My oldest DD has recently discovered the "steam punk" look and has now decided that is her mission - to be steam punk and talk her parents into letting her attend a steam punk convention. *sigh*

Quote from ArielA :
My brother made me play once, but it was just ok to me. It seems like it takes a lot of time commitment, but I could be wrong. Kinda like the 2.5 hours I spent playing WoW (they all play WoW here too), I liked it, but had/have way more things to do then to be able to commit that much time to it.

J said he has done draft, and then explained it to me, but I only sorta got it. I am a total newb when it comes to magic or WoW laugh out loud
The hardest/longest part is just learning turn order and what the card abilities do and when (and when to use them). Sometimes the games themselves can go long, but usually they average your general board game time commitment.

Drafting is fun too, but kind of stressful if you don't know the game or cards very well.

I'm not as gung-ho as DH and his buddies are, but I enjoy it. Plus, it gives me something else I can do with him - and I'd usually rather be around him than wandering off by myself anyways. *laugh*

I've never played WoW. I'm afraid I'd like it too much. My biggest online game is Lord of the Rings - but I'm kind of in break mode right now. DH and I will play every night for a couple months, but then take a break for a bit. That's another big time sucker if you let it.

That's the problem with some of these things for me. I'm highly competitive, so it frustrates me when I'm not at a higher level or further along - but I just can't spend that much time at it. I already spend too much time "couponing". laugh out loud

There was nothing of great interest when I looked at the ad. I *might* go do the general mills thing or pick up some of the green giant veggies - but only because I have some cats to use up and hoping for overage on the gas-x/sinex with mq+eq combo. Otherwise, kind of a blah week again.

Now, I don't know who asked about Publix.. I have studied the deals there this week over and over and can't seem to get a definite plan together.. But, there is free popcorn.. which I am hoping to atleast be able to get RC for since I just ordered 20 coupons.. but my store is stingy with RC.. There is a good deal on the jimmy dean dlights sandwiches, progresso, tyson chicken, welchs juice, and glad trash bags. I just hope to find things in stock Wink
I hate that stores don't double down here Frown I'm too cheap to even pay $0.50 for popcorn laugh out loud

If your store will take a RC from an out of state Publix, I'll pick some up for you

Em's oncologist called her. It's NOT cancer. He is sending her to an orthopedic surgeon. It is Fibrous Dysplasia [bonetumor.org]. Non cancerous, but can be eat away her bone. Basically, the tumor spreads and weakens the bone, so not sure of treatment yet. We'll find out when she sees the surgeon. Hopefully she won't need a hip replacement, but if that's the worse of it, I'll take it. It also said that symptoms are worse during pregnancy which explains why her hip hurt so bad the whole 9 months.

Gosh, they did this so freakin fast, I'm just glad he took the time to call her on the weekend to let her know what it was. Now, i'm off to read up on this thing.
teri, i'm so happy for you! hug

Okay, I know we talked before about sharing other store deals..

Someone feel free to share any great deals going on anywhere else.. sometimes, for me, trying to read every different thread here on SD is so time consuming.
pretty much every wk i put together an online grocery list for shoprite and email it to bff and another friend. i also cut and paste all the coupon matchups from the shoprite thread and email that too. if anybody else here does shoprite i can include them. the deals w/ be a little ymmv b/c my shoprite doubles up to 4 like coupons up to .99. i know different owners have different rules like here at sil's, they only double 3 mq's up to .50 i think.

went to target w/ sil, her 2 friends and mil. saw one of her friends checking the prices of some boys clothing, inc a shawn white l/s tee for 6.98 so i gave her some coupons. not sure but think she ended up getting 2 shirts. gave other friend a pepperidge farm cookie q. now they probably think i'm a weirdo. i've been going thru sil's 2 pantries all wknd. don't know how much they know about sil's spending habits but gonna end up taking home and throwing out at least a 33gal garbage bag of expired food mostly from bjs so her dh doesn't find out how much money she wasted. dh just had to bring the little car and we have to drive mil home. and take her shopping on the way. hopefully somebody else will take the garbage or it's gonna be an interesting ride home.

We've got a little neighbor girl who recently turned 5. They moved here about 5 months ago from India and they've asked me to help teach her english. She's been coming over every day for about 2 hours or so. I'm just not sure how well I'm doing or what to expect. I think she's progressed pretty well, but then there are times I'm not sure. I'm also not sure what's a better approach - more of a traditional schooling type model, or playing with the kids and getting them to interact. Just wondering if there's any good suggestions that may help.
I work with bigger kiddos obviously, but I would say keep doing what you are doing ~ a little of both. They learn best with their peers on the social aspect and that comes quicker (about 2-3 years) and then learning academically is longer (about 5-7 years) for fluency. Concentrate on the positives, play games, repetition, sing songs, dance, walk around and name things and discuss them, draw pictures, make flashcards for everyday words, practice responses to everyday questions, read repetitive stories (first one that I love that comes to mind is NO DAVID), get her on the internet for games that have to deal with language and basic math for little ones (most of mine the school bought, but there's lots of free ones that I'm sure you have had your little ones play).

