You no/low carbers out there - what are good snacks I can pick up for a picky DD and my not-quite-as-picky dh?? This diet for them is so going to kill our budget... *sigh*

ETA:

Oh, I got a 10% off your baby registry coupon today. Has anyone used this before? Could I add something (like a dresser or shelves) and then use the q? TIA

Pork Rinds (need Homer to say hmmm)
Beef Jerky (Turkey Jerky, etc)
Slim Jim sticks (I think they are low carb)
Cauliflower (love it raw)
Bacon (need Homer to say hmmm)
Deviled Eggs
Low carb tortillas (for crust) made into Pizzas (my favorite!)
Baked Parmesan cheese wafers
Bacon Wrapped Jalepenos, stuffed with cream cheese

Can you tell my brother used to Low Carb until his Gout kicked in...
In addition to those great suggestions, I eat low fat string cheese, pickles, pepperoni (regular or turkey), celery sticks, fried cheese, crustless pizza, crustless quiche ( I found a recipe online that I used to make, don't have it right this second), turkey and swiss cheese wraps.. to name a few moreWink

Agree on the 'slap in the face to taxpayers.' I have nothing against people who qualify for food stamps or any other form of government assistance - I am pretty sure my family is just within the income guidelines to qualify for WIC, just haven't looked into further because though we would qualify we do not need it. Just because you qualify does not mean you should take it. To me, if you can afford luxuries/wants then you don't need assistance. Yes, it is an opinion....and one I will stick to because I don't think our culture at all understands wants vs. needs.

I recently had a friend who was upset that she could not afford to take her child to the dentist for a check-up because they did not have dental insurance. They had just purchased a brand new living room set literally the day before from a big furniture store...not cheap. The furniture was justified as a need while the child went without dental careConfused The old furniture was not in poor shape BTW...I think I would have sat on the floor before I let my child go without something I thought they needed.
I agree.. I have been very tight with money before, and didn't spend on any extras.. gotta let the needs be taken care of and sometimes the wants must wait until we are more financially stable.

Quote from ank220 :
This is what worries me about dh being on this diet. *sigh*

Thank you for the suggestions!!

I agree!

Just heard that my little 4 y.o. nephew is being admitted to the hospital. He had gotten a cut in his foot a few days ago. SIL cleaned it at the time, but didn't look at it again until today. Stress It has turned black and is infected. Docs are afraid it may spread or has spread to his heart. Pray that it is not the case....
Sorry Ank.. Praying everything goes well at the hospital!

as for lowcarb, it can be very healthy as long as you use lean proteins and plenty of veggies. It's similiar to the way I eat except I also eat whole grains. No sugar, and no processed foods though nod

I agree 100%. I followed a low carb lifestyle for about 5 years before I had my last DD. I lost a ton and kept it off until pregnancy.. I used to hate when people would tell me how unhealthy it was.. I always asked them what seemed so unhealthy about eating lean meats, tons of veggies, and avoiding processed stuff and sugar.. And tootsie, I did add whole grains in as well, but not until I had lost about half my weight.. I added healthy nuts first, then berries and melons, and then some whole grains too.
When I had my physical after 2 years on the eating plan, all of my labs looked great.. despite all those people who thought I would have high cholesterol. There is a myth that all low carbers sit around and eat bacon, eggs, and fatty foods all dayWink

Okay - just heard about our nephew. He is being prepped for a small surgery - they are going to cut the area that has the infection, let out the gunk, and take out any dead/nasty tissue - then doing lab work to see what kinds of infection/bacteria, etc... is in there. They did a bone scan or x-ray - some kind of test or scan - and the infection is not in the bone from what they could tell - which is great news. He did have streaks going up his foot and to his ankle, so they are watching his blood/heart. He will be in the hospital for at least 24 hours after they do the surgery and will have IV antibiotics. Any longer stay will be dependent upon what kind of infection he has, if it manages to spread into blood/heart, and his reactions to the antibiotics. Overall, it is good news so far.

