Of course, you're probably one to sue Kraft because the time listed on the box says 30 minutes but it took you 40. Had you had everything set up beforehand and had experience, you could have done it in 30, or maybe even 25

My friend went in a few weeks ago with her Jetta for an oil change at the dealer, they recommended a 40k maintenance, wound up paying $500 for plugs, all filters, and an oil change. OUCH! She should have called me for my opinion, all she really needed was an oil change, I would have changed her plugs for the $50 in parts and sexytime for labor.

The flat rate system was developed to help the mechanic AND the consumer. It doesnt matter if you go to a master mechanic, or one that works slower, you will pay the SAME amount of time. Different shops have different labor rates, but in the end, this system protects the consumer from mechanics who work slowly and rack up extra hours. A lot of repairs arent done all at once since they may have to wait for parts, or additional parts, or wait for you to answer your phone to approve the extra repairs that are needed! A few minutes here, 20 minutes there, adding it all up would consume too much time, and you certainly would NOT want to be billed for the entire time your car is on the lift. A repair may get started today, but the part may be delayed a day, your car goes to the parking lot until them.

The rates also take into account the fact that there could be rounded, broken, or stuck bolts that take extra time to remove and repair. If you live up North, flat rates probably save you a ton of money since its on the mechanic to get rusty bolts loose.

Oynot, you obviously cant comprehend what we've all told you. Look at it this way, if your boss gives you an assignment that will take the entire week (40 hours), and you do it by noon Friday (35 hours), should he kick you out of the office and dock you 5 hours pay? Or would you rather take a long lunch and surf the net before leaving early? Or maybe even get a head start on next week's assignment? Also, if you were flat rate and screwed up, you'd work the next week for FREE! Get it done right, get it done fast, everybody wins.

I'm the family mechanic at our house, 5 cars total and most are higher mileage, if you can do your work (except for internal engine and auto trans) car repairs are actually pretty darn cheap

You know so little for being a Noob, would a male have an avatar like mine, and you still have not gotten down the FLAT RATE SYSTEM.

Now if you work Salary at a smaller shop, then you work just as hard, as time is money, and money is time. Technicians with less experience get paid less money; Technicians whom are ASE Certified in all categories make the most money, because they are experts in their field, and the best at diagnostics, and worth every dollar they are paid. Do not think that the boss does not come down hard on them, when a problem develops, or there is a "come back". Again, you have not a clue about how the automotive repair business is "run".

But explaining to a man/and or woman as the case may be with the brain of a pea, is near impossible as to this entire situation - simply because YOU think you know it all.

It has been explained in various ways to you the way it works, but you refuse to understand, which indicates the size of your brain and/or the way the synapse connect inside your brain, which must be short circuiting - and I'll go with that one Might you see a doctor for some medication, because it appears you have no logical thinking in this thread.

You should be ashamed of yourself for goofing off at work, and leaving early and padding your time sheet and getting paid for it. That would not happen at a Shop where most clock in and clock out, and fill out paperwork on the vehicles they work on, as to the time they receive said vehicle and turn said vehicle around.
