Anyone with a rental property:

Did your house have to get inspected and approved by the City? Did you have to have a code compliance inspection?

We had to pay our property manager $610 for him to get a license through the city to rent the house. Then we had the code inspection. We just got the report today and they are claiming that another $750 in plumbing improvements need to be made, including eliminating a 1/2 Bath. I could cry. I have no way of knowing being so far away what they are doing in MY house. Does this sound normal, or do you have less restrictions if you are the one renting the property, as opposed to a mgmt. company doing it?
I would think the licensing is OK, as my Grandma's house has to have that done and inspected every so often. Why in the world would you need to eliminate a half bath? That would just decrease the value of the property and the amount of rent you could charge. I would be tempted to padlock the door closed instead!

good afternoon! where is everybody today? still recuperating from superbowl partying?

EEK! isn't the pot ceramic? how'd it come off?

my store is usually slow to mark down and reset except for scheduled holiday markdowns, dollar spot etc. i think it was friday or saturday they reset the camping and fishing aisle and threw whatever was left w/ the dregs of the 75% sport toys. so unless your store is really late w/ resets, there is probably not much left.

i did find a very nice fieldcrest luxury queen-sized white blanket 060-07-0599 for 75% off at 14.98 on saturday. kinda wish i could have found it in the green that i saw in king-sized at another store, but that was too big. at my stores all the good bedding was 2-3 wks ago and just finding stuff here and there last wk. i missed all the corelle the last 2 wks. everybody kept talking about the flower pattern so i didn't realize my pattern was also 75% off and i missed it.

i'm ready to take a break from target. almost every wk i've been chasing 75% off clearance since new yrs eve. the piles are really getting on my nerves. as well as the filthy house. now in the midst of who is getting what, what is staying and what is getting returned.
Yes, crock pot was ceramic. I don't now why the finish came off. I felt the roughness when washing it. There were two spots. One on each side of the insert inside. I thought something was stuck to it and used a plastic scrubby to scrub spots. Finally took a closer look when I saw black specks on my scrubby.

Been there, done that... so far, I'm still alive. Teehee

It was a splat day for me.

Prepping to go to the funeral. Went shopping to get a couple things for DD and myself. I brought home 6 tshirts, 1 pair of pants, 1 belt, & 3 pr socks for DH. Got a pair of nylons and a nursing bra for myself. Ugh. I could not find anything that I really liked. There were 2 dresses that were nice-ish, but I couldn't find any cami's to go under them that wouldn't look utterly dorky. *sigh* I hate this stage - the "nothing fits correctly" stage. Frown Frown Frown Sure takes the wind out of your sails for shopping.

Took a turn at T. Had a couple odd beepers and I think it was right/left barcode thing. Thought I picked a jedi, but dude took all my free q's and waited til the end to scan - so nothing attached right and they all said "INF". *sigh* Thankfully, it ended up only about $20 off (yeah, I know, that's a lot more than "only"). But, I guess it could've been worse. We did get a few things for the trip and MIL's house - so I spent more than I typically would at T.

I am trying not to complain too much. I usually get a good deal as it is, and with being sick I just haven't had any time to really do shopping like I would prefer. So it's okay. Plus, I have very awesome stores that let me use expireds - so I *do* get deals where others would not!

Slimfast bars were 3.79 for the peanutbutter ones. I don't know if there are current mq's, but not too shabby if all you have is the $1.50 tq.

Not sure if it's old news or not, but a lot of the big save stuff was marked down. Life cereal was 3.xx, Oreos were 3.xx, palmolive 4.xx (hoping that goes lower soon), etc... I think it was all at 15%. Some of the big box diapers were marked down to $30ish, some other cleaning and foodstuffs... Didn't write it down (sorry).

Oh my... I *just* had this awful room-spinning thing!!! Ugh. I think my ears are messed up. (now I regret cancelling my appointment. please don't hurt me gg/gt/bunnies/ss/tn/andtherestofya'll...)

Mavis is such a doll. She's just the happiest baby - even when she's cranky. She's getting another tooth already! *sigh* It's so sweet. I broke down and bought a pack of luvs - which are 6.99/package btw. I figured it'd be good for the trip.

It's the 2nd set... lol. Bought some for travel during Christmas! But yeah - I've done pretty good at sticking to the cloth dipes. I just decided last minute that I didn't want to mess with it at my MILs.

Does anyone know when the TPC on the Quantum will end? I forgot to check the date. Frown

Wow, this thread is quiet today!

Ank, you and I are in the same boat! We leave on Thursday for the service, so I'm scrambling to get everything together by then. My girls didn't really have anything appropriate for the service, so I've been looking for dresses for them. Found one at Burlington Coat Factory, still looking for my youngest. Found a dress for me at Dress Barn - I used to hate shopping there, but they seem to have revamped their image and I found quite a few things I liked there. The dress I ended up buying (which isn't on their website for some reason, or else I'd link it) just fits like a dream and I LOVE it.

Anyway, that's what I've spent my day doing. And somehow, in the next 2.5 days, I must assemble 50 Valentines cards for my kiddos; clean my house; pack for the family; make baked goods to bring to MI for all the family coming; and find one more dress.

