Hi Dreeme! That sounds horrible...hug I'm a nurse, but I'm also a mom and I know how nerve-wracking that can be. Sometimes it's just best to go with your instincts. If you don't feel comfortable waiting out the night, I would go. How often are you rotating the Tylenol and Motrin? Is she eating/drinking anything? I would say if the fever hasn't broke, especially by tomorrow morning it's best to get her in.
Wave Think there are several of us nurses around here now. What kind of nursing do you do?

She is eating (a little) and drinking (a lot) so I don't think she's getting dehydrated. She's had her cup steadily refilled all day. When her temp drops to the 102 range she gets up and plays or acts half normal but it only lasts for about 2 hours. We are rotating tylenol and motrin every 4 hours.

okay peoples. Ambree (she's almost 3) got a fever last night of 105. We gave her Motrin and it went down to 102.
My daughter used to spike high temps too. I feel for ya, it's scary. Bathing her often worked. I made regular temp bath water -- nice and warm. (hang on, don't freak) Then put her in and turned the cold water on to just a trickle so that it slowly cooled the water -- and her. Nine times out of ten, it worked. But by slowly lowering the water temp there was no screaming or freezing. If she wasn't too terribly sick she would play and not even really notice it cooling. I usually washed her hair too (while the water was still warm). Worse case, you have a clean kid to take to the hospital.

Smilie Oh good! I did Assisted Living when I first got out of school. Then had DD#2 and took a break. Then worked in Clinical Research which I loved heart Then got pregnant with DD#3 and after I had her, I decided to not go back for the time being. Makes it hard to work with 3 little ones, and I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to work. I do miss it though. Keeping my license active so that if I get the urge to go back I can Stick Out Tongue

Okay.. I am sometimes not in the majority because I am not a fan of taking kids to the doctor every time they run a fever. I too am a nurse, and know that way too many people run to the doctor for every little thing. I know that a fever is not a disease, but rather a symptom that your body is fighting something. MY MIL freaks out cause I let most things go for a few days. My guess with that high of a fever is that it is a virus, which will need to just run it's course probably.. However, IMO, 105 is a pretty high fever.. I can't say that any of mine ever ran temps that high, and you do run the risk of febrile seizures when their temp gets too high. Some kids do run higher temps than others and one of mine is known to run 103-104 temps every time he gets sick.

If she has had one that high for over 24 hours straight, I would probably take her to be seen.. If it were only 101 or so, I would probably ride it out another day, but with it being that high, it is hard to do nothing..

Make sure you are alternating the motrin/tylenol to keep something in her system and push fluids as much as possible. That high of a fever will cause her to dehydrate much more quickly.

I do understand your concern with the ER.. there are alot of germs there, but maybe you can keep her in a more secluded area away from alot of the other people waiting.. or you could go to the urgent care, but the ones here I know close at 9 or 10 pm.

I am sorry she is sick.. I know it is a sucky time for you right now.. hughug
nod Well said. I wholeheartedly agree.

Sounds like you have done some different things.. I had a friend who did clinical research a few years ago and loved it too..
let's see, I have done almost everything it seems.. Next year will be 20 years in nursing for me OMG can't believe it, I feel old.. Started out in ICU for a few years, went and worked a med surg/telemetry unit for 6 years and then did a brief 1 year as night shift coordinator on that floor (hated that job Frown) , left there and did 6 years or so in OB/GYN (loved postpartum, newborn nursery, and neonatal ICU, but hated labor and delivery).. left cause it got boring.. went back to critical care for a few years.. and now I am working in surgery department as a recovery room nurse.. I heart it.. best nursing I have ever done.. Wish, I would have listened to a friend and done it years ago.. Another perk is that my boss is a long time friend who actually trained me fresh out of nursing school..

Many years ago, I worked full time.. After child #2, I worked weekends only for a few years, and then with #3, I went prn. I took 6 months off after #4, and then went back.. Still working prn now.. Usually work about 12 hours a week.. Enough to pay my car payment and a few other things.. Wish I didn't have to work,, but with 1 in college and another one graduating next year, I think that isn't gonna be a reality for awhileWink

okay peoples. Ambree (she's almost 3) got a fever last night of 105. We gave her Motrin and it went down to 102. Then 3 hours later it was back up to 105. We've been rotating tylenol and motrin for over 24 hours now and it won't go below 102. It's at 105 a majority of the time. She doesn't have a primary doctor so our only option really is an urgent care clinic or the ER. (last option because, quite frankly, I'm sick of the ER) She has no symptoms though. No puking, no cough, no runny nose..nothing. I ask her what hurts but she says nothing in particular hurts. No rash. I just don't know how long is long enough before we need to just take her in.

