You no/low carbers out there - what are good snacks I can pick up for a picky DD and my not-quite-as-picky dh?? This diet for them is so going to kill our budget... *sigh*
ETA:
Oh, I got a 10% off your baby registry coupon today. Has anyone used this before? Could I add something (like a dresser or shelves) and then use the q? TIA
Beef Jerky (Turkey Jerky, etc)
Slim Jim sticks (I think they are low carb)
Cauliflower (love it raw)
Bacon (need Homer to say hmmm)
Deviled Eggs
Low carb tortillas (for crust) made into Pizzas (my favorite!)
Baked Parmesan cheese wafers
Bacon Wrapped Jalepenos, stuffed with cream cheese
Can you tell my brother used to Low Carb until his Gout kicked in...
I recently had a friend who was upset that she could not afford to take her child to the dentist for a check-up because they did not have dental insurance. They had just purchased a brand new living room set literally the day before from a big furniture store...not cheap. The furniture was justified as a need while the child went without dental care
Thank you for the suggestions!!
I agree!
Just heard that my little 4 y.o. nephew is being admitted to the hospital. He had gotten a cut in his foot a few days ago. SIL cleaned it at the time, but didn't look at it again until today.
*SNIP*
as for lowcarb, it can be very healthy as long as you use lean proteins and plenty of veggies. It's similiar to the way I eat except I also eat whole grains. No sugar, and no processed foods though
I agree 100%. I followed a low carb lifestyle for about 5 years before I had my last DD. I lost a ton and kept it off until pregnancy.. I used to hate when people would tell me how unhealthy it was.. I always asked them what seemed so unhealthy about eating lean meats, tons of veggies, and avoiding processed stuff and sugar.. And tootsie, I did add whole grains in as well, but not until I had lost about half my weight.. I added healthy nuts first, then berries and melons, and then some whole grains too.
When I had my physical after 2 years on the eating plan, all of my labs looked great.. despite all those people who thought I would have high cholesterol. There is a myth that all low carbers sit around and eat bacon, eggs, and fatty foods all day
A similar thing happened to my brother when he was a young teen - he had been out biking and fell and scraped up his elbow pretty bad. He didn't tell anyone (cuz he was biking where he shouldn't have been), and when he did get sick he refused to go to the doctor. It wasn't until he was basically delirious that my mom managed to get him to the ER. They told her that if she'd waited a few more hours we would've likely lost him. The infection had gone into his blood stream and also into his heart. His heart became very enlarged. I think he was in the hospital for around 2 weeks or so - it was pretty nasty.

In non-emergency news... ugh. I am having lots of muscle cramps today - especially in my calves and my feet!! Seems like they keep wanting to cramp up. I think the baby dropped more and may have even turned head down. I felt a weird pressure low in my abdomen earlier today - almost like something plopped onto my bladder or something, and ever since then I feel like I can't sit normally. I have to sit very unladylike with my legs open! Drives me nuts!
Thank you all for the suggestions on the low carb diet. I am one of those folks who are skeptical about the diet - but I think it's mainly because I don't know enough about it. I do worry about DH because he has super high triglycerides and gout - so the high amounts of protein make me worry he's putting himself on the road to pain and suffering. I think that the lack of fruits would drive me nuts personally... I'm a fruit person for sure! Grains, I like 'em whole - so that's not too much of an issue to me (not that I don't ever eat non-whole grains... lol...)
But... we'll see. Right now I'm not dieting - I *might* do the low carb thing with DH once the baby is born (or maybe after breastfeeding is done... I guess I'll probably need the caloric intake), but I really haven't had that struggle before. I've been able to maintain a healthy weight/blood counts on my normal (non-pregnancy
Incidentally, I also have an aunt (by marriage) named Mavis, who prolly is in her late 60s or early 70s. She was the only Mavis I'd ever heard of until recently.
Oh yeah if anyone was wondering how those 10% off Swinn (sp?) TQs work, well they require the cashier to enter the price. I got a Swinn bike and two replacement inner tubes (also Swinn) so I used two of the 10% off TQs and each one brought up the 'how much is this coupon?" she looked up the price of the tube and on one she entered .75 cents and on the second one she entered .80 cents.

Teri, stay safe from the storms! I am afraid of them too.
If you live in or near San Antionio TX, still STFC.

Hmm... interesting about the Schwinn. Can I ask how much the bike was or approximate prices. DD was saying her's needs fixed, but we're thinking maybe just junking it and getting her a better one. DH is getting an FSA reimbursement from all our stinking medical bills we've had at the end of this week, and her Bday is coming up in October - so it may be a good time to grab her a decent gift.

We're getting some storms coming through - supposed to be nasty except for Weds. Eve/Thursday - then back to nasty for next week. Yuck!!
Mavis is beating me up now! It's funny - oldest dd and I were taking turns reading through a book out loud tonight, and she's like "are you okay"??? I'm like, what??? Apparently I was sucking in some major air or pausing a lot to breathe while reading. It's kind of hard to breathe and talk a lot, but I guess I've gotten used to it because I didn't even really notice what I was doing. *shrug* I keep hoping all this stuff means that this little darling will be making her appearance sooner rather than later!
I'm kind of excited. DH works with a young woman (single mom) who has been asking him about my couponing (he brags about me a lot, apparently...
1/1 ten ct. Nestle Drumsticks TQ

And on to a completely different subject - hubby's softball team won the championship tonight!! I am SO happy for those guys. They played so very well, and it just seemed a fitting end to the season. They gave the trophy to the son-in-law of the pitcher who died, and he is going to give it to his mother-in-law, the widow.
And ank, that's so scary about your nephew! I have a four-year-old boy and can't imagine my poor baby going through that. Will definitely pray for him.
Speaking of my boy, he is having some strange poop problems. (its been awhile since we mentioned poop, right?!) He took an abnormally long time to potty train, and the last mountain we had to climb was getting him to stop pooing in his pants. He would do like a little bit in his pants, and then we'd put him on the toilet and he wouldn't go. Anyway, he finally grew out of that and hasn't done it in forever. Until now. I'm thinking its the Fiber Plus cereal. I think he has just had too much fiber. Hubby thinks so, too, and that maybe he feels like he has to pass gas but when he does, it ends up being a little more than gas. Not to totally gross everyone out, but does anyone have any input/experience on this? I'm going to really tone down the fiber and get him eating bananas and stuff, but any other ideas? He said his tummy hurt a little bit. I just feel at his age, he should have a little more control than that.
Keeping in mind that I am pretty sure he's on the very mild/high functioning end of the autism spectrum (we've never had him tested, but my mommy instinct knows he's not completely like other kids) and some things just don't sink in very well with him. I feel like a failure as a mom that he is still struggling with bathroom issues at his age, and I guess I'm looking for reassurance here.
OK, off to bed I go.
