The one I bought was a bargain book so the red stickered 5.99 price was the new "list" price. I used my 25% teacher's discount, which also comes off the list price, and the discount came off of the 5.99. Big Grin

My 11 yr old loves to watch Food Network. She knows the chefs' names by heart so I figured it was a good start for her. The cookbook is cute, lots of simple recipes and tips. Lots of pictures.

Yeah, Borders is big on inflating those prices. Ever check the prices of DVDs? shake head
teacher's discount... is that also a student discount/academic discount with university/school ID or does one need to be a teacher to get that, please? Big Grin

i'll see if I can make amazon swag dollars fast enough i might just get the book from there. running out of time here, and buying the hand blender ate into my christmas amazon gc stash. hahaa.

It's a cheesy little paper discount card that they give to teachers, whether public, private or homeschool. 25% off list price every day on books, 10% off on DVDs. No discount, that I know of, for toys. Like Lego. laugh out loud

I didn't realize more people didn't know about the teacher discount program. Can't be used with say, a 40% off coupon, but can be used with the 10% off for the Borders plus.

Okay, my mom has given me the task of finding a great deal for my niece and nephew for Christmas (good ol Aunt Katherine is giving them those travel Hungry Hungry Hippos and possibly a stash of Suave for the hell of it laugh out loud). Niece is 10 and nephew is 7. I was thinking something crafty, but I may have to wait and see what Kohl's has. Or do kids that age even like stuff like that any more? When I was 10, I still played with my American Girl dolls (okay, I'm 25 and I still have them...) and my niece wouldn't be caught dead with a doll.
Okay I have a GD that is 10.. I agree on the dolls, that's a no..

If you have Kohls coupons you can get lots for your niece.. okay I was going to say fuzzy slippers, gloves, but if you're in Florida you don't really need those things.. ha ha..

lots of kids jewelery marked down, earrings, necklaces, braclets, hair things, my GD loves the vanilla lotion, some cute clothes that are 80% off.. I've gotten all those things using the $5 coupon.. for free or cheap..

She loves craft things.. Target is good for that stuff.

Boy - no clue .. sorry.

Not my auction, just showing the cover of the cookbook I bought. When I searched the Borders site, only a hardback version for $35 came up. Amazon didn't have a pic, and in the Amazon market it's $19. I paid $4.50 ($5.99- 25% discount).

Those are some nice pots and pans, and funny, I put them in my cart to monitor too! They are $299 at Macy's site, just checked. I've never had stainless and would totally have to learn to cook again with these, but I could do it. The worst thing about getting new cookware for me is finding the room and rearranging everything to make it fit!

I just got my Crock Pot ready....going to try Chicken Taco meat in the crockpot tomorrow. The crock pot is about the only way I will cook raw meat laugh out loud Anyway, this one is super easy...put 1 lb. chicken in crock pot, dissolve 3 TBSP taco seasoning in 1 cup of chicken broth, pour over chicken and cook on low 6-8 hrs.

Doesn't get any easier than that! We love chicken tacos (and chicken quesadillas, etc.) so I am hoping this will be an easy way to do that.

All right, to bed for me....'night all!

PS - HAPPY BDAY TO TOOTSIE AND LAINA!!!!!
That's exactly how I often make my shredded chicken for tacos and other mexican dishes. I put mine on high in the crock pot and it's ready to fork shred in 4 hours. Your house will smell wonderful and the chicken is pretty good too!

Silly, ol Aunt Katherine. You don't give kids shampoo for Christmas. You give them rechargeable toothbrushes.

You remove your old pans from the cupboard and get rid of them. Thus freeing up space for your shiny new pans.

She's not fooling me at all. She might be headed to the hospital but first she is taking that coupon to Hallmark. Baby's First Christmas, New Baby, cute little pink stuffed animals (just ask Kallison)... Glad to hear they are doing well! Let the spoiling begin!

All this pan talk -- am I the only one left in the whole world that uses a pressure cooker? Best. Pan. Ever.

It's snowing. We are supposed to get another 3 - 5" "with some locally higher amounts". Oh, goody.

Hubby has some vacation that has to be used so he working half a day to today and taking the rest of the week off. Applause He has a couple more days to take besides that + the holidays.

Ok, how bad is this. I was typing the word couple in that last sentence. I looked back and it said coupon.

Am I being unreasonable?

My moms old Tracfone is more than 10 years old and it's a crappy phone. I bought her a new double minutes for life flip phone for Christmas.

