Oh, that context sheds a whole new light on Muffins too. You learn something new every day. I learned that from June Allyson. I wouldn't mind getting a date with her either.

Ok.....goodnight. I'm off to bed to ponder how I was ripped off in life because I wasn't given a new car at 16. Just to show my emotional scars.....I'm passing this anger onto my children by not buying them a new OR a used car. That'll show them!

Is there any other way? I like sleeping naked in my sleeping bag. I never tell people that when they borrow it though. Is that wrong?

How does that show ignorance about cars? You really won't get much of a car (much less a safe one) for $1,000. This isn't 1980, which is probably about the last time you could get a remotely good car for $1,000.
I decided to go to college back in 1992. I had to commute 25 miles each way every day so I knew I would need a fairly dependable car. The summer before I started college I bought a 1982 Chevrolet Celebrity for $300. I put two new tires on it and a new muffler and drove it back and forth to school from September '92 until January of '97 without any trouble. It was still running absolutely great at that time but the rear suspension rusted out and broke loose from the unibody. I patched it up and welded it back together but it was too far gone to feel safe so I parked it.

I don't think I could call a 1982 Chevrolet Celebrity a good car with a straight face (no offense), but I'd say you got a good deal for what it was.

That's how most people screw up as far as cars go though. They focus more on the image and what other people think rather than what is actually going to be best for what they need.

I don't care about what other people think, but I do care about how much I like the car. I think a good car posses at least three important qualities: beauty, power, and safety. Driving a fun car can turn a long and boring commute into an enjoyable experience you look forward to. That's worth a lot to me. A car is more than a utilitarian contraption for getting from point A to B for me. It's a piece of art and engineering.

I agree with that. But I was always smart and responsible enough to know when I wasn't financially able to have everything I wanted in a car. At those times the reliability and cost were the most important factors. Hell, I have owned a '78 Plymouth Horizon and an '82 Ford Granada. Both four-doors laugh out loud

I get it. If you can't afford everything you want in a car, you still need something that can get you from point A to B. I was just pointing out that there's nothing wrong with buying a car you enjoy if you can afford it.

I couldn't vote as I didn't see an option that fit me.

But I would NEVER buy a newly licensed teen a brand new car. I remember what I did to my dad's car as a teen. That shit is not happening to me. laugh out loud

No kids yet for me so I'm not quite sure how we'd handle it when the time arrives but I imagine I'd make him/her save up on their own and I'd meet them halfway for nice used car in good condition.

If I could afford it easily? Sure I would. I wouldn't buy them a sports or luxury car, but I'd buy them a safe compact or midsized car with good reviews.

Most people can't afford a car easily, including myself, so I'd probably look at something 3-5 years old that's safe and that I could still get a warranty on, like a certified pre-owned.

Wow, the car I learned to drive on was an '86 Celebrity that my dad bought for $500 in '01. I drove it maybe a half-dozen times before we sold it to my cousin (who wrecked it) and got a Camry. It was a good car though.

I would insist on getting my kid a new car.

For one thing, I don't like used cars. While they aren't always the best value, I don't like the trouble that can come with used cars.

New cars are also safer for a variety of reasons. Despite vehicle history reporting services, you still never know the history of a used car for sure. It's nearly impossible to know if a used car really has working airbags or has ever had damage that impacts safety. Side-impact airbags can be hard to find on a used car. Many new cars have side-impact airbags standard or at least as an option. Side-impact airbags can and do prevent splattered brains. I wouldn't put my kid in a car without them. It is also easier to get stability control on a new car, and all new cars have TPMS. Some of these things can mean the difference between being dead and walking away from a bad situation or avoiding it altogether.

Many kids will be encouraged to drive more safely in a new car. The last thing they want to do is damage a brand new car.
Ahahahahahaha!

You're thinking kids with a superman complex will drive safer just because they dont want to wreck the new car??? Did you ever go to high school in America? Kids with nice cars wreck them more than kids with older cars, inexperience plus bigger engines usually equals disaster.

Side-impact air bags? I'm a car nut and have been in a ton of junkyards, the odds of side impacts are incredibly low, and on most of the cars I've seen t-boned, the side airbags wouldnt have done a lick of good. vomit

TPMS? Are you serious??? Give them kid a $3 pressure gauge and teach them how to check the air! It takes a few minutes to check all the tires. Taking a look at both sides of the car once a day is a more reliable TPMS. Big Grin