I worry about the ER also because she's obviously fighting off something and I don't want her picking up more germs by being around more sick people. Ugh.
dreeme, as someone mentioned, some kids tend to get high fevers. i was one of those. the highest i got was 106.5... and for several days. that was dangerous. 105 is up there, but it is not unusual in little kids.

the thing that always worked for all of us: cold compresses. take a bowl of cool water... cooler than room temperature, but not icy cold, because she's so warm that cool will seem much colder to her already. you can add a little perfume or cologne to the water if you like... the smell is often soothing.

and then using a thin cloth... like a cheesecloth or kerchiefs or a washcloth, soak completely in water, wring out and lay the cloth doubled and flat on her forehead. the key is to keep the head cooled so as not to impact the brain. so do the compresses for about 10 minutes, then give it a half hour break, fresh water for 10 min compresses again. and so forth.
it makes a big difference.

another thing... if you guys have any pedialyte pops at home, or can get some tonight... those would be good. the electrolytes and water will help her body and sucking on those will also cool her down some.

and one thing you want to watch for (harder to tell cos she's 3, easier to decipher in older kids, but still): if you start to see any signs of delirium, basically her saying strange things that don't make sense, or talking disjointed stuff in her feverish state, then you want to get her to urgent care quickly. or if her fever goes above 105 you might want to do that, too.

dia... i am far from ready. tree/decorations not up (was supposed to be this weekend, but didn't get to it). house not cleaned up. present shopping not even begun. EEK! cards not sent out.

i.am.not.ready.

but, let's focus on sweet things Big Grin

here is a page with links to substitutions for alcohol in cooking [about.com]... i like the idea of reduced orange juice (to intensify the sugared flavor, maybe even caramelize the sugar some) and also ank's idea of orange rind. mix the two and you would have intensity.

here [about.com] is a page with info on how much alcohol remains and links to calculation chart by the USDA.

but i had another completely non-alcoholic idea. how about using rum flavoring? dr oetker makes one that doesn't have a bunch of junk. i'm sure you can find others, that are completely alcohol free and offer just flavoring. my recipe calls for rum, and i know there are other buche recipes that call for brandy or rum, so you wouldn't be that far off base. maybe taste and see how you like the flavoring? mum used to make buche de noel for us when we were kids (LOVE it) and she always just used rum flavoring because we were going to eat it.

another idea, if you get some dark brown sugar, and get some sour oranges. mix the juice with the sugar and cook till reduced. you would have the smoky caramelized flavor of the brown sugar and the sharpness of the tart juice, plus that orange flavor. that might do the trick.

i think before you make the cake, it might be worth it to test out a couple of orange concoctions on the stovetop and then taste-test them before getting going on the cake.

hug
and just want to say, i think it is so sweet (so characteristically what i see of you in so many posts) of you to do this for your dad and put in such loving attention to every detail. he is lucky to have you and you him. i pray for speedy health for him and for you all to have a wonderful, laughter and love filled christmas together.

hug

i am finally done with laundry... for the night. Faint
back to the washer dryer bright and early to wash and dry the rest of the bedding, dry out the rugs and towels that are still damp (i just don't have it in me to finish up the drying anymore), wash and dry all the darks.
oh and did i mention everything still needs to be folded and put away. nod

not doing that right now. laundering all the bedding is way too much work. i want a housekeeper.

Well, ambree woke up at 2:30 with a fever of 106.3 so off to the ER we went after dosing her with tylenol. At the ER it went down to 103 and before we left 99.9. She has a UTI. Poor thing. They put her on augmentin.

Ank: The ready to feed bottles are $5.99 and go on sale often for $5.49. The ready to go packs are $10.19 and the smallest canister is $13.xx.

L2B: I am in awe of you. I knew you were an amazing woman, but there is NO way I could pull off 4 kids, homeschooling them, and working as a nurse. I would never get to sleep! worship

Still fighting this nasty sinus infection. I feel like I got hit by a truck. I feel bad because I sent both boys to school this morning, but honestly, I knew it was going to be a day where I stuck them in front of the TV all day so that I could rest. Hopefully I will find the energy to pack up their closets while they are away.

I am still annoyed at DH for not doing T runs for me Saturday night. All I wanted was more Sonicare but I could not convince him to go through the line. I pouted for the rest of the night. Coverlaugh

Does anyone need Lego GCs? I have a couple extra and I also have some of the Boots Lip Gloss GCs if someone needs...I would highly recommend against using the lip gloss though. LMK.

I just want to add that I am having a horrible time trying to get my SS gift together. My matchup has been MIA for a while and I don't know the slightest thing about them...please, if you're reading this, log into elfster and answer some of my questions!! Big Grin
