But most of what people know about the turtles is nothing of what the original comics were. It had it's own established story/characters years before TV/media/toy lines picked up on it.
The original Eastman and Laird version was closer to Watchmen or Kick-Ass in terms of grit and content, and not the breakfast cereal friendly "cowabunga" shouting cartoon version.
