For one thing, I don't like used cars. While they aren't always the best value, I don't like the trouble that can come with used cars.

New cars are also safer for a variety of reasons. Despite vehicle history reporting services, you still never know the history of a used car for sure. It's nearly impossible to know if a used car really has working airbags or has ever had damage that impacts safety. Side-impact airbags can be hard to find on a used car. Many new cars have side-impact airbags standard or at least as an option. Side-impact airbags can and do prevent splattered brains. I wouldn't put my kid in a car without them. It is also easier to get stability control on a new car, and all new cars have TPMS. Some of these things can mean the difference between being dead and walking away from a bad situation or avoiding it altogether.

Many kids will be encouraged to drive more safely in a new car. The last thing they want to do is damage a brand new car.
Well...when Mal is defining a "new car", she means brand new, right off the lot, never been used. You can still buy a couple year old "used" car with all those features. A new, new car for a teenager though is a horrible investment on it's own.

My first car was new, and I was a lot more careful with it than I would have been with a used one. I never sped and generally drove like a grandma because I was so paranoid about something happening to it.

Iagree

He'll pay through the nose for insurance, too. We have one client that bought a brand new mustang for his 16 year old son... within two years, the kid racked up 4 speeding tickets driving it, his insurance more than doubled to over $3,000 every six months. LMAO

I wouldn't even buy my teenagers a used clunker. I had to buy my own cars and learned to treat them well. They can learn the same lesson. Plus, I can't afford all those car payments. I have four kids Roll If I do for one I will have to do for all. No way!

More importantly, I don't wanna share the roads with my teenager. If he can't even stay in the line of the toilet without pissing all over, what makes me think he'll stay in the lines on the road? He's easily distracted.

But your kid may not be like you - I can't count the number of idiot friends my brother had in high school that would get a brand new car for their birthday and would pick him up and be like "get in! I'll show ya how fast this thing goes." Faint

When I was 18 a friend of mine worked as a detailer at a local GM dealership. He talked his boss into hiring him and four of us to drive new cars about 20 miles to a car show at the air force base and then back again after the show was over.

What a dumbass laugh out loud

We raced each other all the way there and back and beat the living fark right out of those brand new cars.

Well then you're the rare individual. I'm still in my "teens" and I know I would never do that to my children. I still have my POS used car. Would I like a new car? Yes. But I do not have the income for it now. Maybe down the road in a little while Big Grin

I think giving your child a new vehicle is just setting them up for a "entitlement" babying type situation where you'll always be depending on your parents on everything. You don't get the responsibility or the hard work involved to say "Wow, I bought this car, all on my own."

Would you have done that if the car belonged to you? If so, all I can say is I hope I don't end up with a kid like that, or I might have to reconsider buying a new car.
