Definitely.

I didn't buy my first car until I had a full-time job and I was well out of high school.
My first experience with financing my own transportation was, not surprisingly, bicycles. My parents never bought me a new bike so I learned to build what I wanted myself. By scrounging through the scrap piles at the dump and scrounging up parts from garage sales and saving my money to buy some new stuff I eventually ended up with higher quality bicycles than you could get anywhere but at high-end bicycle shops. By the time I was in high school I had quite a collection and sold a few of them to get the $350 I spent on my first vehicle--a 1967 4x4 Wagoneer (Actually still being built by Kaiser and not Jeep at that time).

That was the only vehicle I had in high school and I got that late in my Junior year.

Guess they better keep their butt out of the shady parts of town. They must have hookers in safer areas, right Wink
Sure, hookers are readily available everywhere in my area. Unfortunately, you can't avoid shady areas when they are between points A and B.

While I applaud your ability to do that for yourself, if a parent is in a comfortable position where they can afford a vehicle for their children to safely get around in, I don't see where the issue is (I'm not telling you to go buy them a Bugatti Veyron off the lot)

I would probably agree. A good used car as a first car is a excellent choice.
I purchased my first car for $1200 with a dead motor from my brother Roll My parents helped me pay for the new motor but I had to pay them $50 per month (which seemed like a lot at the time.) I treated that car like my baby......duct taped car door handle an all! I felt proud that I was able to purchase something so 'expensive.' I have worked hard to be able to keep upgrading over the years. I can't imagine the lessons that would be lost had I not had to work for the things I have

I agree with most. I would instead just buy a limo and hire a chauffer. that way, Muffins won't be late to our sunday brunch at our malibu country club with our friend Fifi

I had a client one time at the shop waiting for his Escalade to finish up and he was telling me a story about where he works. He is a teacher in a really rich suburb here in the Bay. On his first day, he was walking to the classroom when a Bentley drives by and a high school kid jumps out of the back. That kid was in his class and the teacher asked him if that was his Bentley. The kid responded yes, but he wasn't allowed to drive it until he was 18. Until then, his parents hired a chauffer. laugh out loud

laugh out loud here in SoCal, there's a private HS called Oaks Christian... Will Smith, Joe Montana's kids go there... they're considered the poor kids Whee

The teacher/staff parking lot and the student parking lots tell a very similar story
