Make sure that people can be able to READ THE farkING TEXT WITHOUT HAVING TO HIGHLIGHT IT.
And try to limit the size of the page (ex: leave the picture and videos on the main page to a minimum, don't make stuff huge.)
Lastly, don't include so much crap that it takes a long time to load for people with dial-up, but f you do the previous you should be fine.

I don't give a care anymore. If you put weird ass backgrounds, or heavly edit html/css and think you have really cool layout ... I just go to View -> Page Style -> No Style (In Firefox).
Now all myspace pages look the same.
