All this talk of creative kids rooms - makes me feel bad for my kids!! laugh out loud 'Course, we're renting, so I don't want to get all crazy. Gives me great ideas, though, for when we do get our own place.

.teri., I love the pics of your place. Color scheme and everything. Very nice.

OK, off to make a stop at the grocery store and then pick up my little guy. Gotta make up my list for T - hope to make a run tonight. What's everyone getting this week, other than Mr. Clean?

dxh has him at the surgeon's office. I'm on standby until he calls me to let me know if they are admitting him. I'm just across the block from the university medical center so quicker to get there from work then go to the doc's office first. Gosh, we had such a weekend, he was sick again, still with what we thought was pneumonia. Turns out it was the tubing from the last shunt revision had somehow infiltrated his lung and caused it to fill with fluid and get infected.

Plus, the shunt isn't working so add that on top. Poor guy has been sick for months now and I just hate it for him. The worst thing as a mother (as you all know) is not being able to help our kids. I hope this will be the last time and I hope they can clear his lungs up.

My kids rooms, play room and school room used to be in a upstairs that was an attic but has been sort of/mostly finished. The stairway was kind of narrow and steep. I did green steps and light blue walls and then used craft paint to do a tree, birds, flowers, etc. I did flowers on the risers of the steps too. It all stayed and held up just fine for years. We have a renter in that house now and last time I was in there it was still there -- she has lived there 13 years.

I had forgotten all about that. So, yeah, if you want to do something, just buy the cheap craft paint for your art work. It will work fine.
I'm in awe of all the wonderful painting everyone's done! The one time I tried something creative, I also used the little craft paints. However, not knowing what I was doing, I just bought the colors I needed, not noticing that they also come in gloss and matte finish....so I ended up with a pretty um..."interesting" nursery wall. laugh out loud

Sorry I must have missed tm4d post about the mistints, but they are exactly where you said, also sears carriers paint so you may find some there, that's where I scored the 2 gallons of blue for my background. I was unaware they are making people re tint it, but I actually had them do this to a few of my mistints to get brighter colors.
Ltl7 that sounds awesome I was thinking of characters but wasn't sure I could pull them off.

Good luck at the dr. I need to go haven't been since after ds was born!

I am on my way to a Dr appt (overdue by a few years Embarrassment ) so I kinds skimmed over the last 2 pages and posting a quick reply:

Mistints are usually in the paint dept. on some plastic shelves by the paint desk. At least at Home Depot and Lowes, that's where I have always seen them. You can also ask. Now they are usually funky colors, since people were ordering the paint, then leaving, coming back in a few days and buying the paint they ordered as a mistint. Now, they have to add other tints to make it a different color.

Myluv, I love the room. I did that for my kids when we moved in to this house. It also had to be gender neutral. What I did was got some green for grass, and sky blue, made a wavy line, and painted green under, and blue on top, including the ceiling.

I then found coloring book pages of their favorite characters online, put them in photoshop, blew them up to around 2'-3' tall, printed it out, taped it together, got some transfer paper sheets (think black carbon paper between sheets in old forms) from Michaels, a black paint pen, and a bunch of the cheap craft paint. I would put the transfer paper on the wall with the blown-up color book page over it. Trace out the character, take it off, outline with the black paint pen, then paint the inside with craft paint. Add trees and rocks and stuff for effect. My kid's room had (kid) life-size Tommy & Chucky, Dora & Boots, Caliiou and Rosie, Max & Ruby, Arthur & D.W., Backyardagins, Maggy and the Ferocious Beast, Fairly Oddparents, and a few others. It was really cool. It's painted over now, since they are older, but we can still go in there and see outlines of some of the different characters.

I will try to find pics and post them later.

Has anyone painted their kitchen countertops before? My house was bought through a program. It was a forclosure, (someone's lost, my gain) so they redid EVERYTHING, and they put this ugly seafoam green countertops in the kitchen.. It must be what was donated to them or must have been the cheapest at the warehouse. Its also in the bathrooms...I cant complain though. This 4br/2ba is cheaper than my 1bdrm apt.. so I will live with the ugly.. lol
if your countertops are not that big and you are very handy or know somebody very handy, you may be able to replace them very cheaply and start new. my bff is moving her pharmacy and to save hundreds if not thousands, they bought the materials from home depot and lowes to build the cashwrap and reused fixtures.

she got nice black slate-looking supposedly remnant formica countertops at home depot. i think it was more like discontinued b/c they had all matching pieces. the 8ft (i think) sections were less than 25.00 and the 6ft straight and angle cut sections were less than 20.00. supposedly they were originally around 80.00 so 75% off.

just need to be very handy w/ a circular saw, reciprocating saw to cut the sink hole, and drill to screw the countertops down. and probably buy new woven ss hookups to put your sink back in but that's very cheap.

i'm sure there are videos on youtube you can watch to see how it's all done.

or you can buy sheet formica and glue it down over the existing countertop. you will need to be very good at measuring and cutting. as long as you don't have straight edges, not bullnose edges. they may even sell the edge strips precut. when i worked in retail, we could order the side strips for the tables when they got chipped. until they changed the color scheme and put wood strips around all the tables. then we had to order modular sections to replace the broken parts b/c you couldn't just repair them anymore.

If you are going over the old stain/paint with black you do not need to necessarily sand them all the way down, but youneed to at least light sand them to scour the surface so the new paint will adhere, hth!

yes, depends on the original finish you are painting over. if the surface is very smooth like shellac or varnish, need to rough it up w/ sandpaper. if they are painted you could probably do primer tinted black and paint. they may even have primer/paint together now.

When I bought it unfinished like 6 years ago i stained it and then put Polyurethane on it but since then most of it has come off ( I think) there is no shine to them anymore so thats what makes me think it has worn off some what.
