How much emergency money do you keep?

8,038 649 March 25, 2011 at 07:56 PM in Question
Just wondering approximately how much cash people keep on hand in the event of an emergency…

not talking about the 20 behind your drivers liscense…

i am referring to the money burried in your sock drawer, under your mattress, in a box in the back yard etc..

they money you keep on hand for the earthquake, flood, riot, hurricane, etc…

I am refreshing my emergency supplies and just am not sure if I have enough cash on hand (yes I am making sure i have it in smaller bills so i can make change in the event others cant)

But I think you'd be better off with a 12 gauge shotgun like a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.
I agree.

I'd go with a Mossy 500... Or if you can convince your wife and have the funds, a Mossberg 930 [youtube.com]. Big Grin

that ruger 10-22 looks like something i'll be interested in. where does the 10-round magazine go? and, how much do those run?
Loads in the bottom. Looks like your standard 'assault weapon'.

They're generally $250-$400, depending on where you get it and what you get.

That's almost exactly what I was going to say.

Handguns are much smaller and will be more easily hidden. If the kids don't see/find it, they won't want to play with it. There are lots of different lockboxes and handgun vaults available, but remember, you also want something that is relatively easy to access in an emergency.

One suggestion, maybe a shotgun would be better than a rifle. Most defense situations occur up close and personal, a shotgun is better at close range. Rifles are better at distances.
Also, whatever choice you make, be sure to get some range time in for practice and don't just put it up and forget it until you need it, practice regularly. Professional training would also be a good idea.

A .22 for defense is a BAD idea. They are great guns for practice and learning how to use a gun, but you want something bigger for self defense. Don't get me wrong they're better than nothing, but not ideal. I see you're in Commiefornia, so you've got more restrictions than most. Cali legal AR-15s are a shame, perhaps a Ruger Mini-14 if they are legal, otherwise I'd stick with something simple like a Marlin 30-30 lever action in a rifle. But I think you'd be better off with a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun like a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.
I get what you're saying. But, if I wanted the option to go practice shooting every so often and even perhaps hunting, a .22 would be a good option, right?

Small game hunting, maybe.

A .22 won't take down a deer... And I'm pretty sure that may be illegal. I'm not up to date on hunting laws, though. Practicing... Shotgun ammo is cheap. It's when you start getting into .308, .223/5.56, 7.62, .30-06, that it gets pretty pricey to go shooting.

yeah, small game.....like wild boar which we have in the area or rabbits.

I was looking online at some websites that have fairly cheap .22 rifles for around $200, like the Mossberg, Savage Arms, or Marlin rifles. Are they any good?

Wild boar?!

I've heard bad stories about those. I'm afraid a .22 will just piss it off.

Mossy and Savage are okay. I have no experience with Marlins.

Have you seriously considered a shotgun?

Exactly what I was thinking.

As for practice, yes a .22 is going to be your cheapest option, but how much is your family's lives and safety worth?
If you're only planning on having one gun in the house and if your primary purpose for having it is self defense, go for something bigger. Honestly, 7.62X39 & .223 aren't a whole lot more than .22. 12 gauge shotguns shells aren't either.

I haven't shot one, but I've heard good things. Would be my top 2 choice behind Ruger 10/22.

As I said, I haven't had any experience with Marlins. When it comes down to brand preference, that's really something best decided by you. I'd go to a store that sells .22s and pick up a few and see how they feel. This is also after looking up your prospective weapons and making sure they won't blow up in your face. laugh out loud

Where are you getting your ammo?

I can get 500 .22LR rounds for less than $20. 100 .223 is $40. Shotgun shells are up there, but you're also not going to the range to shoot 100 rounds off, either.

I'm looking at shotguns now too since you guys mentioned it and they are roughly the same price. What gauge should I be looking for?

For example, I see a H&R one for about $200. Also, Maverick Arms.

Mavericks are the "budget" line of Mossberg. Think Compaq to HP. If you were gonna go for a cheaper shotgun, I couldn't recommend Maverick enough.

12 gauge. You're not gonna get a rifled barrel in a cheaper shotgun, so you'll want something like low-recoil 00 buckshot.

can you recommend anything that's decent and not too expensive. cuz, now that i'm thinking about it, a shotgun probably is better as you guys mentioned.

If it matters, Marlin is owned by Remington now, so you're not dealing with a no-name company.

That sounds about right. I didn't mean they were cheaper than .22, just that they would be the next cheapest calibers.

Like Eric said, a Mossberg 500, or Remington 870 are about the "standard" of the mainstream shotguns. A lot of police agencies use the 870, and I believe the military issues the 500s.

The Maverick 88 is the "budget" version of the Mossy 500. I've seen a "budget" version of the 870 around here on SD... but I can't remember the brand. It's not affiliated with Remington like Maverick is with Mossberg, though.

much difference between a 12 gauge and a 20 gauge. it appears that the 20 guage remington 870's are cheaper.

if i wanted to go really cheap, is the maverick 88 okay if i don't plan to really ever use it?
