that are treated well, because I believe that what gets into your animal gets into body. If the animal you eat led a happy life, it will be a healthier choice.)

Balance your meals and don't cut out any one thing. I know that a lot of people tout Atkins, but if you decide to go low carb, maybe try South Beach, instead and really use good-quality ingredients. Use organic fruits and veg. when you can, because your body works hard to process those pesticides. And I also recommend using meat, dairy products and eggs from animals not treated with hormones/antibiotics. Have you noticed that girls are developing much younger? I mean...if the hormones make the cows and chickens bigger...don't you think they'll make you bigger?

Are you exercising at all? Even a few minutes more than you were doing will make a difference.

These are just my thoughts and opinions. I know that the TV shows a lot of people losing weight on those commercial programs, but the foods aren't as healthy as cooking for yourself, at home, would be. I know it can be hard to cook for yourself. It takes some time. But, if you plan ahead just a little, it can be pretty easy. You can even get good ideas for quick meals that are made of whole foods from places like the South Beach Diet, or even the Flat Belly Diet. Those have quick meals that are easy to fix and also nutritious and whole, if you're looking for something fast and convenient.

How about the South Beach Diet? It's sort of a modified Atkins with a tilt towards more lean proteins and preferred carbs.

Excerpted from South Beach Diet Plan [southbeachdiet.com]

"The South Beach Diet is more than just a diet it's a lifestyle thats all about loving the food you eat as you lose weight and improve your health. Unlike other diets that are low-carb or low-fat, the South Beach Diet plan focuses on eating the right carbs and fats, with an emphasis on nutrient-dense and fiber-rich vegetables and fruits, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, whole grains and legumes, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Plus, you can eat snacks and dessert on even the strictest Phase of the diet (in fact, its recommended!)."

Toss the lean cuisine and focus on 5 Hour Energy shots and exercise. (in the form of shopping)

J/K I know that probably isn't the ideal but that's what I've done. Certainly nothing to brag about because it's probably disenigrating my pancreas, liver, and kidneys.

Definitely up the water intake and exercise.

My uncle is a doctor and he told me that if people been overweight for at least 10 + years, the chances of every losing weight and maintaining it is pretty slim...since your body have already adjusted to the condition of obesity...
Once people pass age 45, they can begin see a decreases in weight if they were overweight... But the chances of young overweight people losing the pounds and keeping it off is pretty slim in his opinion from all the people he seen at his work

Hey there,
Trust me, I've struggled myself.
Are you snacking at all? Every little calorie adds up, when you take one of this and one of that.
Also, walk everyday, either on the treadmill or not.
Lastly, don't weigh yourself EVERY day, it's very unreliable, instead, weigh yourself twice a week. Sometimes, you just need motivation. My motivation is that I don't want all of the terrible diseases, as they do run in my family and I see how they can affect you. Good luck, and I hope you lose!

A couple of surveys said Jenny Craig has the best food.

Do you suffer from diabetes or a reduced sense of smell or taste, which can cause people to eat more because they think they're not eating enough? Are you eating food that doesn't taste good? That can do the same thing, and Healthy Choice and Marie Callender usually taste better, probably because Lean Cuisine often contains that stinky tan sauce. I usually avoid buying prepared foods because they tend to have more calories and sodium per pound. My only snack is generic Cheerios, which I eat all day. Stick with a primarily carbohydrate diet, and avoid Atkins crap. Atkins probably died from what his diet was supposed to prevent, and for 30 years he never published his data, always claiming he didn't have enough money, yet he also boasted about having data on 20,000 diet patients. He claimed to be a cardiologist, but I don't think he did a cardiology residency or was board certified for the specialty.

15 minutes of exercise probably burns just 75-100 calories, and it's rare for any exercise to burn more than 600/hour. Do what Libertarian said about lifting weights because muscle burns a lot more calories than most other tissues do.

I lost 80 lbs. over 3 years and exercise 2 hours a day, including lifting, running, and lawn mowing (unpowered mower, 2 days a week).

Pft....where does your uncle work, so we can all avoid him?

Your body is starving so your metabolism has slowed down & it's retaining fat. You should be eating at least 2000 cal per day.