A similar thing happened to my brother when he was a young teen - he had been out biking and fell and scraped up his elbow pretty bad. He didn't tell anyone (cuz he was biking where he shouldn't have been), and when he did get sick he refused to go to the doctor. It wasn't until he was basically delirious that my mom managed to get him to the ER. They told her that if she'd waited a few more hours we would've likely lost him. The infection had gone into his blood stream and also into his heart. His heart became very enlarged. I think he was in the hospital for around 2 weeks or so - it was pretty nasty.

***

In non-emergency news... ugh. I am having lots of muscle cramps today - especially in my calves and my feet!! Seems like they keep wanting to cramp up. I think the baby dropped more and may have even turned head down. I felt a weird pressure low in my abdomen earlier today - almost like something plopped onto my bladder or something, and ever since then I feel like I can't sit normally. I have to sit very unladylike with my legs open! Drives me nuts!

Thank you all for the suggestions on the low carb diet. I am one of those folks who are skeptical about the diet - but I think it's mainly because I don't know enough about it. I do worry about DH because he has super high triglycerides and gout - so the high amounts of protein make me worry he's putting himself on the road to pain and suffering. I think that the lack of fruits would drive me nuts personally... I'm a fruit person for sure! Grains, I like 'em whole - so that's not too much of an issue to me (not that I don't ever eat non-whole grains... lol...)

But... we'll see. Right now I'm not dieting - I *might* do the low carb thing with DH once the baby is born (or maybe after breastfeeding is done... I guess I'll probably need the caloric intake), but I really haven't had that struggle before. I've been able to maintain a healthy weight/blood counts on my normal (non-pregnancy laugh out loud ) diet. I also tend to eat significantly smaller sized portions than DH though (and lots more variety of fruits/veggies) and I drink tons of water, so that may be a big key in my success. I guess it may partly depend on your general make up too - i.e. some diets may work better for one person vs. another. *shrug* I'll be interested to see how DD does. She is a definite carb-aholic - so breaking that will be quite interesting. DH and DD went to work out tonight. I think it's cute that DH went with her to the spin class. I never would've thought he'd do that! *laugh*

Ank, for me this way of eating keeps my cravings to a minimum since I don't have swings in blood sugar. My energy stays high, I don't have sugar headaches, and I generally feel so much better. If I actually sit down and count my calories, without trying I eat around 1500 per day. Some days a little more, some a little less but I'm never hungry and that's key for me nod

That is how I feel as well. I was trying to explain that to some friends this weekend. They were having birthday cake and encouraged me to just have "a little".. but what they don't realize is that I haven't had sugar in a month now and I don't crave it anymore. That one taste would open up doors that I am trying to keep closed. And it is weird, but I don't ever seem hungry lately. The first time I tried, I remember being really hungry in the beginning. but now, I just make sure I eat atleast every 6 hours, and I am good... Having a stable blood sugar makes me feel much betterbounce

Ank- I'm very slow replying (had a busy weekend/no reading), but you asked about my cashier, Mavis. She is a youngster. I'm guessing early 20's.
Incidentally, I also have an aunt (by marriage) named Mavis, who prolly is in her late 60s or early 70s. She was the only Mavis I'd ever heard of until recently.

I really think I need to get off sugar! Damn those M&M coupons and the chocolate coupons! Plus all the soda/frapp coupons. I was thinking about this the other day but I still want my coffee boost but can't stand real coffee, just so strong. But that crazy Jillian trainer has a drink made with natural caffine and lots of vitamins and such and it is available at Target. I think I need to check it out. I should write to her and tell her she needs to put out coupons! It sucks that so many of the food items with coupons out have so much added sugar. I think it is why I feel so freaking tired all the time, to much chocolate cravings. I did manage to get my Swinn bike and a bike trailer for my lilB just before T stopped carrying my size. So as soon as I get the trailer together I can go riding and mix up the walks with the jogging stroller.

Oh yeah if anyone was wondering how those 10% off Swinn (sp?) TQs work, well they require the cashier to enter the price. I got a Swinn bike and two replacement inner tubes (also Swinn) so I used two of the 10% off TQs and each one brought up the 'how much is this coupon?" she looked up the price of the tube and on one she entered .75 cents and on the second one she entered .80 cents.

Ank, I hope your nephew is okay and the surgery is over quickly.

