Depends on the relationship and the people involved.

I have been considering this same question.

In college I dated a guy for almost 5 years. We never got married and he never bought a ring/proposed even though we discussed marriage at length. Then I dated another guy for a little longer than a year.

At some point just before I turned 30 I came to the conclusion that if I dated a guy for a year and he hadn't asked me to marry him; he wasn't going to.

I dated my ex-husband for 9 months before he proposed. He was aware of my one year assertion.

We have been split up for more than 6 years now and he proposed to his new fiance after dating her a little more than 2 years.

My current BF and I have dated on two seperate "instances" for lack of a better word. I'm unsure if I should consider one year in total time dating. Or if it should be one continuous year.

It's crazy because some people can be together 2 weeks and get married and live together their whole life. Some live their whole life together and after 2 weeks the marriage is over.

I said when the time is right.

My wife and I were dating just over 3 years before getting married.

This is crazy talk. What is the rush? I would wait until I have lived with them for a couple of years and dated a few years prior to that. Will you seriously dump your bf if it turns out you have dated for 13 months?EEK!

No offense, but don't you think it's a little restrictive to put a mandated time period on that sort of thing? Especially for only one year. That's a REALLY short period of time to know someone before deciding to commit to them for the rest of your life. Shouldn't every situation be decided based on the specific circumstances? What if you're with a guy who would propose given enough time to feel comfortable but you bail out of the relationship after a year because of your artificial time limit?

Go get a 1 gallon bottle:
1. every time you have sex with her, put a quarter in it.
2. everytime you have a fight with her, take out 3 dollars.
when the bottle is full, it is time...