With that said, I am off to bed, so I can get an early start tomorrow.

'Night, all!!!

This sounds like 100% more effort than I usually put forth but am willing to try it if it turns out good. How much broth are we talking?
It really isn't hard at all and it's not as time consuming as it sounds. The first time will probably take you a while but once you get the hang of it, it's actually really quick. Other than cooking the meat, if you want to use it, it doesn't usually take me anymore than 15 or 20 minutes. Do you make pie crust? If you can roll and move a pie crust, noodles are a slam dunk

I used 14 eggs the other day and I had some broth from the beef, maybe a quart. Then I used 2 or 3 boxes (32 oz). So, around a gallon for that many noodles. I have a slow cooker that is the size of one of those electric roasters, it was plumb full. I would say if you are going to make a big batch with a dozen eggs and use all store broth, I'd buy 4 and start with 3. You can use bouillon cubes to make your brother but I don't care for the flavor of those. (HyVee has theirs for either $1.45 or $1.65 and it's good)

I went. Nothing too exciting. Got a little meat and few things we needed. No fishing clearance at Target for me. Hubby uses Western Dressing and that was a pretty good deal. They are on TPC for $1.60 - $0.75 TQ - $1/2 MQ = $0.35 each wyb 2. Wish I would have had more than 4 TQ with me. I can't remember when the TPC ends (I wrote it down, but it's in the car) but I know it goes for another couple weeks.

Ok speaking of expirations....how far can medicine actually go past the date? I have probably a dozen Robitussin in the closet that I never used during the big Wags?? deal back in 09. I opened one the other day to take a swig when my throat was hurting and looked at the date...exp 10/09. Most expired in 2010.

So how far is too far??

gatorcater - yep, unfortunately that's becoming very lucrative for a lot of cities to charge for rental licenses. Up until recently ours was about $100. give or take and now it's going up to around a $1000. EEK! and they do look at everything including garage door openers (so make sure you put new batteries in the remote!) On your 1/2 bath probably only one tiny thing didn't meet code, which your right, doesn't make sense - it devalues the property. BUT... you can reap that back at the county assessors. Tell them you no longer have that extra bath and your property taxes should go down.

rachael_9667 - Hope your little one's doing better and yes, your mom and I could have been great friends... sharing our miseries.hughug

gt6mk31 - I used to make those noodles all the time when the kiddos were little; the only difference was that I hung them on my clothes drying rack over the register vent to dry for about an hour. I don't know why other than my Grandmother said (with authority) I had to. There were two little old maids that lived down the road from us who were in their late 80's to early 90's that still milked their own cows and raised chickens. Every Sunday they would bring eggs and milk to church to sell them. A quarter a quart or a quarter a dozen... your choice or mix and match, providing you returned the glass milk jars and cardboard egg crates. They both died a few years back, one was 103 and the other was 105.

Callie - I have no idea about the meds, but I ran accross a web article (from harvard it says [harvard.edu]) that states:

Quote :
Most of what is known about drug expiration dates comes from a study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing its drugs every few years. What they found from the study is 90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date.

So the expiration date doesn't really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective or has become unsafe to use. Medical authorities state expired drugs are safe to take, even those that expired years ago. A rare exception to this may be tetracycline, but the report on this is controversial among researchers. It's true the effectiveness of a drug may decrease over time, but much of the original potency still remains even a decade after the expiration date. Excluding nitroglycerin, insulin, and liquid antibiotics, most medications are as long-lasting as the ones tested by the military. Placing a medication in a cool place, such as a refrigerator, will help a drug remain potent for many years.
Hope that helps you decide.

I would personally take it, but I like to live on the edge a little. Big Grin (remember who you're talking to when you make your decision... Teehee )

GT - I love that TPC on the dressing. I am hoping to get my hands on more q's and grab some dressing. Stuff is expensive when you are going through a bottle a week or more! We are huge salad eaters in the summer, and I use italian as a marinade quite a bit.

Flugette - you will be on my mind as you travel! Lots of prayers for safety.

Muffies - 103/105. Faint I can't even imagine!!

my brother studied to be a pharmacist and he told me that every yr the efficacy of meds goes down about 10%. so a yr or maybe 2 would still be effective but after 5+ yrs it's not potent enough anymore.

i will say from personal experience, i believe vitamins lose their potency soon after the expiration date, so just like yoghurt, i push myself to keep taking them b4 they expire.

my bff's husband is an independent pharmacist and she told me that some very expensive drugs like heart meds lose their potency quickly and sometimes since they are supposed to work in conjunction w/ other drugs the patient is not getting the benefits of their meds.

obviously robitussin isn't one of those expensive drugs you need to worry about. b/c of what my bro told me, i routinely will use my otc meds up to a yr past the exp date. by that time i should have found a decent deal to replace it.

and after all, it's not like almost anything w/ an expiration date is like cinderella and will turn into a pumpkin at midnite. even milk doesn't go bad right away. it's just to give you some idea and a guideline and the store a sell by deadline.
