Macy's is running a background check on my 6 year old child, is that legal?

So this past christmas my 6 year old was hurt at macy's when a display shelf came crashing down.

Today is the 1st time they contacted me.

The wanted to know about a car accident we had 3 months ago.

How the hell do they know my 6 year old was in a car accident unless they ran a background check.

Any ideas?

And no trolls, I'm not looking for legal advice, I'm looking for the database that Macy's used to check on my child.

Not considering famous ppl's medical records, can you tell me of any instance since HIPAA was enacted a few years ago where a patient's medical record was given to a PI or business corporation through illegal means?

There has to be a gain for the HIPAA violator to risk fines and jail time--i.e. the office employee must have some financial gain for breaking the law. Thus, if it's not a famous person and a newspaper (for example) willing to give that employee a lot of money for the records, it's really not worth it for anyone to violate HIPAA laws.

That said, I can certainly be wrong. I'm just going by the assumption that my fellow colleagues abide by HIPAA and are afraid of getting sued, fined, and jailed. If you can prove me wrong, then I'd be the first to admit it. However, just flapping your gums is just conjecture. Back it up. I honestly don't mind being wrong. I truly want to know to increase my understanding of HIPAA.
