Landers may need a new car

18,933 670 October 3, 2010 at 01:53 PM in Autos
I really didn't want to purchase a new vehicle, but the fact that my car may cost me about 1/2 or more than the value of it to repair and I own it outright, I may end up j ust buying a new one.

I'm looking used, but not opposed to new if the price is only a little bit more than what it would cost for used.

I'm looking to try to stay in 7-10k range, but could go a little more if the car was newer and the cost was only a couple thousand more and I could keep my monthly payments reasonable.

I'm looking at maybe Mazda 3 or similar. I'd like a Sedan, but am open to a small SUV. I don't want a coupe since i carry my hockey gear with me a lot and transporting that in a smaller coupe is inconvenient.

Any suggestions on vehicles to look at?

I did think about the Sonata. Definitely one I'll be looking into. Hyundai's quality has definitely improved in recent years.

Honda Fit.. meh. Not exactly my style.
I was going to recommend a post 2006 Sonata. I think they are just about the best bargain going (hockey sticks need to go next to the passenger seat door, but that's OK by me.) If you ever return to the Promised Land you'd find that they are suprisingly good in the snow too.

It really depends on what happens with my car being diagnosed tomorrow. If it's more than 50% the value, I'm going to trade in it and will likely do so within 2 weeks. Obviously if it's fixable for like $500 or so, I'll just be doing that.

Yeah. I need to get it inspected already and if it's going to cost too much to repair it's just diminishing returns.. I mean, $1000 now to fix, who knows what it'll be 5 months from now. ya know? Better to buy a car that's better as it is now.

Yeah. I figure if I can get 2500 in trade for it and throw 1500 in cash as a downpayment, that'll help bring the total down I'm borrowing on and help keep the payments on the lower end.

Have you taken into account the TOTAL amount of the finance charges over time and compared them to the cost of repairing your car? And the additional insurance for what might be a different class car and the higher excise tax and t... you get the idea?

You really want to buy someone else's problem... that is a car that they didn't want!

Yeah. I'm taking the total cost of ownership on a different car.

Keep in mind, I'm looking for a later model car. Something with less issues than my car has now. It's possible the exhaust and other repair work on my car will be around 1500. I'd rather buy a new car and make payments on something I won't be fixing every single month.

can look at a new mazda 2 (nissan versa, honda fit, ford fiesta even though it's a little bit more for hatchback, toyota yaris)? Hatchback so they can hold a lot, and with trade-in you can get them new for around 10k.

Personally I'd rather go for a new car over a used if possible.

Yeah, I don't like the Mazda 2. Not a hatchback fan at all. If I'm gonna be driving the same car for the next 5+ years, I don't want something that I don't like.

Not going to be in my price range for a later model, unfortunately.

Yeah I hear ya about hatchbacks... some of those also have coupes but since they're all subcompact gear may be a tight fit. My ex had one of the first revisions of the Mazda 3, and my current gf has one of the new ones... I like them, don't think you'd be disappointed. I have a civic and I like it, the 4dr's have a decent amount of room.

Think he's open to either as long as it's within his price range and he can find what he likes
