BBC World Service Radio is reporting it too. They spoke to someone nearby who said the roof and walls of one of the buildings have been blown away.

Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) right...cuz the authorities know what is in the best interest for public consumption, to keep it as calm as possible

come on, even in the u.s. after 9/11, authorities made claims of how the debris plumes/smoke were ok, and safe enough to not evacuate...of course, common sense would indicate otherwise. now folks have directly related health conditions

and they don't want another pr disaster like chernobyl

it sounds like they were unable to maintain the power plant and that the #1 core overheated and exploded… the reports of an actual meltdown are unconfirmed but they have confirmed that there was an explosion and they have evacuated a much larger area as a result…. 4 workers were injured in the explosion around 3:30 local time….

nuclear response teams are in route, they are saying if you are exposed cover your mouth with a wet cloth, avoid eating fresh produce and water, seek medical attention asap

the reports are now that there is a radiation leak at the power plant

1015 microcevert…. 1 hour exposure at that level is what you are normally exposed to during an entire year….

Jiji news agency said there had been an explosion at the

vapour rising from the plant, which lies 240 km (150 miles)

NHK television said the outer structure of the building that
houses the reactor appeared to have blown off, which could
suggest the containment building had already been breached.

Japan's nuclear agency said on Saturday that radioactive caesium and iodine had been detected near the number one reactor of the Fukushima 1 plant.
The agency said this may indicate that containers of uranium fuel inside the reactor may have begun melting.

this one is sketchy but does talk about the leak:

If this ends up in a complete meltdown of the core there is gonna be another big wave heading towards the west coast of the United States and it isn't going to be water. EEK!

This is going to set back any chance of nuclear power becoming available in the U.S. anytime soon and I'm not sure I disagree.

Cnn reporting 9500 people missing from Minamisanriku. Have a friends whose family is missing from the area. Family does not own transportation so she is thinking that none of them made it.

Video of the explosion. [youtube.com]

Quote :
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said there had been no major change in the level of radiation after the explosion because it did not occur inside the reactor container.

"The nuclear reaction facility is surrounded by a steel storage machine, which is then surrounded by a concrete building. This concrete building collapsed. We learnt that the storage machine inside did not explode," he told a news conference.

Edano initially said an evacuation radius of 10 km (6 miles) from the stricken 40-year-old Daiichi 1 reactor plant in Fukushima prefecture was adequate, but then an hour later the boundary was extended to 20 km (13 miles). TV footage showed vapor rising from the plant, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.