I've spent more than 6 hours over 4 days trying to get this sob activated. Her days and minutes are transferred so, of course, the old phone no longer works. I had to bring it home with me to finish dealing with it and I will have to mail it back to her.

The last customer service person (very nice) decided the phone is bad and had another phone sent out to me. So, now I get to start this whole freaking process over again. But, anyway. The phone came yesterday. It's a reconditioned phone. I am not happy. I didn't buy a reconditioned phone. I bought a new phone.

Ok, so yeah, the phone looks fine, the warranty is the same, blah blah blah. It does seem kind of stupid that I care. And it's here, so I could get it working and sent back to her. But it still makes me mad and I am considering calling and demanding (nicely, of course) that they send me a NEW phone. I didn't buy a reconditioned phone. I bought a NEW one.

On the other hand, calling getting it activated, getting it mailed to Mom and out of hair definitely hold some appeal.

Well yes, I suppose that didn't make a whole lot of sense! And then I go to bed with no explanation. We don't do much for processed meat (IE; chicken nuggets) because I watched too much of that Jamie Oliver show when it was on like a year ago? And he does this thing where he shows how they make them.....here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9B7im8aQjo

And I haven't bought another bag/box since laugh out loud He might not have convinced those kids but he convinced me!

But I do NOT like touching/looking at/smelling the scent of raw meat at all. Sometimes I will have dh put it in the crockpot for me then I'll do the rest - usually while holding my breath or plugging my nose so I can't smell it Rofl2 I dunno what it is but I'm just not fond of it. The Wife Swap episode where there was a family that ATE raw meat and eggs ---- now that just made me want to vomit And I think they were from Iowa, go figure Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

I was concerned about learning to cook with the pans.....these are awesome though and I rarely have any problem with stuff sticking. Sure beats the Teflon peeling off of my old ones! Glad somebody else has tried the recipe! Can't wait to try it today.

Its probably not quite as bad, but I've heard the wait is still around an hour or so. It just so happened we were there on a weekend, close to Christmas, and they have lots of special Christmas goodies, so I'm sure that's partly what caused some of the rush.

I would love to go to Carlos bakery.. Love cake boss!! That show is awesome! My son thought it was totally cool that you went there!
They are truly yummy! And one apple is enough for two people to share. But that is a bummer that the shipping is so high...

I love the show, too - how its this enormous Italian family, huge burly men, making these fabulous and intricate, feminine cakes! And ya gotta love it when the mama starts screeching at everyone. laugh out loud

What's a pressure cooker
A pressure cooker is a sealed pan that cooks food under pressure. The short explanation is that it raises the boiling point and cooks food hotter and faster while sealing in all the liquid. This is actually pretty good, quick explanation. [missvickie.com]

There are things that I just won't cook any other way. Roast for one. I usually have to get under it with a spatula to get it out. If I stick a fork in it to pick it up, it falls apart. Any meat -- even the toughest, cheapest meat you can find -- will come out fork tender. I have never done beans, lentils, etc. but I understand they work great for that too. Oh, potatoes just take a few minutes, 10 or so.

This would also solve your raw meat smelling problem. Since the pan is sealed you cannot smell it cooking until it's pretty much done and smells like dinner.

The chicken you are doing would be perfect -- pressure cook it and it is so tender that it falls apart and shreds beautifully. If you are doing a whole chicken -- I would guestimate it would take maybe half an hour to be fall apart tender. If you are doing boneless breasts -- less time. Then, you have all that lovely broth to save to for chicken and noodles.

The down side is that have to learn to use them. It isn't difficult -- it just scares some people. No, they aren't going to explode and destroy your house. These newer one have more safety pressure release ways then the older ones. Worse case is you let the pressure get too high for too long and the seals pops to release the pressure (as intended). It will then spew liquid all over your stove and surrounding area. Or you husband wanders in and removes the lid without letting the pressure drop while you are running across the room screaming, "no, no, no"....laugh out loud (yes, it happened, it was my old one and HE had to clean the ceiling) You have to drop the pressure before opening it. You pull it off the heat and open the steam valve and wait for it to stop hissing. The newer ones have a safety thingy that won't let you release the lid until the pressure drops.

But, you do have to keep the pressure at the right level -- you figure it out the first time or two you use it. You just have to pay attention after that you pretty much know what setting is right on your stove.

I really prefer my old one over the newer one except that it was aluminum (with a warped bottom) and my new one is stainless (which I love and won't use aluminum). It's just the difference in the pressure gauge and I prefer the old kind.

This is the one I currently have:
