Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

This would make the original thread more useful to those seeking serious information and clues without having to read through hundreds of extraneous messages.

So, I hope it catches on !

So pop a beer and pull up a chair and relax !

OMG Just got this email from my electric company. This is not good news...

"PSE&G is advising customers to be prepared for possible wide-spread and lengthy power outages as a result of the major winter storm that is currently hitting its service territory. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings throughout New Jersey until Wednesday evening. Significant snow and ice accumulations are possible in some areas.

While PSE&G has extra personnel and supplies on hand for electric and gas storm-related emergencies, the utility believes there is the potential for wide-spread and lengthy power outages.

"If weather forecasts are correct, we could experience significant damage to our power lines due to icing and tree issues," said PSE&G President and COO Ralph LaRossa......"

Lengthy power outages? I sure don't like the sound of that! How am I going to get my daily SD fix? EEK!

We have a woodstove, so heat won't be a major issue. One of our biggest problems is that we have a well and the pump is hard wired into the circuit breaker box, so we lose our water..... and the ability to flush the toiletEmbarrassment So we have buckets of water to pour into the toilet tank. I think my biggest concern right now.... I don't want to miss the Super Bowl!!! Frown
Thank you for not spelling it "Super Bowel" like we saw in some post last week LMAO

There is a way to power a well with a generator. I'm not sure on exactly how, but I've done work at houses that are under construction and other trades will be running the well off a generator. I know it is hooked up with what looks like an extension cord cut in half and it gets connected at the pressure switch where the wires would hook to the well from the breaker box. I know you should also disconnect the wires to the house when you connect the wires to the generator.
Good luck! Hopefully you won't need any of this info!
Wow! That sounds way too complicated for me. The disconnecting the house wires sounds familiar. I spoke to an electrician about getting an emergency connection for the well last spring (but unfortunately did not have the $$ to follow throughHead Bang ) and he said something about the dangerous situation created when people connect the generator to the circuit breaker.... when the power comes back on, the guys working on the power lines get zappedEEK! I think the best thing to do is try to save up enough money to get the electrician to do the work properly.

I have a hot tub so we had plenty of water available to pour into toilet,( I also have well) Hopefully you will not lose power, but you are very wise worship to be prepared because it definitely can happen. We always keep gas and about 20 gallons of drinking water every winter in case of power outage. With four dogs a hotel is not an option.
As for the well it can be done but I would only recommend doing that if you are a licensed electrician or have a friend who is.

Using it outdoors is about the only think I'm 100% sure about Wink Great point about the flourescent bulbs.. I have a few of the ones that take the place of lightbulbs.
Question... what about the refrigerator? That can't be turned off, so would I plug it in after?
Quote from towpros :
After Hurricane Rita we had no problem with running the frig and the freezer on our 5000 watt generator. We had to plug one in and wait 30 minutes before plugging the other in. After that they both stayed plugged in continuously. Even with a couple of lights and computer, the gen had no problem keeping up. At night, we unplugged both in order to run our small room ac. This went on for almost a month and we lost no food. Had to travel 70 miles for fuel though. For the first two weeks I had to go myself for the fuel as they would not allow anyone into town unless you were "needed" in the area. I own a towing company so I could come and go at will even after the dusk to dawn curfew.

Thanks! Great advice for connecting the refrigerator and freezer. And I won't need to worry about running the air conditioner Wink
I'm so glad you decided to get your generator questions answered tonight, instead of waiting for a potential power outage.
Looks like you've been getting lots of good, practical advice from the good Funny Farm Folks.
Sure hope you won't need to use the generator, but nice to know you're informed and prepared if you do. Take care & stay warm!!

Rocky: You can also put a plastic bag in the toilet - secured under the toilet seat. Or, just use the outdoors Smilie

Those oil lamps work well, as well as those battery operated lamps - using less energy from lighting off the generator.

On the subject of power outages for those in the affected areas. Cell phone service will go out most likely and if you have hard wired phone service with cordless phones the cordless phones will also go out. We keep around the old fashioned corded phone and it will still work if you have hard wired phone service. (Yes, I was a boy scout, so I learned to always be prepared )laugh out loud
