This involves a new diamond, settings, the whole deal. I got a price for her existing set. What is the rule of thumb in regards to spending on this type of item? I know that the 2 months salary rule is common for engagement rings. Are there any guidelines for upgrades? Thanks in advance.
But that's jmo.
Happy Birthday, thismom4deals!

My DH got me a nice, engagement ring that I loved, and I didn't care if it was 2 months salary.
That being said, I am different I guess because I don't want "new" rings.. My original engagement diamond is very sentimental to me. My DH has given me new band to go with it over the years.. At our first anniversary, we were pretty broke, but my DH got me a new band that had a few diamond chips
I say it is all about what you/your wife like that matters, not about cost..
Although, if I did want a new wedding ring set, I would totally flip if my DH spend 2 months salary on it
Just find something that you think she would really like, and I don't think most women would even expect it to cost a "certain" amount..
But, that is just my opinion

how many months of emotion did you spend on it? that's what i'd care about.
a friend of mine got engaged to a police cadet. he was making a meager salary at the time. but he spent months learning her jewelry tastes, then went to a store and designed an engagement/wedding ring for her. it's a heart of gold, shaped flat like a lily pad almost, and where the lily would emerge out of the pad, just like that where the tops of the heart meat at the inside v, there is a small diamond. now the diamond is really very small, like an accent diamond. By marketing standards it would not be a wedding ring diamond. but really that was all the ring needed, because it spoke volumes about his emotion.
she loved it. and we all thought it was very special because no one else in the world has that wedding ring.
it's a very sweet idea to upgrade the ring and let her know how much she/the marriage mean to you. but don't let any salesman tell you that you have to spend $$$ to do that. there are myriad ways to let a loved one know how important they are to you. and certainly other things one could buy if buying is the point. but you can do all of that without the falsehoods in sales pitches.
good luck!
Apparently they outsource these calls as well. What a crock.
Arack: I think in this situation, it's the thought that counts. Just you being proactive and actually thinking of upgrading on your own would be enough to me. I wouldn't worry about the "rule."
I was thinking of asking for a new iPod for Christmas, my last one was stolen when my apartment was burglarized in NYC. It was the 1G
Hmmm so many things that I want for myself this year. I am way too stingy when it comes to splurging on myself so I think I will allow DH to spoil me a little
Ohs! is seriously the best cereal.

TheGhost has a good point about the head phones. The kids around here prefer the traditional old school style head phones, no ear buds. We also have the little folding speaker systems *cough Target after Christmas 75% clearance cough* and now the girls have iPod/ cd players in their rooms.
Dracula's Kiss creates two layers: the bottom is red with grenadine and the top is black with cola. Add spiders to the drink or hang them on the glass for a ghoulish finishing touch.
Ingredients:
•1 oz black cherry vodka
•1/2 oz grenadine
•cola
•maraschino cherries for garnish
Preparation:
1.Coat the bottom of a highball glass with grenadine.
2.Add ice and vodka.
3.Fill with cola.
4.Garnish with cherries.

Now, my other concern is what I have bolded -- does this mean a trade-in value? That you are planning to sell or trade in her current set? If that's the case, I strongly -- let me restate that -- STRONGLY suggest that you don't trade, sell or otherwise get rid of her wedding rings. You may not see another anniversary.
28 years and I still have my original plain wedding band. I'll die with that ring. Now, since then a diamond solitaire has been added and after that an anniversary band but the original wedding ring is still in place.
I'm sure you know your wife far better than we can guess at, but are you sure she even wants new ones?
Even though I'm well paid, I've never understood spending the money all on myself. I did buy myself a La-Z-Boy sofa last year for Christmas, and gas logs for the house 3 years ago.
I'm very generous to the Brother and SIL though (and their 8 kids).

I agree with everyone else add do not replace....and spend what you can afford and or work into the budget.

Like cathi wrote, we all have our own interests. Wouldn't life be boring if everyone were the same?