Unfortunately for my kiddos, they learn the language so quickly from their peers and can carry on convos in the halls and such that I mostly battle teachers who say why can't they do my work if they can chat with their friends, blah blah blah. They get angry and don't listen when I tell them that their mathematical terms are extremely hard and that it's much easier to carry on a convo about day to day than it is to explain the pythagorean theorem. laugh out loud How that isn't common sense is beyond me!

I'm sure you are doing a great job...just include her and ask her questions, lots of questions, encourage her to speak up. ESL kiddos get left out in the real world of school when they are so quiet.

They are tested each year on listening, speaking, reading and writing for ESL along with any state tests that are required as long as they are coded an ESL student. Therefore it is imperative that they speak up and join convos in the classroom so that the teachers can grade them annually. Once they achieve marks of Advanced High on each of those areas (generally 4 years in school years, excluding K) and are fluent on another test (I use Woodcock Munoz) which tests their vocabulary in English (shows basic pics like highchair, broom, welcome mat to harder pics of Africa, Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc) to see if they know the English language) then they are exited from ESL and no longer receive any services.

Expose her to off the wall things, too, like if you live in a city show farm animals, barns, hay, etc. or show city life, paintings, skyscrapers, taxis, etc or coastal lighthouses, cranes, etc. And be accurate, if they say baby chair instead of high chair it is counted wrong, instead of broom they say sweeper, it is wrong even if we know they know what they are talking about. It makes a huge difference on their score.

I think I went on and on and not sure what direction you needed so I strayed. Probably more info in some areas than you needed and not enough in one you did. Let me know what else I can help with!

That is great.. Wish I had a shoprite here!

Sad that your SIL bought that much stuff that will be wasted Frown I can't stand when I find expired stuff in the pantry.. atleast when it is something I got for free I feel a *little* better!

Went to Menards. We now have a new water heater (currently heating water) and 12 Jack's Pizzas. They had a special - 6 for $10. Always handy to pick up a few groceries with your building materials. Gotta love a list that includes copper pipe and pizza.

Made a quick Target stop and got 6 boxes of the hot chicken breast piece thingys with the $3/2 coupon. Picked up some decaf tea bags and sour cream, no deal, we were just out of both. Didn't spend any time looking around, we needed to get home and the water heater in.

Teri, so glad to hear your daughter's news was much better than expected.

That is exactly the problem. I know that I would devote too much time to it all if I got too involved, so I stay away. The one time I played WoW, it was just supposed to be to try it out. 2.5 hours later I finally pulled myself away from the computer and haven't let myself try it again laugh out loud

laugh out loud Sorry that was a sarcastic remark bc at Thanksgiving dinner my MIL stated to everyone that there is new research coming out that says it has something to do with the womans pH levels... This was the day we found out we weren't having a boy and J was a little disappointed. Needless to say, I don't always like my MIL.....

I will try to give the heads up on good CVS deals, like the pepsi deal.. And for those who didn't make it out today before the 4.00 coupon expired.. Hold out a few days, they may release more on Thursday Wink That is what I am hoping for.
Thank you SO much for the CVS soda deal. I was able to get a ton of soda for DH's office. Now I have a $10 ECB (is that what they are called?) to use up on another deal. I'm so new to the drugstore circuit, I can use all the help I can get.

Market Pantry Chicken Breast Bites -- Buffalo Style 10 oz. $2.99 - $3/2 Target Coupon. They are in the bunker in the freezer section with appetizers and stuff. Not in the middle bunkers by meat with the bigger bags of chicken stuff.

Not a super deal, but it's half price and hubby likes them. He loves hot wings, but it seems like so many of them have gotten so greasy. Tried these boneless pieces, they aren't greasy and he loves them.

Actually, that's very helpful - thank you.

She knows some English already, so that helps a little bit. It's an interesting process though. There are times I know she just doesn't quite understand what I am saying or asking of her, and it helps that my toddler is there because she can model the request or respond and then this little girl can copy it - and then we repeat that activity or whatever it is often. It seems to be working because she's now doing things like asking for snacks, to use the bathroom, to read books or play certain things, and she's even grasped some manners like "may I xyz", "I'm sorry/I forgive you", "thank you/you're welcome", etc... And she didn't have that before.

Then there are times I just see an ornery and obstinate look in her eyes (like my little one gives) where she just doesn't want to do something - and that is frustrating on my end because I never know how far to push without crossing some kind of boundary - KWIM?

Interesting what you say about making her say the proper words for things. My DD has a doctor kit and she calls the needle a "vaccination" (surprises me on some of the "big" words that she knows vs. the "smaller" ones that she doesn't know). She doesn't/won't say "shot" or "needle" when they play. It's either "vaccination" or "blood". It's hard to get her to say phrases too, so I try to just repeat a lot of them and talk like I would to my kids when they are learning English - i.e. "Oh, do you want to take my blood?" Etc...
