I need some honest female opinions. I am planning on upgrading my wife's wedding ring for Christmas.

This involves a new diamond, settings, the whole deal. I got a price for her existing set. What is the rule of thumb in regards to spending on this type of item? I know that the 2 months salary rule is common for engagement rings. Are there any guidelines for upgrades? Thanks in advance.
I think that is a sweet idea but I don't believe in the salary to ring price equation. I think it's a scam by the diamond industry to support their continued stronghold over the diamond mines.

But that's jmo. laugh out loud We upgraded our rings a few years ago when dh's wedding band broke and there was no way I could justify spending 2 months salary on a ring at any time.

Happy Birthday, thismom4deals!

I don't think there is a "rule", IMO.. Of course, when we got engaged 21 years ago, there was no engagement ring rule then, or if there was, we didn't follow it.
My DH got me a nice, engagement ring that I loved, and I didn't care if it was 2 months salary.

That being said, I am different I guess because I don't want "new" rings.. My original engagement diamond is very sentimental to me. My DH has given me new band to go with it over the years.. At our first anniversary, we were pretty broke, but my DH got me a new band that had a few diamond chips laugh out loud to replace my exisitng plain band.. and then for my 5th anniversary he got me a nice diamond anniversary band that we had joined with the old set.

I say it is all about what you/your wife like that matters, not about cost..
Although, if I did want a new wedding ring set, I would totally flip if my DH spend 2 months salary on itOMG That would be a ton of money for something like that, and I guess I am too cheap laugh out loud

Just find something that you think she would really like, and I don't think most women would even expect it to cost a "certain" amount..

But, that is just my opinionCool

as a woman, my guideline for the upgrade:
how many months of emotion did you spend on it? that's what i'd care about.

a friend of mine got engaged to a police cadet. he was making a meager salary at the time. but he spent months learning her jewelry tastes, then went to a store and designed an engagement/wedding ring for her. it's a heart of gold, shaped flat like a lily pad almost, and where the lily would emerge out of the pad, just like that where the tops of the heart meat at the inside v, there is a small diamond. now the diamond is really very small, like an accent diamond. By marketing standards it would not be a wedding ring diamond. but really that was all the ring needed, because it spoke volumes about his emotion.

she loved it. and we all thought it was very special because no one else in the world has that wedding ring.

it's a very sweet idea to upgrade the ring and let her know how much she/the marriage mean to you. but don't let any salesman tell you that you have to spend $$$ to do that. there are myriad ways to let a loved one know how important they are to you. and certainly other things one could buy if buying is the point. but you can do all of that without the falsehoods in sales pitches.

good luck!

Good lordie. I need verification of my work and termination with Target and I've been jumping through hoops to get it.

Apparently they outsource these calls as well. What a crock.

Happy Birthday TM4D! Hope it is/was a great day and a great year! Smilie

Arack: I think in this situation, it's the thought that counts. Just you being proactive and actually thinking of upgrading on your own would be enough to me. I wouldn't worry about the "rule."

I was thinking of asking for a new iPod for Christmas, my last one was stolen when my apartment was burglarized in NYC. It was the 1G laugh out loud

Hmmm so many things that I want for myself this year. I am way too stingy when it comes to splurging on myself so I think I will allow DH to spoil me a little Coverlaugh

Ohs! is seriously the best cereal. yummy I think it would be the one food I couldn't live without on a deserted island! laugh out loud

So this ebay seller delayed in shipping me some coupons and I didn't get them until after the sale and after the coupon expired. To compensate, the seller sent me a HUGE priority envelope full of coupons, some of them really good, but they were ALL EXPIRED too! Should I just let it go? Annoyed

That's what the girls got last year, iPod Nano. This year, netbooks. The rationale (and agreement) is that they also have to do some creative writing during the non-school work hours.

TheGhost has a good point about the head phones. The kids around here prefer the traditional old school style head phones, no ear buds. We also have the little folding speaker systems *cough Target after Christmas 75% clearance cough* and now the girls have iPod/ cd players in their rooms.
We got those little folding speakers as well! they were great for 90% off!!

With all the talk of food and drink, thought I'd post this recipe in advance of Halloween. [I don't drink vodka, but it sounds good!]

Dracula's Kiss creates two layers: the bottom is red with grenadine and the top is black with cola. Add spiders to the drink or hang them on the glass for a ghoulish finishing touch.

Ingredients:
•1 oz black cherry vodka
•1/2 oz grenadine
•cola
•maraschino cherries for garnish

Preparation:
1.Coat the bottom of a highball glass with grenadine.
2.Add ice and vodka.
3.Fill with cola.
4.Garnish with cherries.
Thrift-worthy Vodkaberry cocktail!!! I just printed this out. We are going to a Halloween party Sat. night and I have to bring a dish.....I think I'll bring glasses instead Evil

That sucks. Let them know what happened and see if they'll resend a batch of unexpired coupons or refund. Stupey coupon sellers sometimes....Annoyed

I wouldn't let it go. Who is the seller (curious as I don't want to use this person). I would tell this person that you can't use expired coupons, didn't order expired coupons and don't want replacement expired coupons. If they don't offer a good remedy...I will throttle them for you!

I agree with the other ladies -- if my husband spent two months income on anything, I would not be happy. No guidelines, what you can comfortably, easily afford.

Now, my other concern is what I have bolded -- does this mean a trade-in value? That you are planning to sell or trade in her current set? If that's the case, I strongly -- let me restate that -- STRONGLY suggest that you don't trade, sell or otherwise get rid of her wedding rings. You may not see another anniversary.

28 years and I still have my original plain wedding band. I'll die with that ring. Now, since then a diamond solitaire has been added and after that an anniversary band but the original wedding ring is still in place.

I'm sure you know your wife far better than we can guess at, but are you sure she even wants new ones?

I guess I'll go Hide as I have no TV that has ANY inputs besides a cable input (I have a plan to remedy that), no DVD, no TiVo, a cell phone that only calls and texts (I haven't mastered that), no Ipod, no MP3 player, no laptop, no iPad.

Even though I'm well paid, I've never understood spending the money all on myself. I did buy myself a La-Z-Boy sofa last year for Christmas, and gas logs for the house 3 years ago.
I'm very generous to the Brother and SIL though (and their 8 kids).

Who came up this arbitrary 2 month guide line rule ...and why do we follow this silly rule ????

I agree with everyone else add do not replace....and spend what you can afford and or work into the budget.

Iagree Nothing in my life wants to keep up with the Joneses (or Jones's, or Jones'). Except for three shirts, some bras, panties and socks, I haven't bought clothing for me in over 4 years.

I love my phone but have no interest in owning an ipod or mp3 player of any kind. I find the Tivo service to be more annoying than anything else (because dh and my older ds constantly think they have to pause every single stupid show to walk 10 ft to the kitchen to get a drink).

Like cathi wrote, we all have our own interests. Wouldn't life be boring if everyone were the same? Big Grin
