Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

id plug the big appliance in first (before starting the generator)

then turn on other stuff (after said big appliance is running)

be careful not to overload your genny (most have a circuit breaker built in but dont get crazy)

Question... what about the refrigerator? That can't be turned off, so would I plug it in after?
the refrigerator consumes alot of juice and cycles on and off according to the inside temperature. There is no on and off switch but there is a thermostat that could be turned down, best thing to do is unplug it before plugging back in. If you have too much of an amperage draw the circuit breaker on the generator will trip. Then you have to make choices on what to keep plugged in. The fridge causes a big electrical surge when it turns on and off and all electrical codes want fridge on separate dedicated electrical circuit. When my power was out for 2 days I made choices, I put some of the food in coolers in the garage and the frozen stuff had to be sacrificed because I had electric heating source for house (no gas or oil, heat pump only) and I only had enough amperage on my generator to power space heater (draws a lot of amps, but no other heat source so I had little choice) on low, some fluorescent lamps and tv. We have a woodstove, so heat won't be a major issue. One of our biggest problems is that we have a well and the pump is hard wired into the circuit breaker box, so we lose our water..... and the ability to flush the toiletEmbarrassment So we have buckets of water to pour into the toilet tank. I think my biggest concern right now.... I don't want to miss the Super Bowl!!! Frown

Dang it just called WalMart for the specs and the t.v. is sold out and not getting anymore in and they don't have it on line. Oh well you snooze you lose.

After Hurricane Rita we had no problem with running the frig and the freezer on our 5000 watt generator. We had to plug one in and wait 30 minutes before plugging the other in. After that they both stayed plugged in continuously. Even with a couple of lights and computer, the gen had no problem keeping up. At night, we unplugged both in order to run our small room ac. This went on for almost a month and we lost no food. Had to travel 70 miles for fuel though. For the first two weeks I had to go myself for the fuel as they would not allow anyone into town unless you were "needed" in the area. I own a towing company so I could come and go at will even after the dusk to dawn curfew.

There is a way to power a well with a generator. I'm not sure on exactly how, but I've done work at houses that are under construction and other trades will be running the well off a generator. I know it is hooked up with what looks like an extension cord cut in half and it gets connected at the pressure switch where the wires would hook to the well from the breaker box. I know you should also disconnect the wires to the house when you connect the wires to the generator.

I hate to say this, but I've done that with my cat. Unfortunately, it was in the horse's field and he didn't like any other critters in his area - nearly stomped her to death. Cat was just fine but I felt absolutely awful (as well I should). Will never, ever do anything like that again. Must've been the devil in me that showed his evil self!

Alaunts are in the mastiff family. Such big babys and very much like raising a child. My dog was smarter than the neighbors kids!!! LMAOLMAO
Brandy was potty trained within a week and learned to sit at 3 months old. She used to race the mail lady and one day she wanted on the other side so she sped up and crossed in front of the mail jeep. Tore up the underside of the car but Brandy was just shook up a bit!! Glad she wasnt hurt but we had to keep her in the house between noon and 1!!