Teri, stay safe from the storms! I am afraid of them too.

Hmm... so this could really help DD if she sticks it out and doesn't cheat. Right now she's complaining of feeling hungry and wanting to snack, so it's kind of hard. I was trying to get them both to stay away from diet sodas and caffeine too - at least through the induction phase. From what I'm reading that could be a big factor in success if you are addicted to sugars (which I think DD is for sure.)

Maybe I should go on a low-carb diet too. While my weight hasn't been a struggle for a long time, my energy level always is...

Starting to think the same thing about getting off of sugars.

Hmm... interesting about the Schwinn. Can I ask how much the bike was or approximate prices. DD was saying her's needs fixed, but we're thinking maybe just junking it and getting her a better one. DH is getting an FSA reimbursement from all our stinking medical bills we've had at the end of this week, and her Bday is coming up in October - so it may be a good time to grab her a decent gift.

I guess they are already done with the surgery - it went super fast. So far everything is looking pretty good for the little guy and they expect him to go home late late tomorow or early Thursday. I guess that's one of the benefits of being so young - you bounce back and heal faster! It sure is a scary thought, though.

We're getting some storms coming through - supposed to be nasty except for Weds. Eve/Thursday - then back to nasty for next week. Yuck!!

Mavis is beating me up now! It's funny - oldest dd and I were taking turns reading through a book out loud tonight, and she's like "are you okay"??? I'm like, what??? Apparently I was sucking in some major air or pausing a lot to breathe while reading. It's kind of hard to breathe and talk a lot, but I guess I've gotten used to it because I didn't even really notice what I was doing. *shrug* I keep hoping all this stuff means that this little darling will be making her appearance sooner rather than later!

I'm kind of excited. DH works with a young woman (single mom) who has been asking him about my couponing (he brags about me a lot, apparently... Big Grin ) She's extremely interested in learning, and she seems like a great woman and like we have some things in common. I think I may have a fun RL couponing buddy!

In regards to the food stamps debate, I completely agree. I happily donate every couple months or so, and I see the people there that desperately need a hand, and I appreciate that. I understand being down on your luck, losing your job, getting a pay cut, etc. Heaven knows my hubby and I have been through it in the past 5 years, and could have qualified (probably STILL qualify) for assistance many times over. But the thought of someone else paying my way sits ill with me and I just can't do it. I'm not saying the OP of the scenario in question did or did not misuse the program, because I don't know enough about the details of how it works and whatnot. But I am saying that the needs vs wants and learning to live within the constraints of your budget and the basic human drive to better yourself - all those things are key elements of achieving the American dream for yourself, and without them, well, you're stuck.

And on to a completely different subject - hubby's softball team won the championship tonight!! I am SO happy for those guys. They played so very well, and it just seemed a fitting end to the season. They gave the trophy to the son-in-law of the pitcher who died, and he is going to give it to his mother-in-law, the widow. Weeping Still such a shock that he's gone.

And ank, that's so scary about your nephew! I have a four-year-old boy and can't imagine my poor baby going through that. Will definitely pray for him.

Speaking of my boy, he is having some strange poop problems. (its been awhile since we mentioned poop, right?!) He took an abnormally long time to potty train, and the last mountain we had to climb was getting him to stop pooing in his pants. He would do like a little bit in his pants, and then we'd put him on the toilet and he wouldn't go. Anyway, he finally grew out of that and hasn't done it in forever. Until now. I'm thinking its the Fiber Plus cereal. I think he has just had too much fiber. Hubby thinks so, too, and that maybe he feels like he has to pass gas but when he does, it ends up being a little more than gas. Not to totally gross everyone out, but does anyone have any input/experience on this? I'm going to really tone down the fiber and get him eating bananas and stuff, but any other ideas? He said his tummy hurt a little bit. I just feel at his age, he should have a little more control than that.

Keeping in mind that I am pretty sure he's on the very mild/high functioning end of the autism spectrum (we've never had him tested, but my mommy instinct knows he's not completely like other kids) and some things just don't sink in very well with him. I feel like a failure as a mom that he is still struggling with bathroom issues at his age, and I guess I'm looking for reassurance here.

OK, off to bed I go.
